Paris - Roubaix | The Preview
Welcome to the Hell of the North, and no we're not talking about some reference to Game of Thrones. Riders, Teams and Fans from across the globe flock annually to the city of love and romance to prepare themselves for 254km of the toughest and most brutal racing of the year.
A race that tends to be full of drama, whether that be crashes into spectators, late punctures or slipping and sliding over thousand year old stones. One thing is for sure, you don't want to miss this one.
This year we have 23 Teams on the start line in Saint-Quentin, to the North of Paris. 22 of these from the Pro Tour and 1 team from the PCT bravely sending riders to battle against the best in the world on such terrain.
A race heavily dominated by one man is surely not too common an occurrence. Especially when that one man is a New Zealander who has won this race 7 times in the past 10 years including a 6 year run between 2013 and 2018. Many others have joined him on the podium over the years with notable inclusions being the now retired Tom Boonen and the still active Danny Summerhill as well as Joeri Stallaert in more recent years.
| Winner | 2nd | 3rd | 2021 | Bewley | Theuns | Per | 2020 | Blythe | Bewley | Stallaert | 2019 | Wisniowski | Summerhill | Teunissen | 2018 | Bewley | Stallaert | Kristoff | 2017 | Bewley | Senechal | Van Avermaet | 2016 | Bewley | Van Avermaet | Senechal | 2015 | Bewley | Boonen | Kluge | 2014 | Bewley | Cancellara | Boonen | 2013 | Bewley | Boonen | Summerhill | 2012 | Boonen | Bewley | Burghardt |
For the first time in 10 years, we won't have Sam Bewley in the Top 5 when we finish in Roubaix. The reason for this being that he isn't even on the start line this year! This will mean it's someone else's year.
We do have a former winner here and that's Lukasz Wisniowski. He will be hoping to repeat his effort from 2019 and he should have a very good chance given his strength across all terrains. He does only have 1 real support rider in Anderberg but the Swede is no slouch.
His main competitors? Well it depends how the race is ridden. If we have a small group of riders fighting it out on the track ring then it's hard to look past the likes of Mads Pedersen and Edward Theuns who will be dreaming of going 1 better than his 2nd place in 2021.
Another man who isn't quite as strong but still very capable is David Per who was, of course, also on the podium last year.
Those who will look to animate the race should include Danny Summerhill. He's not had the same success here as he has across most of the northern classics but better late than never!
It's worth keeping an eye on Przemyslaw Kasperkiewicz as well. He'll be at the back in a sprint but his aggression will surely light up the stones of France.
Interestingly, there is also a duo riding for the same team that we will need to pay attention to. Tinkoff's Arman Kamyshev and Florian Senechal are a dangerous duo and could benefit from strength in numbers as this race nears its conclusion.
There are far too many riders to be able to cover all of them but additional stand-outs include Spengler, Gerts, Zepuntke and Altur.

Can Mads do the triple? We certainly hope so, but it will of course be hard. Fingers crossed for another good day and that we try to animate the race, as we did so brilliantly in RvV.

Probably can't expect as much from Debesay here. A top20 would already be a very good result.
Good luck everyone. Ir's always sepcial to read a Paris-Robewley report. Betting on Gerts for the win. Pedersen could be the main favourite though.
Thanks for the preview LLS!

Should be an exciting race, but it's a real shame Bewley didn't get a wildcard here.

Biggest race there is for us this season!
Definitely the moment for Wisniowski to make us forget everything about his classics campaign so far, as a win would be massive. It has to be the goal as well, as he starts the race as the favourite. Though, seeing how the last few editions have played out, I'm suspecting we could see some kind of sprint for the win, with a smaller group involved. |

I would have preferred to be excited about a monument like the
Is, but seeing our cobblers non-perform isn’t much of a joy :-)

In theory this should one of the best cobbled races for Zepuntke, but theory and reality don't neccesarily have to be the same thing. Top-10 must be the goal though. Thanks for the nice preview, LLS. Good luck toa ll!

Not the key race for us anymore that it once was but i want to see Polanc / Neilands play a bigger role than in the past few races. At the front, all eyes are on Pedersen...
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Summerhill should do well here, maybe a podium is out of reach buy I certainly want him to animate the race a little.

OMG?! Is that possible.
I really hoped on better result compare to E3 and RVV but I didn't even think about that 3rd place would be possible.
Congrats to Croatia for the win.
Thanks for report.

Summerhill was there and present just like I wanted, although he never really was in a position/ability to attack it seems. Even so 5th rounds off a decent but not spectacular classics season but he's gathered a decent haul of points despite not getting a marquee win.
Congrats to Per and Croatia for the win, training does pay off it seems

Well this was unexpected. Debesay's best result comes in the race which least suits him. It's a superb result for us, though. One we will cherish for years to come. It feels incredibly random though, especially with riders like Gerts and Wisniowski underperforming.
Wonderful triumph for Isostar. There's simply no match for Croatia! Kudos, mate!
Loved the report as well, LLS, thansk again!

What a great race! Congrats to Croatia, Gustav, and especially Tinxia on the podium. And a big thanks to the three of you for dragging Spengler to the finish line
Very happy with 4th here, it looks to be Spenglers first heavy hitting result, though my fear is Paris Roubaix and other similarly flat classics are the only races he will be competitive in.
Thanks for the race LLS!
