Привет (according to Google Translate). We're in Russia for the GP Moscow, a flat PT classic. The last two editions have been won by the Evonik team, both from late attacks instead of the usual sprint. A great number of elite sprinters are on the startlist, as are some strongmen who will try to surprise the trains again. If we're not served with great racing, at least we're served with great pictures from the Kremlin and Red Square, and the losers can forget their sorrow with bottles of vodka.
Profile
The race is flat, though that doesn't mean it will end in a sprint. What might not be clear from the profile is a small incline in the final five kilometers, which might encourage the late attacks and derail the sprint trains.
Startlist
Team | Sprinter | SP | ACC | FL | Leadout | SP | ACC | FL | Aegon - Lavazza | Swift | 84 | 82 | 74 | Bauhaus | 78 | 75 | 74 | Air France - KLM | Kennaugh | 82 | 81 | 77 | Clarke | 79 | 78 | 72 | Aker - MOT | Vesely | 81 | 80 | 73 | Trentin | 75 | 76 | 74 | Bennelong - Mitchelton | Howard | 82 | 79 | 76 | Edmondson | 77 | 75 | 73 | Berg Cycles | Silvestre | 80 | 81 | 78 | McEvoy | 75 | 79 | 70 | Desigual | Zabel | 81 | 79 | 74 | Maksimov | 81 | 84 | 72 | EA Vesuvio | Afewerki | 79 | 80 | 73 | Galdoune | 72 | 72 | 69 | eBuddy | Grosu | 83 | 80 | 73 | Jiang | 73 | 73 | 70 | Evonik - ELKO | Van Stayen | 84 | 78 | 76 | Van Avermaet | 77 | 77 | 77 | Festina - Dexia | Coquard | 84 | 83 | 73 | Tzortzakis | 81 | 77 | 73 | Gazelle | Furdi | 69 | 72 | 73 | Senyenov | 68 | 73 | 70 | Grieg - Eftel | Boeckmans | 81 | 83 | 73 | Wisniowski | 73 | 76 | 80 | Hugo Boss | Kristoff | 83 | 79 | 75 | Aberasturi | 79 | 78 | 74 | Isostar Slovenija | Kump | 81 | 80 | 74 | Kamberaj | 75 | 74 | 72 | Moser - Sygic | Chen | 79 | 78 | 74 | Baska | 74 | 75 | 74 | Porto - Prio | Avelino | 83 | 78 | 71 | Carvalho | 77 | 77 | 73 | RBC Pro Cycling | Houle | 79 | 78 | 78 | Young | 78 | 77 | 74 | Team Puma - SAP | Demare | 82 | 81 | 73 | Anton Martin | 76 | 76 | 70 | Team Reddit | Meyer | 80 | 76 | 72 | Canelon | 76 | 81 | 75 | Team Tinkoff | Porsev | 79 | 80 | 74 | Samolenkov | 78 | 77 | 72 | Team UBS | Page | 76 | 77 | 73 | Bohli | 74 | 68 | 72 | T-Mobile | Docker | 79 | 77 | 72 | Soupe | 79 | 77 | 72 | Volvo acc. by Spotify | Ahlstrand | 83 | 82 | 74 | Bertilsson | 79 | 77 | 73 | Xero Racing p/b Octagon | Rowe | 79 | 80 | 78 | Van der Sande | 79 | 79 | 75 |
Nearly every team brings is a sprinter, so we give a team-by-team overview, also looking at the leadout.
Let's start at the defending champions at Evonik. Van Stayen is one of the better sprinters, though lacking a bit of acceleration. His train is build out of riders who might have a chance on their own, so the team has many cards to play.
Teams who do bring a proper sprinter-leadout combination are Aegon, Festina, Hugo Boss and Volvo. Swift, Coquard, Kristoff and Ahlstrand are the names which will have to finish it off.
Grosu could also belong to the category of top sprinters, except he doesn't really have a leadout, thus requiring other trains to get him up to speed perhaps. Avelino has Carvalho as guide, but other than that no support.
Outsiders for the win are Demare, Howard, Kennaugh. One good positioning, one good sprint and a bit of luck and everything is possible.
We might also see some intra-team rivalries. Zabel and Maksimov are on the same team, but who is going to leadout who? Or will they sprint against each other, even against manager's orders?
Other names for a possible top ten, surprising top five or lucky win are Boeckmans, Kump, and Vesely.
Reddit and Xero are PCT wildcard teams. Both bring a decent sprinter, Meyer and Rowe. The former won the 2014 edition, and has a good leadout (or rival) in Van der Sande.
Only two teams did not bring a top sprinter. UBS has Page, who is still young and could learn from this experience. Gazelle nominates Furdi as lead sprinter, but he'd be lucky if he sprints to a top 100.
Strongmen | FL | SP | ACC | Wisniowski | 80 | 73 | 76 | Stoltz | 80 | 62 | 74 | Kneisky | 79 | 67 | 71 | Manamalage | 79 | 55 | 56 | Dzamastagic | 78 | 76 | 78 | Oss | 78 | 74 | 74 | Mas | 78 | 71 | 78 | Summerhill | 78 | 70 | 73 | Malori | 78 | 63 | 68 | Van Avermaet | 77 | 77 | 77 | Bar | 77 | 77 | 76 | Gerts | 77 | 72 | 70 | Wohler | 77 | 71 | 72 | Andersen | 77 | 71 | 70 | Kamyshev | 77 | 66 | 60 |
As history shows, who should not count out a late attack. Some specialist in this discipline, or cobblestone/time trial specialists, appear at the start.
One should note the three Evonik riders here: Dzamastagic, Stoltz, Van Avermaet. Two former winners, Evonik is throwing everything on this race.
Wisniowski and Summerhill are known for riding on cobblestones, but some asphalt road and wind will suit them as well.
As for the time trialists, Kneisky, Malori, Wohler have experience in riding alone at a fast pace for a given amount of time. Instead of against the clock, they have to do it against a hungry peloton with sprint trains chasing after them.

Our PT appearances have been poos but this is our best chance to break that! Former winner Rowe back and fellow tough sprinter Tosh both nice shots to surprise especially if Evonik let’s us come along for their amazing ride. They’re well suited and if they work together I hope we can have a really cool race. A breakaway appearance too would be nice as we haven’t had one in our wildcard entries yet.

A top 10 for Vesely would be a good result here, especially after Ciolek's latest fail. Hopefully Vesely can make the most of a rare chance to lead. Swift must be the main favourite, just ahead of Coquard. |

This will be a boring sprint finish. Please ignore my team. Nothing there to see. Don't expect any late attacks, your team can calmly ride to the finish line. Thank you.

Also: has it happened before that a team brought the previous two race winners plus a different rider with the #1 jersey to a race? Should be pretty rare

We have a "Win goal" here, but obviously it's a long stretch, and we can't expect that to happen - but we had to pick something, and this seemed like as good as bet as any.
Our train haven't worked out well enough going into the very final, as seen in Germany, hopefully Tzortzakis can do the last bit to ensure Coquard fighting for a top spot. With no Degenkolb and Bewley present, he should (on paper) be a 3-star favorite, and thus it will be possible for us to make a train.
That is if we actually get down to a sprint.
We are quite far down in the startlist, which makes me get an eary feeling.
It is important for us to get as close to Evonik as possible in terms of points, and as far ahead of Vesuvio, T-Mobile and Gazelle as possible. If we do that, we might actually have a shot at ending the PT in top 5 which would be a huge succes!

Hmm, unfortunately that was not quite good enough. Also we don't get a lot of points from riders finishing in the top 50. Just two guys...
Evonik outscores us by a lot here, which is not ideal by any means!
On the bright side, we easily outscores EA Vesuvio, Gazelle and T-Mobile who are the most likely teams to overtake us in the top 3-5 battle. By now we should be very close to Vesuvio in 3rd, but Evonik are also very close after two very strong races. Only Rund um Köln can possibly keep us ahead of them going into the final 2 races...
We should have a pretty good gap to T-Mobile and Gazelle now, so fingers crossed that we can keep them behind to secure atleast 5th.

I think i like this race
Threepeat with 3 different riders is totally insane. Im stunned
We needed this result for a chance at a final ranking attack and im super glad that we got it. 4 other riders finished in the top 50 which is very helpful too. Thanks for mentioning Nooytens as the domestique to control the early attempts. Love these small hints of usefulness of domestiques

Great to see Grosu on the podium, so close to actually getting second.
I think this was his last race of the season. His greatest season yet with podium in Milano - Sanremo and 3 Tour de France stage wins.

Congrats to Evonik for the triple. Pretty cool MG history.
7th is below expectations and I was already worried when seeing Sbaragli not as final leadout, which works better.
Still Swift waited too long anyway.
Thanks for the report. |

Wow what an amazing Evonik triple - three in a row in different ways with three different riders who have all been on the squad for other occasions. Just stunning, congrats knockout.
Really bad AI from us with no break attempts or positioning but also blame it on the riders a bit. Shame we’ve wasted all our PT outings this year

Great sprint by Kennaugh. Looked to be starting from a horrible position, but must have been fast on the last metres. Can't expect to beat a perfect sprint by Van Stayen. |

Two top 20 is decent, but had hoped to see Boeckmans crack the top 10. Great win by Evonik, congrats knockout!
