Strada Appia Antica
The Strada Appia Antica goes into it's fourth edition (third as a ProTour event) and offers the world's best cobblers another chance to grab a prestigious victory.
We're heading for Roma, following the famous paths with several challenging cobbled sectors (also close to the finish).. defending champion? Sam Bewley. Former race winner? Fabian Cancellara. Oh, and Bert Wellens (who won the race as a CDiv2 event back in 2012).
The Startlist
The Favorites | Rider | COB | SPR | | Rider | COB | SPR | Burghardt | 84 | 69 | | Gusev | 79 | 56 | Bewley | 83 | 83 | | Teunissen | 79 | 65 | Cancellara | 82 | 70 | | Fenn | 79 | 70 | Summerhill | 82 | 70 | | Vanbilsen | 78 | 70 | Blythe | 82 | 76 | | Kristoff | 78 | 81 | Zepuntke | 81 | 72 | | Altur | 78 | 70 | Sibilla | 81 | 66 | | Jacobs | 78 | 65 | Baugnies | 80 | 65 | | Kluge | 77 | 77 | Franzoi | 80 | 56 | | Breschel | 77 | 77 | Kamyshev | 80 | 64 | | Sinkeldam | 77 | 68 | Nolf | 80 | 63 | | Gaudin | 77 | 57 | Senechal | 80 | 67 | | Lhotellerie | 77 | 59 |
Well, of course it's Bewley. 2nd in 2013, 1st in 2014. Dominating the season so far.
And then it's probably Cancellara. 1st in 2013, 2nd in 2014. Coming back to beat Bewley this year?
How about Summerhill then? 4th in 2013, 4th in 2014. Should aim for the podium at least.
Of course Burghardt as another top-favorite.. struggling last year (12th), still okay (5th) two years ago.
Blythe (6th last season) as the last big gun and definitely as dangerous as all those mentioned names.
The usual suspects then: Sibilla/Nolf, Baugnies, Franzoi, Kamyshev, Senechal, a strong Gusev.. Kristoff, Kluge or Breschel as serious threats as well. They all will hope for a bigger group entering Rome to battle for line honours!

Uh, would have loved to see Strava here but alas, the team is not there yet. Maybe downgrade that race We'll be a great race surely.

Top 10 is the goal, but as the preview rightfully says, we'll need some luck in how the race is played out. With a little bit of that luck Kristoff could even fight for more, but 8th-10th will surely do.
And then I'm hoping Kogstad Ringheim and Breen do something constructive as they've been somewhat disappointly invisible so far in the classics, not making any splits, trying an attack/breakaway or anything. Most likely due to Kristoff's status as leader, but let's hope one of them can make the first proper split if so happens, and there are 30-50 riders left.
Another one for Bewley to loose, which he just refuses to do this season. There has been some great racing here in the past though, definitely hoping for an exciting race again, eventhough it might harm Kristoff's chances. |

Mangame betting will refuse to take any on Bewley... is it even worth reading the report?

Would love to see Danny steal some points out of the PT again. Certainly a podium finish is possible, perhaps even more if we can wheelsuck Bewley. Should be an exciting race, or at least the second half after the climb will be eventful.

Well, Bewley better should try to win this race! This race is my 4th goal of the season, and as Bewley was able to successfully accomplish my win goals in Flanders and Roubaix, he better should try to not fail here after not the best possible Giro from Velits! Even through the 3rd place was maybe a little bit too much to expect from Peter, it would be cool to have a realistic chance to successfully fulfill 4 from 5 goals of the most difficult team goal option available (23 points). Oh and in another words we need to really score some points here, Vuelta is not being a good race for us and Dauphine/Suisse are likely not going to be much better. Go Bewley!

Bewley won. I am shocked. But seriously, when will he stop winning? I am happy with 9th place here, Franzoi (probably) has the worst sprint stat of the group he was in, so hard for him to do much better there at the end.

I was expecting a bit more. Sinkeldam seems to be scoring more fails that success in cobbles so far.

5 wins in 6 races for Bewley is just huge - but he hasn't managed 4 in a row like Ponzi yet! It was good that it wasnt quite so straight forward, but Cancellara's couldn't quite pull off possibly his last chance for a PT classic win.
Nice that Schlechter made it into the Top 50, and Paajanen ensured we featured in the report.
