Last season's recap:
Spoiler
S1: Bonsucro getting off to a flying start in the TTT.
S2: Rodrigues putting in an attack that would see him take the stage and GC lead.
S3: Schurter takes the stage and GC lead from a break. Losada and Arroyo the best out of the bunch.
S4: On the mountain top finish, Tiernan-Locke, the puncheur prevails. Rodrigues was right up there and takes the GC going into the final stage.
S5: Sobal wins from the break. The same stage will round off this edition of the race.
Down from 5 stages to 4 the Tour d'Azerbaijan is a different route this time around. Two mountainous stages, including a mountain top finish, are sandwiched between two flat stages.
| Flat | Mountain | Anacona | 69 | 79 | Signorini | 59 | 78 | Ochoa Quintero | 67 | 77 | Dyachenko | 67 | 76 | Nieve | 67 | 76 | Orozco | 64 | 76 | Novak | 70 | 76 | Sørensen | 71 | 76 | Brandt | 67 | 76 | Bagot | 68 | 76 | Ndbri | 65 | 76 | Kudus | 67 | 75 | Girardi | 67 | 75 | Feillu | 67 | 75 | Weber | 70 | 75 | Malacarne | 67 | 75 |
------ ------ ------
Unlike last season it looks like it might be all about the mountain goats here, with no hills and no TT/TTT. Anacona starts as the favourite and rightfully so, he comes into this race on great form after picking up the GC at the Giro del Trentino. He is well supported by the likes of Sørensen. Top favourite.
After him you can't rule out Signorini, who finished 2nd in the ToME. Few races will suit the pure climber more than this one, though Nieve is present for plan b. He hasn't shown too well this season but Ochoa Quintero is bound to deliver some time, isn't he?
Dyachenko leads for the main CT title contenders, how will he fare with the strongest core of his squad away in Malaysia? Orozco leads for Alpina-Avianca, however, he rarely delivers consistently, he is well supported by Weber & Godoy. A whole host of other decent climbers can look to crack the top 10 in GC or higher if on a good day. Including Kudus, who will be targeting the white jersey for his PCT outfit.

Our only CT race this season, am looking forward to this one. Kudus gets a chance to lead, hoping he can break into the top-10 and get the white jersey. Other than that this was a filler so not expecting many points.
Nice to come up against Ndbri here as well, will be supporting him along with our riders. Thanks for the preview The Rider. |

Have a top 5 objective here if I remember correctly, seeing the startlist and the profile I don't think any of the lads will manage.
Anacona it is.

We have one cleat goal in Azerbaijan: Win.
A podium will be somewhat disappointing and anything less just horrible.
Lots of strong climbers that will need to be controlled though...

Hoping for another Gian Piero miracle! We've got an alright team here, so we should be competitive in all stages. Here's hoping Nateghi can finally be competitive in a sprint.

Bleh Hossein, beaten by your (mediocre) lead out man. Signorini top 15 on a flat stage again!
Thanks for the report!

Thanks for the thanks!
Into the mountains. Some great action to be had here. Stage 3 has to be a contender for CT stage of the season, if I may say so myself! |

Cool to see Kudus going so well. Anacona will surely be hard to beat on Stage 3 though

Cio won't like to see Kenya also doing well here
Nice stage indeed. Kinda unlucky Anacona, but he looked strong and should be able to come first of the big guns next time.

Really great to see Kudus doing well at this level.
First attacking and then getting a podium is really unexpected. If he can hold onto that on the MTF next stage we could be in for a decent points haul here after all

liking our chances with a strong team!
Stage one was nice with a 6th place for Abdallah!
Novak continues his dissapointing season in the mountains with a 15th place on stage two but at least he's 10th on the GC |
