PT Ranking Update #4 - Teams
And we finish April, always a crucial month in the PT season, with two monuments, 1 GT and the start of the Ardennes. This is a real moving month in the division. Let's see who has made the biggest rise and fall for this month.
There was no rest in the PT calendar this month as we went straight from Ronde to the Hell of the North Paris-Roubaix. Mads Pedersen finished off a fairly disspointing Classics season by turning it into a great classics season by winning the big one in style! Grieg-Maersk scored a welcome 338pts as well to boot. Cedevita were the 2nd top scorers and 2nd in the race with Ivan Siric winning the small sprint behind the runaway leader 250pts for them in another strong performance. Per and Carlsberg once again round out a top 3 team finish in the classics with 210pts and an all-around impressive campaign for them.
Next was the first Grand Tour of the season at the Giro. A wild ride of ups and downs (something i think we can now expect in PCM24 onwards), eventually we ended up with a settled and expected top 3.
Eventually is probably the right way to describe Kudus performance in the Giro, he didn't do it flashy but he got the job done on the stage that mattered most but and this may sound strange for a GT winner 706pt total is the lowest GT score this Decade and probably one of the lowest of All-Time (without this writer wanting to go down that rabbit hole ) 1027pt overall for the Swiss team is clearly nothing scoff at but I feel they perhaps wanted more.
Ended up as the 2nd top scorers of the race. Brandon McNulty long run in the Magilia Rosa and Filippo Ganna win on stage 1 contributed to a heavy score of 867pts, despite not being on the final podium from a rankings perspective, a strong race.
cycleYorkshire managed to be the 3rd highest scorers of the race Salem Kemboi and his monster sprinting performance landed 422pt the 2nd most by a sprinter with Lachlan Morton adding another 279pt giving a very healthy total for the English team of 772pts. Polar , Indosat Ooredoo and
Cedevita were the next 3 highest scorers all pretty much one man band performances with Egan Bernal scoring 582 of Polar 729pt, Fernando Gaviria got 480 of Indosat 684pts and Tadej Pogacar 488pts of Cedevita 684pt.
Other notable scorers were Tinkoff Team - La Datcha with 584pt, Jura GIANTS with 568pt, Valentin Darbellay scoring a massive 424pts and Los Pollos Hermanos, the only other team above 500pts with 549pt. Clement Champoussin scoring 329pt was the other notable individual performance.
While the Giro was running, there was the small matter of the Tour of Slovenia in the PTHC category. Which in PT terms, was a 1-team race. EA Vesuvio and their super TT duo of Tom Wirtgen and Mads Würtz combined for 406pt by far and away the leading score. With only Indosat Ooredoo and Fastned breaking the 150pt
The PT classic of the month was filled with GP Lichtenstein. A weak startlist for the race meant only one winner was expected and Silvio Herklotz does what he always does and delivers. needed the points meanwhile, as the 299pt he earned will come in handy for pushing them up the table before Silvio Herklotz expected GT of the season. Gazelle took advantage of the weak field with a great depth performance to score 226pt as did Tinkoff Team - La Datcha and Pavel Sivakov who's 2nd place contributed to 206pt
Grieg-Maersk and Polar were the only big scorers at Veenendaal - Veenendaal both walking away with over 200pt as Mads Pedersen continued his good form taking the win and specialist Artem Nych got himself on the podium in 2nd place 230 and 210pt respectively for the two teams.
Finally we entered the Ardennes with Amstel Gold Race and back to back wins for World Championship Bronze Medalist Attila Valter scooping the win and Aker - MOT topping the scoring with 287pts. EA Vesuvio came in 2nd in the race with Mohoric and 2nd top scorer at 223pt. Los Pollos Hermanos were an effective 3rd top scorer at 174pt with Sergio Higuita also rounding off the podium
Here is the full April Update:

Looking at the total standings Tinkoff Team - La Datcha climb to the top toppling Rabobank a big move from Team UBS up to 4th place as well. Currently Rabobank still lead the PPRD with King Power and EA Vesuvio also topping 41 PPRD.
At the bottom of the table Grieg-Maersk move out of the drop zone thanks to Pederson strong month but are still in danger on PPRD. Team Puma - SAP are currently in the drop zone but will shoot out of it when Herklotz rides a GT meaning several of those below will start to worry. Surprisingly Xero Racing are also currently down near the bottom with Arreuya at the Veulta to come for there big scoring race there could be some pressure on that come the end of the year.

Thank you for the great write-up, jt!
We tried to score 2026 points for the meme, but came four points short. I blame the kingdom of Lithuania.
In general some decent results though for us, guys like Aular, Higuita and Halvorsen doing at least okay, whereas PT just is too hard for leaders like Lopez Nolasco or Ocampo. But they better be prepared for PCT next season!

I forgot Ronde and Roubaix were in April. That makes things look a little better, as Per's magic gave us enough of a buffer to keep us away from the very bottom this month.
The Giro, on the other hand, was worth that I imagined. I didn't realize that almost every other team had some sort of breakaway success at some point, leaving us scrapping with only minor GC points. Carthy only at 234 points with only one race left is really rough. I always do underestimate the power of stage points in GTs, but unfortunately, there is just too much luck involved in breakaway selection, which is where most of those points come from. Maybe we get more luck without a noteworthy GC guy in the TDF.
Thanks for the update!

Crazy close! Both in terms of the month, but also in general. We had a very good month all things considered, but still made a drastic drop, despite not really losing any leverage. We lost 5 spots in the actual ranking, but are up as High as 4th in the projected ranking after the first GT. We will drop further (in all rankings), but things are still looking very solid.

RVV isn't in April.
Bad month for us which is completely down to the Giro. Siric being our top scorer after a Pogacar GT is just kinda stupid. Gonna be relying on Philipsen going forward because anything uphill just goes to shit.
Thanks for the update.

Why are we not last? Ah, FW isn't there yet, that's why.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Didn't lose the lead by much, but this is it for us as we'll slowly but surely go towards the middle of the table.
Thanks for the update!

This month has "solid but not great" written all over it for Evonik. Hard to pick any race out that was disappointing but then almost all of them could have been a bit better too. VV was the best of the races (despite still giving us the second least points )
We definitely should be higher up the ranking considering our amount of good used race days already...

Okay so far. Mano and Ganna are doing really well in the TT races, the rest probably a bit subpar up to this point, especially Gidich, who got his first big result in FW just after the period considered for this update though. Thanks jt for the update! |

Ouch! And the hope was to have a good GT with Groenewegen in the Giro I definitely fear for what is to come with the Vuelta and the Tour now. We really need a big, big buffer before the Tour, I think, as we go with Valter in the Vuelta.
This was always the risk giving Valter the Vuelta, but I am still somewhat confident we should find enough points to stay safe, eventhough it feels a lot riskier now than before the Giro |

We continue to fall, but have one of the best PPRD still which is promising so as to keep our heads above water.
Dunbar is the duct tape holding us together at this point. Gaviria had a decent Giro on paper and scored around average, but his performance in Qatar still really hurts our point tally. I can’t really remember where his schedule goes from here, but he’s gotta be close to running out of RD’s and unless he goes ballistic his total is pretty bad.
Stüssi is doing exactly what we signed him for, plugging away in races with much better riders and trying to punch above his weight. His Giro was not bad at all and he still has quite a few RD’s left, so long may it continue. Latour is about to properly start his season I think, looking forward to seeing his attacking of style of riding in our colours
Good to see Rabobank continuing their stellar season, although they have been at least temporarily pipped by Oleg
Thanks for the great write up!

After updated #2 we were in deep trouble with a PpRD of 22. Some decent results have lifted us to 30, which is enough to be in the projected 16th spot. Far from safe, but way better already. Let's keep this momentum going.
Many teams still close to each other near the top of the PpRD chart.

Pretty big trouble we are in here, a below-par season so far across the board despite some bright spots, Olivier barely scraping past 200 points and Vermeersch barely past 100 is just inexcusable and really not what we need. Areruya may have to save us, he has obviously made a pretty good start of it in May but agree with the write-up that it's an unwanted amount of pressure that will be on him in the Vuelta. Also not looking forward to the continued rankings decline with a backloaded rest of the year for him and Pidcock (who doesn't have a ton left but hopefully can perform well where he does).
Really thought I'd left the old me behind, but the relegation anxiety is real and I think deserved now, so sorry everyone

It's nice to see us in 4th but this is definitely going to be our peak for the season. It should be a slow grind downhill from here, but I'm hoping we can hang on to stay in the division. Kudus' only other race will be the Dauphine, so we'll need Godoy to do well in the Tour and Vuelta, which is a very difficult ask.
