One week of undulating terrain greet the riders in the much maligned Tour de Pologne, with the stage set for a mix of sprinters and puncheurs to take the limelight in Poland. The looped circuit of stage 6 looks like it will be a tough day and could provide the GC winner.
Race History
In 2007, the first season of management game racing, the Tour de Pologne was a ProTour race. Allan Davis (Discovery Channel) and Stuart O'Grady (Francaise des Jeux) had a battle of the Australians, as they took two sprint stages apiece, but the race hotted up on stage 6, with Josep Jufre (Predictor - Lotto) taking a stunning solo stage win and Michael Boogerd (Crédit Agricole) taking over the yellow jersey after distancing the peloton.
However, stage 7 saw Paolo Savoldelli (Liquigas) ride solo and take a tremendous victory, winning the GC by 29 seconds. Stuart O'Grady won the Points classification by 3 points over Allan Davis, Josep Jufre was rewarded for his solo heroics with the KOM, Jelle Vanendert (Liquigas) was best young rider and Predictor - Lotto the best team.

2008 saw the race feature again in the ProTour (and featured management game legend Theo Bos), and opened with a TTT, which was taken by Carlsberg, who received the same time as France Televisions. Stage 2 saw a 9 man BOTD take a 1'34 victory over the peloton, led home by Leonardo Bertagnolli (Domina Vacanze), who immeditely took yellow to replace his zebra stripe outfit.
A series of sprints over the next 3 stages saw Juan Van Heerden take two wins (Ferrari - Guerciotti), and then stage 6 arrived, where Michael Boogerd (Crédit Agricole) won from a selection of 4 riders to take the lead on the penultimate stage for the second year running. This year however, he retained the lead on the final stage to finally win the Tour de Pologne.
Juan Van Heerden took the points jersey, Franco Pellizotti (Telefonica), second overall, took the KOM, Vincenzo Nibali (Domina Vacanze) won the best young rider and Domina Vacanze also were best team

The race disappeared for a few years, until returning last year in the Continental Tour. This was the year of the Italians, with Claudio Corioni (Venchi) opening up the race with a sprint win. He held the lead up until stage 4, where the BOTD stayed away by nearly four minutes. Gatis Smukulis (Trilux - Falke) took the stage, Pieter Ghyllebert (California Giant Berry Farms) took the lead.
Stage 5 saw the first hills of the race, and Francesco Ginanni (Vespa) showed his class with a solo victory, also taking the race lead by 3 seconds. He extended his lead to a minute on the next stage, and finished as the winner of the Tour de Pologne.
Claudio Corioni took the points jersey by a solitary point over Ginanni, Jordi Grau (UniCredit) the KOM, Cesare Di Maggio (Venchi) the best young rider and Bianchi the best team

Startlist
There's an interesting mix of printers and puncheurs here. Starting with the sprinters, and it's tough to call who will do well here. There's plenty of extremely quick riders, like Thorsen (Allianz), Maksimov (Privatbank) and Lay (Iberia), but will they have the stamina to compete at the end of the stage, or even be there. Will the small peloton (89 riders) help or hinder them? We then have slower sprinters with more likelihood of being in good shape at the end of the stage, with Renshaw (Cadburys), Speirs (Magna) and Cano (BNCR) all hoping to feature.
We then have our puncheurs. As you can tell by the startlist screenshot, Cyanide's startlist generator would appear to favour sprinters, so will Rodriguez and Sanchez (Iberia), two of the strongest riders on paper, be given the leading role, or why Cyanide AI sacrifice their chances for Lay? Other strong riders include Weening (Gazelle), my favourite named rider Mehr-Wenige (Adira), Scarponi (Kappa - ENI) and Niemiec (Credexbank).

Great preview Crommy. Should be again a fight between the big three. This time, I hope that Dehr - Menige take's the win. |

Home tours for both Niemiec and Golas, hoping they can produce in front of their home fans, however Niemiec has been extremely poor this season and fighting to keep his place as Team Leader. I do expect Golas to come close to winning a stage or two though.

I clearly targeted this race. A Sanchez - Rodriguez combo should give us atleast a podium spot and a top 10 place plus a stage win.
Everything Lay gets in the flat stages is extra.

Finally we are back in action .. Although our team is not the best, the truth is that we are here to win. The competition is strong with Rodriguez, Sanchez, Weening, Scarponi and Niemiec, all possibilities to make a good race. I do not think sprinters are capable of overcoming the first and sixth stage without losing too much time, so the victory will go to one of the names listed above

Scarponi should be able to fight for a top 3 here. Has a single helper in Failli, but he has shown himsalf able to win this kind of races before.
Lasca should also be in the front on the easier stages. He has delivered before on harder sprint stages, and stage three should suit him well. |

I hope for a top10 in the GC and some action in the BODs.
Almost all the big names are here so our expectations aren't high

Man, I did not send a strong team here.
I even think this is a goal race for me.
Good planning ftw

What a win from Torckler and another win from Cadbury. Shame their going to disband at the end of the season. |

Torckler continues to put himself in the shop window, nice win there. Cadburys taking a lucrative opening stage. Great

Shame there were no real gaps...
But on the other side, Polivoda now has a chance to take the leader jersey... If only I hadn't brought Maksimov...

It was unfortunate that no differences have made In this stage, but it was still a promising start for our teams with Mher-Wenige in 5th position ...
And a good win for Cadbury

Cool preview, and very enjoyable report from stage 1!
Scarponi is probably the day's big winner - Torckler aside. Those bonus seconds could come in handy for him later in the race.

Our first race goal of the year; we need a top 10 in GC. There's strong competition here, but our goal shouldn't be a problem if stage 6 is as selective as it should be.
Nice preview! Cool to get some historical perspective.
And strong win from Torckler. Guess I should've brought Nardin here.
Scarponi doing great business for the GC indeed.
