There has been a good long history in Liechtenstein for the pro-tour, and that continues with one of the most difficult courses cyclists will ever have to deal with. A circuit with one brutal steep climb and the finish even higher makes for a very long day even for the climbers in the peloton. Thirteen times the peloton, or whats left of it, will have to challenge the circuit climb. On the Fourteenth trip the climb gets even longer as they finish further up on this diabolical race.
Make no mistake, this race only favors one thing and the past winners were all exceptional in that regard. Past winners include Simon Spilak, Rein Taaramäe, Andy Schleck three times victor here, the since retired Damiano Cunego, and the winner of the first edition, Angel Madrazo who returns as a top favorite along with Taaramäe, the only two previous winners in this race.
We aren't surprised that climbing skills will be required to win this race, but resistance to fatigue over the large amounts of climbing will be required, as well as overall stamina to endure the 240.6 kilometers of the race.
| | | | | | | | Rider | MO | RS | ST | Rider | MO | RS | ST | Madrazo | 85 | 80 | 81 | Sicard | 82 | 80 | 79 | Taaramäe | 85 | 80 | 79 | Uran | 82 | 75 | 81 | Pluchkin | 85 | 78 | 78 | Cattaneo | 82 | 76 | 80 | Dombrowski | 84 | 78 | 80 | Kudus | 82 | 79 | 77 | Morton | 84 | 78 | 79 | Keizer | 81 | 75 | 79 | Kritskiy | 84 | 76 | 78 | Barguil | 81 | 77 | 77 | Lecuisinier | 83 | 80 | 78 | Guldhammer | 81 | 74 | 75 | Denifl | 84 | 71 | 75 | Velits | 81 | 72 | 71 |
We have some of the elite climbers in this race, previous winners Madrazo and Taaramäe stand out as the top favorites with the PCT's top climber Pluchkin as well in that elite group.
The next group of favorites are maybe just a pedal stroke behind, as Dombrowski, Morton and Kritskiy will be looking to win the day as well, or push one of the top trio off the podium.
After that we look at Lecuisinier to make a good effort in the race, or the aging Denifl to show some of his former glory. I didn't specifically pick out downhill ability as a requirement for this race, but it certainly won't hurt. Look for Barguil or Preidler to maybe finish higher in the standing than expected as the best two descenders in a field that is otherwise very similar in that regard.

Always hated this race due to the far too extreme profile and only sent one mediocre climber so i only hope for finishing points. So ill alreay say thanks for covering this race and congrats to the winner.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Another victim of our Giro attack. Can only hope to see everyone finish, and maybe for Niu or Bevin to repeat their Pologne performances and score above minimum somehow. Break participation would be fun!

When your best climber is not even top15 and it`s clashing with the Giro as well...
Still hoping for quite a bit with Velits and Keinath here. Maybe one between 10th and 16th and one between 16th and 25th, which would be quite okay I guess.
The win normally can only go to one of the top3 as I think the -1 in mo for Dombrowski is too much already. Though he would be the only one capable to challenge them I guess. |

Kudus looks like fighting for a low Top10 spots, but we really need a big op to compensate for the Giro disaster so far

F*ckin yes, EWAN FOR THE WIIIIIIINNNNNN!!! You will all look stupid when i sweep the obvious sprint finish for a 1-5. The profile massively oversells the bumps....
oh, just been told we read the scale wrong and the race isn't 240m long and the climbs are not curb sized but mountain sized...

Well my climbing team is pretty much all at the Giro and my leader is Brown here so I don't expect much more than for a few of my riders to finish inside of the time limit

We obviously have high expectations for this one with Taaramäe, eventhough his support here is rather weak, due to the clash with the Giro.
Must say I expect a podium and hope for the win, but we shall see.
Looking forward to the race! |

Too bad that Stork didn't manage to make it 8 finishers for us, but he's only lvl2 after all. Decent Top 100 showings from our future stars Ganna and Madouas.
Glad to see Aker taking important points here!

Thank you, both cio93 and Marcovdw!
We needed that. Great to see Taaramäe deliver against such riders, especially after the worrying Tirreno-Adriatico. Hopefully this is a good sign for what's to come in the GT he rides as well, as we'll need him at his very best to stay away from relegation.
Very happy with that win, especially as he had to do most of it on his own seeing our lineup here.
And thank you for the report, Kentaurus |
