Berlin ProRace
The HC Berlin ProRace returns for its 9th edition. Six of the prior eight races were decided in a mass sprint and the with the parcours slightly flatter and reduced from 216km to 186km this year, another sprint looks likely.
In 2015 Michael Vink won solo by 25 seconds and the previous year it was George Bennett winning on his own, 48 second clear of the peloton. Other than that all sprint winners: Degenkolb (2018), Guerao (2017), Van der Sande (2016), Davis (2013) and Bennati (2012).
Of the prior winners only Degenkolb is back. He is joined by 2018 5th place Lahcen Saber and 2017 3rd place Roman Maksimov. Davide Appollonio has finished 6th both the last two years and he is back looking for the hat trick.
Taking a look at the team leaders we get 23 of 24 teams represented by a 79 SP or better sprinter (the 24th has a 78). Picking one leader for each team, sorted by SP+AC we get:
Degenkolb | Iberia - Team Degenkolb | 76 | 84 | 81 | 71 | Ahlstrand | Volvo acc. by Spotify | 74 | 83 | 82 | 73 | Maksimov | ENI - MOL | 72 | 81 | 84 | 69 | Boeckmans | Campari/Asahi development | 73 | 81 | 83 | 71 | Guarnieri | Delvaux | 76 | 82 | 81 | 76 | Reinhardt | Team UBS | 71 | 79 | 84 | 66 | Itami | Rakuten Pro Cycling | 75 | 80 | 82 | 67 | Cavendish | Kraftwerk Man Machine | 72 | 82 | 80 | 70 | Kip | Andorra Cycling Project | 69 | 80 | 82 | 63 | Silvestre | Berg Cycles | 78 | 80 | 81 | 71 | Avelino | Duolingo | 71 | 83 | 78 | 66 | Saber | Philips | 75 | 81 | 79 | 72 | Zabel | Desigual | 74 | 81 | 79 | 70 | Ciolek | Swisslion Cycling Team | 74 | 82 | 78 | 68 | Manninen | Valio - Viking Genetics | 74 | 80 | 80 | 75 | Salleh | Sauber Petronas Racing | 70 | 80 | 80 | 65 | Rowe | Xero Racing | 78 | 79 | 80 | 70 | Appollonio | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | 74 | 81 | 78 | 66 | Enger | cycleYorkshire | 73 | 81 | 78 | 73 | Van Asbroeck | Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam | 75 | 80 | 78 | 72 | Lavoine | Kulczyk - Alitalia | 73 | 80 | 78 | 64 | Ulanowski | Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff | 73 | 80 | 77 | 66 | Vantomme | Minions | 72 | 81 | 76 | 63 |
Degenkolb is looking good again but there is a lot of strong competition. Ten of the leaders boast 80+ sprint and acceleration. Given the deep field, flat parcours and shorter distance it doesn’t look promising for a late attacker. But in addition to Rowe, who could go this path instead of waiting for the sprint, top roulers include:
| | FL | SP | AC | RS | FI | Summerhill | Andorra Cycling Project | 78 | 70 | 73 | 72 | 81 | Breen | Delvaux | 77 | 73 | 72 | 72 | 74 | Gallego Martin | Iberia - Team Degenkolb | 77 | 62 | 60 | 62 | 80 | Feng | ISA – Hexacta | 78 | 60 | 62 | 72 | 74 | Arashiro | Rakuten Pro Cycling | 80 | 68 | 74 | 67 | 78 | Mundle | Sauber Petronas Racing | 79 | 59 | 69 | 73 | 80 |
Most notable is cobbles strong man Summerhill.
Turning to the support riders, nearly every team has at least one strong sprinter for a leadout but if we focus on riders with strong sprint and flat we get 8 teams with 3 strong flat/sprint riders backing up their leader:
Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam: Peeters, Bonifazio, Pelucchi
Volvo acc. by Spotify: Ariesen, Markus, Stallaert
Sauber Petronas Racing: Aregger, Chavanne, Page
Philips: Havik, Te Brake, Wippert
Kraftwerk Man Machine: Willwohl, Park, Gough
Duolingo: Bouglas, Chen, Merlier
Minions: Avila, Major, Drapac
Rakuten Pro Cycling: Zhao, Hayakawa, Liu
Only 1 of these 8 feature a leader near the top of the sprinter list so lets make Volvo’s Jonas Ahlstrand the favorite to take the 2019 edition of the Berlin ProRace. And we will go with Appollonio for 6th.

If they don't form a sprint train here, I give up on leadouts.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hahahaha. As if Appo has a chance to get 6th again. His hidden timing IQ stats suck way too much for that. I predict a zero pointer.

We must KIP on drilling it! Kip's had a strong performance this season so it's feasable to believe in him, his leadout and a very strong team for the flat is here, hoping there's wind as it could mix things up a lot aswell

A Top 10 is probably a realistic target to aim for but a Top 15 looks more likely. We need some luck from somewhere.

Silvestre has been constantly failing throughout the season so I'm not sure what to expect from this race. The minimum desirable would be a place in the top 10 but I'm not sure how the duo Fabio / Kupfernagel will behave.

In theory this should be one of Itami's best races. He's got great support, and the stage isnt too long or hilly.

Appo getting dropped on flats and trying to jump across the gap on his own with the peloton at full pace. Yep, that's about right.
I'm sticking to my word about sprint stages next year. They will be avoided at all costs.
Thanks for the report

I guess 11th is about par with this startlist and the randomness of sprints. Doesn't help us much...
Congrats to Berg and thanks for the report

Eh. Glad Rowe tried something again, obviously was hoping for something more after Veenendaal, but 6th is fine and actually pretty alright in a straight(ish) sprint. Thanks for the report Ulrich, great to have you reporting this year

After seeing that Maksimov isnt made the favourites list made by the game itself, i though the 8th place is very good
Thanks for the report. |

I didn't mean from 33K out!
No, great racing. I'm really happy with the team's performance. We always seem to ride agressively this year, compared to last year's flat races where we did nothing all race and finished 11th in the sprint.
Thanks for a very entertaining report!

Son of a bitch... Hard hit to take tbh Summerhill was in the brink of making this race an incredible success but finished outside the Top25 after that last final Km. The hit is because the move indeed succeeded, I envy but congratulate Silvestre and fintas, and thanks Ulrich for the work in the report!

Well based on how the race went, glad to not get a 0 pointer here tbh. Thought Arashiro had a great result in him for a moment too but still not really worse than expectations.
