The cobblestone classics usually take place in the spring, but we have a few later in the year as well. It's the 21st of August and it's time for the final one-day ProTour cobblestone classic, East Midlands Cicle Classic. The British race has been on the calendar uninterrupted since 2010, first two years at a lower level, but a main fixture on the highest level since 2012. The record holder is, unsurprisingly, Bewley with six victories, with his streak since 2012 only interrupted by Van Avermaet in 2017. Will he be beaten today?

The race starts in Empingham and finishes 203 kilometer later in Oakham. The route contains many cobblestone sectors, which are to be traversed multiple times. The final sector ends about ten kilometer before the finish line, giving riders a chance to return. Mr B went solo last year but most other recent editions have ended in a reduced sprint.

World Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski has two third places from the last two editions. Is it finally time for him to step up a place? Or will he be able to jump up two places immediately? It will be one of his last races in the rainbow jersey (for now?) so hopes to go out on a high note.

Number two of last year is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Summerhill. He's the antagonist of the cobblestone races this season given he's only here on a wildcard. His Ronde van Vlaanderen win took many points away from PT teams, who hope to have the better of the American here. Loyal lieutenant pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Vanspeybrouck will help him fight off the attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Spengler is good on the cobblestones, but not on anything else really. Probably not the right recipe to win unless he can create a large gap on his own on the final sector.

It is a surprise to see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Bewley not on the top of a favorite list, but that does not mean he won't stand any chance at winning. With age comes experience, which is valuable in these races, and he has the palmares to back it up. Never finishing outside the top three since 2012, you can't help wondering though that his dominance might come to an end soon.

A Roubaix winner is automatically a favorite here as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Blythe is someone to take into account, especially if we have a larger group towards the end. By now the others know the move which brought him the Roubaix win, so when he opens the sprint, others will follow immediately.

The other wildcard is for Podium Ambition and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Altur. Unlike the Andorrans they have not alienated the entire field which might play into their advantage. Last year he finished a decent eighth.

A strong block with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Senechal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev for Tinkoff. Double trouble or double "trouble"? They both have a historic best result of sixth, so neither can claim sole leadership based on that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Stallaert is a very good shout if it comes to a larger sprint, but definitely has the ability to win the race outright as well. It would be a fresh name at the top of a race, in a discipline often dominated by a select few.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen took his best ever result here last year, just outside the podium. Can he find his way onto it this time around? Or is this the best he got? We'll find out tomorrow!

What started as a month where we had big expectations, turned out quite disappointing so far. Instead of gaining ground on Isostar, they have build a bit of a lead and this might be one of the better options to gain back.

This is Blythes best remaining race so I'd like to see him deliver big. He finished the race in the top five in each of his last three participations so thats what i expect to see from him again.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

This should be a good race for us. Mostly flat, so both Pedersen and Wisniowski should really do good here. We go in hoping for a win and we more or less have to be on the podium for us to be happy with the race. I hope we set up a high pace early on that we can gave three or four riders left in a group of 30-40 riders going into the last 40k or so. Give it your best, guys!

Looking forward to the report, Marco! Should be a great race with Wisniowski, Bewley and Summerhill being the biggest favourites, eventhough riders like Blythe and others have shown they can handle the top 3 on the right day. Should make for exciting racing!

Hoping for a top 20 from Anderberg, but cobblestones aren't our thing this season, that's for sure. We're looking to gain XP points here, which isn't the greatest starting point thinking of scoring potential Pfft

Hopefully my riders can finish inside the top 8. Its possible atleast its a joke

The only race where Van Hooydonck scored, he was going into the early breakaway somehow.
Any points are welcome here.

Van der Hoorn to be the best placed here again I guess.

Compared to last year Teunissen is having a very mediocre season. Hope he can bounce back here.

Final PT wildcard after a podium in MSR and 6th in Moscow, because apparently i'm a better PT team than PCT team Pfft So lets see if Altur can finally justify the training or we confirm him as worst training spend in mg history.

Apart from Kamyshev's 2nd place at the E3 Prijs, the cobble races for my team haven't been successful this season. A podium here is minimum to justify the wages of my cobblers.

Weird to see Van Hooydonck`s now 2 best performances were when joining the break...25th is obviously not the needed big points but at least something.

thanks for the report. Congrats to the winner.

Shit, this is terrible. We not even failed to make up ground to Isostar but they actually used this race to gain ~90 points on us. They really are on fire lately... Congrats Cro, congrats Roman.

Thanks knockout Smile Great race for us, with everybody doing their work and home-grown Per finishing it off iwith a podium. Fantastic! Also congrats to roman, Bewley showing that he's still the king.

Teunissen finally strong enough to stay with the big guns again Smile And 8th is a solid result for him. Also very happy with the way Potts showed himself and grabbing 16th after that breakaway effort is pretty amazing.

Overall a good race for Gazelle.

Congrats to Bewley and his team.

Great race! Of course Bewley wins in the reduced sprint. I would have thought the cobbles would be more decisive. Overall I'm content with Spengler's 11th. He is definitely going to need much more training to be competitive in this division, as was proved by his results this year.

Sibilla 13th. Just when I was going to release him for nothing...

Thanks for the report! Kind of nice to see some things always stay the same with Bewley winning. I was about to say I think this might be the year someone else wins this.

Too bad Gerts lost contact in that finale, but 10th is a good result.

The one time Declerq tries the right thing, he gets unlucky.
And Moser taking big points is more bad news for us.

Happy with the performance! We did what I wanted us to do and good to see Wisniowski going on the attack himself. When it came down to a sprint, Bewley was always going to be the favourite, so very pleased with second place and congrats to Roman on yet another win here in the East Midlands!

Some good depth scoring also. Not quite sure what I think about the duo Wisniowski/Pedersen going forward. I'm guessing he just need some training to get on a bit higher level and from there he should be able to target the top 10s himself. He's of course helping Wisniowski quite a bit now, so might have to get in another 77+ domestique though to really free him.

Another very good race for Isostar. Starting to look very good for the title now.

Thanks for the report, Marco.

Of course Altur beats Summerhill in a non-scoring race  Why is my team better in PT than PCT races?! Still definitely was a waste training Altur...

Got to hand it to Bewley, absolute legend!

Thank you for the nice report, Marco!

Solid by Anderberg, can't say anything else seeing him home in 22nd place. Great win for Bewley after a tricky season for him and his standards this year. Well executed sprint!
