Spoiler After being inspired a lot by Ian Butlers story about Roberto Velásquez ( Click here!) I decided to make a story with a big talent. Of course it won’t be a copy of his story style, but it will be a look back on his career even though I didn’t think about that when I got the idea.
The rider I have chosen is a fantasy rider coming from Mexico named Luis Jiménez. He is a rider that can basically do anything – or at least he can at the best of his career. He starts primarily as a climber/hilly specialist though.
He will probably win quite much so if you don’t like that kind of rider then this is not yours to follow. But try anyway ‘cause I hope to make a great and interesting story!
#Intro
The first time the public heard of this young Mexican was at the start of 2012. He had just signed his very first professional contract. He had signed with the little Spanish team, Caja Rural. He was just a young man, 22 years old, and his great amount of talent was yet to be seen. Anyway Caja Rural saw something in him. Something that they a few years later could be thankful for that they had seen. Because what they had seen in him wasn’t just like any other big talent it was something special, something new but also old for the cycling world. The manager of Caja Rural back then said this about the day when Luis Jiménez signed the contract.
“I think we have found one of the future greats of this sport. Luis has something special, he has the gift. The gift any rider in this world can only dream about - he can do everything. I see no limit for his potential really.”
From that day it would only be a matter of time before the whole cycling world got to know him. Surely you can still remember when YOU first saw him in action, can’t you?

Eurosport, Tour de San Luis, January 2012.
"And now the favorites are going into action. Attack by Devenyns and Possoni! Marczynski goes with them and who is that? We have a Caja Rural rider with them too. (…) The Caja Rural rider seems to be a young Mexican, Luis Jiménez. I have never seen him before. (…) 15 kilometers to go. Devenyns attacks again he has a gap now. But now the Mexican comes to him what a pace he is riding! (…) And he goes just past Devenyns who almost stands still on the road."
"We are now under the 10 kilometer port and our young Mexican is still at the front. He is alone in front of the big peloton. (…) Surely he has some talent, lots of talent! (…) His gap is getting bigger now, 30 secs, 40 secs. I think he can do this! (…)"
"Simon and Moser are closing in on him now but he can’t miss this! (…) The last few meters for our new young star! Luis Jiménez is the winner! What a surprise!"
After the race he talked to a journalist.
Interviewer: What a great race for you today, no one expected it.
Luis: Yeah I felt quite good out there. My legs were good but I didn’t think I could do this.
Interviewer: So you are surprised by yourself?
Luis: You can say that yes!
Interviewer: Isn’t it fantastic to stand here already just as your career has started?
Luis: It feels good yes. But there is more to come from me.
Interviewer: What do you mean by that, do you plan on winning this race now?
Luis: You will see, you will see.
Interviewer: Thanks for your time Luis. Congratulations.

After a short TT the 5th stage of Tour de San Luis was about to take place. Luis was 3rd in the table, just 6 seconds behind the leader.
Eurosport, Tour de San Luis, January 2012.
"We are back here after a commercial break and what a way to be back! We have favorites in the attack! Let’s see who is up front. (…) It seems like our little Mexican from stage 3 is up for something again. Arroyo and Cataldo is just in front of him while Kiryienka and Velits is behind him. (…)"
Moments later:
"No one can follow him today. He is just riding his own incredibly fast tempo. (…) Look at the asphalt; he already has fans writing his name! (…) Kruijswijk and Kangert tries to follow him but he is just too fast! (…)"
"And our young Mexican does it once again! Winning the 5th stage of Tour de San Luis, now taking the leaders jersey. (…) What a nice found by Caja Rural, this kid can become something great!"
Stage result
1 | Luis Jiménez | Caja Rural | 3h51'07 | WildDog | 2 | Moreno Moser | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 32 | | 3 | Steven Kruijswijk | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 40
Overall standings
1 | Luis Jiménez | Caja Rural | 16h14'14 | WildDog | 2 | Moreno Moser | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 34 | | 3 | Tiago Machado | RadioShack - Nissan | + 56
Two stages later Luis stood as the overall winner of Tour de San Luis. His first ever stage race and he had won it. Surely that shows just a little of the potential he got.
His comments to the press were like this:
"I’m absolutely delighted with this win. I came here to Argentina to show myself to the world. I didn’t expect to win the whole race! I just can’t describe how I feel, but it’s very good. Be sure of that!"
Final standing

Luis’ next race was the small spanish stage race in Andalucía. Containing 1 prologue, 2 flats and 2 hilly stages some experts thought that he stood a good chance of winning the race. But Luis himself knew it was going to be difficult. He said this before the start.
"With riders like Evans, Costa and Luis Leon I don’t expect to win this. (…) My goal is to win the young riders classification. (…) What about a stage win you say? That would be good too, but don’t ask too much. (…) We will see how things pan out."
Going under the 10 km port Luis did what later became his trademark. Attacking at the bottom of the final climb. He got some help from his Panamanian teammate Yelko Gomez and together they catched the early breakaway group.
Not long after Luis decided to go by himself. With a fast pace he drove away. Later on the climb it seemed like he would be catched again though. A trio with Sanchez, Costa and Barredo was chasing him down.
In the end he couldn’t resist them and on the final meters he dropped from first to third, watching Luis Leon Sanchez taking the win. The four riders had a gap to the rest of the field, so after the stage they were 1 to 4 in the general classification as well.
Stage result
1. Luis Leon Sanchez - Rabobank
2. Rui Costa - Movistar - (s.t.)
3. Luis Jimenez - Caja Rural (s.t.) |
