Grand Prix de la Ville d'Oran
Category: C1 | 132,0 km | terrain: bumpy | Algeria |
The Grand Prix de la Ville d'Oran is a new race on the block. The short flat classic in Algeria appeares for the first time in the man game schedule, and thus it's even more of a motivation to write the name in the palmares of the race first. Most likely a sprinter will be the first winner, but with a very short but steep rise pretty close to the finishing line anything can happen. We most likely expect a messy sprint though, where mostly the pure speed matters.

Once again the big favourite is Jonas Ahlstrand, who beneath the best sprinters stats also has a strong train in Kruopis and Vedel, who also should be able to face every difficulties the track offers.
Very surprisingly Valio hasn't taken Lo Cicero with them, so instead Guerao and Avelino might be able to recieve a train. The former can only hope for a slow race for his train not to collapse, while Porto also has something to offer, but the leader might have trouble to keep up with the acceleration of his leadout. All in all the 3 team might have equal leadouts, but the harder the race goes the more it will play in the cards of the race favourite.
Thorsen participating in the sprint would be a very surprising sight, on the other side Vantomme has some decent support to have a chance. Nelson should be the only CT rider containing for a top 5, but shouldn't be strong enough to compete for a win. For Zabel it's the same, but when the race goes hard he might go stronger.
A really tough race would see some other riders in higher chances: In first line the guys that offer a decent punch as well - Kump and Impey. Both will really try to make their team put the hurts on anybody. Other benefitters of that would be Van Asbroeck and Van der Sande, Haussler as well though he might lack the acceleration.
Granjel Cabrera should take a special mention if he can conserve his America form. Bouhanni and Serebriakov are top 10 guys, but nothing more. Results like that would also be a pleasure for the other CT riders here, in first line Krieger and Fonseca. Special mentions for Reinhardt, who deserves a special mention for his acceleraion. But after a horrible season he might use some training to be competitive next season.
Of the top puncheurs the best prospects might well work for a sprint. Hermans and Vermeltfoort would offer a perfect skillset as well as Jans, Bernas and Mørkøv, but they all have some ambitious captain here. We instead focus on the likes of Eritel duo Teklit and Debesay that look well rounded.
A good bet might also be the finessuers. While the Arrinera duo of Maes and Bialoblocki for some reason haven't attacked in these kind of races all season long, we might instead see Kuznetsov on the move. Again Hugo Boss and Netia with options here, but it's doubtful that they really go for it.

Can anyone tell me why I decided to not bring Kadri here? Serebriakov won't do a thing as usual, so my hopes for this race are on Kuznetsov, who hopefully goes for a late attack here.

Cool another race right coming along, thanks for the quickness Croatia! VDS my main gun here, hoping he can carry some form from Ukraine to Algeria. Due to hills, could well be a outside bet for a podium.
Now more than ever, we need a strong finish to close the month.

Repping the CT! One of our rare forrays to C1 this season, due to having more sprinters than race days. Notably, no Souper Soupe for us, leaving Ewan as the key man for Ricki. Ricki has proven track record against a lot of these other sprinters so hopefully he can pop it in towards the front of the pack and nab some nice points. Also a great XP gainer for a couple of riders as well. Still, it's C1 and that's a risk especially in a tight title fight.

I'm glad I wasn't stupid enough to select this when planning, there was a point where I was about to pick this for Ulissi instead of Nantou which comes on the same day, but it's not even close to suiting him as well as that. Money's on Ahlstrand.

Sadly Lo Cicero didn't have enough race days to go here as well. Hoping that Breschel can pull out something, perhaps with a late attack.

I hope those bumps in the stage do damage in the main sprinters, otherwise Haussler will not have any hypothesis

My team has been successful in the past in Algeria so let's hope we can continue that! Bouhanni for a flat out sprint or potential results from Fernandez if the uphill finish plays a part.

Please don't mention Morkov in the preview, this is the around the time of season where he begins to create problems. Bernas was an interesting pick though, love him as a rider but doubt he'll do anything with Vantomme (or worse, Morkov) in the team.
Really just wanting the hill not to be too much for Vantomme or to mess up the team, guess we'll see in the race. My money's on Impey though and I want Thorsen to win of course.
Another fantastically detailed preview Croatia, thanks for that.

The usual suspects are here with the welcoming surprise of Lo Cicero's absence, which should help spice things up. I'm no sure but I believe I'm in need of points so a good result here would be great for our promotion aspirations.
Thanks for the preview, Croatia!

on paper a good race for Kump, but he have failed massively in races much more fitting than this aswell, so confidence at an all time low regarding Kump here.
Anyway it would be nice if Kump could deliver in a classic for once except for the cobble fest he did so well.

Good sprint race with a lot of attacks, thanks the excellent report Croatia, and congrats Miguel, could be an important win for you.
Our team having a kinda hilarious race once again, fortunately Morkov stayed out of the way fortunately, then Vantomme positioned himself while the team organised themselves to lead him out without managing to find him, before I guess collarborating to put Reckweg, Franczak and Bernas in the top 20 and somehow managing to lose Sobota in the process.
Either way, got pretty good points for having 8th, 13th, 17th and 18th, so kinda happy in a weird way, always fun to watch the team make a qualified mess of itself and still kinda succeed anyway.

A good outcome for us in the end, it's quite a lot better than I expected beforehand. Kuznetsov with a bit more FL nerf in the offseason will be a serious contender in this kind of races in the future after already showing a good display of power here.
Thanks for a great report!

Mixed emotions about this race. A fifth place is obviously decent for Kump, but sitting on a wheel who cant follow on the slight uphill is pretty bad. Besides, why cant the team create its own train for once, such a dissapointing thing to witness to see that our team are unable to do what they have they have skillsets for in 90% of these races.
Cheers croatia, and congratz Miguel, what a form Granjel is in!
