Tour of the Battenkill (PTHC) - Discussion
Report will be brought to you by kandesbunzler26 during the weekend.
Welcome to the US of A for the PTHC cobbled classic Tour of the Battenkill! The last two winners are back for a duel to reclaim the throne here, but there are always more sharks in the pond looking to win this race for the first time as well. Let's have a look at the profile.
Enough cobbles to make a difference, and several of them on an uphill sector as well. Being okay uphill certainly helps, and that is a factor that we can spot looking at the last two winners. Let's have a look at the best cobblers at the startline tomorrow.
| Nat. | Name | FL | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | | Per David | 79 | 70 | 74 | 75 | 82 | 74 | 74 | | Wisniowski Lukasz | 79 | 70 | 74 | 75 | 82 | 72 | 75 | | Senechal Florian | 75 | 67 | 79 | 74 | 82 | 69 | 74 | | Kamyshev Arman | 76 | 64 | 80 | 74 | 81 | 65 | 59 | | Sulimov Alexander | 73 | 70 | 77 | 71 | 79 | 65 | 71 | | Gaday Lucas Manuel | 71 | 75 | 75 | 72 | 78 | 71 | 73 | | Owen Logan | 73 | 69 | 73 | 71 | 78 | 64 | 71 | | Zubov Matvey | 67 | 62 | 68 | 67 | 78 | 60 | 67 | | Girmay Biniam | 76 | 71 | 74 | 75 | 77 | 76 | 76 | | Ulloa Jose Gerardo | 72 | 70 | 73 | 72 | 77 | 68 | 68 | | Kortsidakis Michail | 77 | 69 | 75 | 75 | 77 | 68 | 72 | | Boros Michael | 73 | 73 | 73 | 69 | 77 | 64 | 66 | | Stavrakakis Georgios | 76 | 68 | 74 | 70 | 77 | 64 | 68 | | Meiler Lukas | 74 | 74 | 72 | 70 | 77 | 63 | 71 | | Taubel Christoph | 72 | 64 | 67 | 71 | 77 | 60 | 62 | | Lampaert Yves | 74 | 65 | 72 | 71 | 77 | 59 | 59 | | Manamalage Nipuna Shira | 81 | 59 | 71 | 64 | 77 | 57 | 56 | | Kuroeda Shiki | 72 | 70 | 76 | 77 | 76 | 76 | 73 | | Benoot Tiesj | 71 | 81 | 75 | 74 | 76 | 69 | 71 |
Allow me to say this is not the strongest startlist at a PTHC cobbled race this season. Last year's winner Per and the winner of the two editions before that, Wisniowski, will start as the big favourites. Their biggest rival should be Senechal, as Tinkoff come here with some great strength in numbers, hoping to keep their title dreams alive.
Already theoretically clearly a step behind the three best cobblers we see Gaday for Zara. The Argentinian clearly the second best puncheur on the list though, let's see if that can help him finish on the podium tomorrow. Other 78 cobblers include other former Strava rider Owen and Kraftwerk's Zubov, but I fear the lack of other skills will cost Zubov tomorrow.
Because of the startlist not being that strong, a larger group of 77 cobblers is dreaming of a top-10 tomorrow. Looking at the puncheur and physical stats, guys like Ulloa, Boros and Kortsidakis are the ones to watch. Guys like Girmay definitely strong as well, but it remains to be seen in what kind of role he rides for Assa, with the same being true for Carlsberg's Meiler as well. One name that definitely deserves a mention as well is Benoot. He's shown he loves races like this in the past, and perhaps the Sony rider can cause a real upset tomorrow as well.
Enjoy the race!

Although our destination for next season is pretty much certain, it would be nice to end on a high with a big performance from Gaday who is certain of capable of fighting in the Top 5.

All eyes on Tinkoff. If they want to overtake Gazelle, this is the best opportunity

Oh dear, those three Tinkoff jerseys in the top five cobblers look pretty concerning to me. And also the fact that there are hardly any 80, 79 and 78 COB rated riders behind to challenge them.
Yes, Senechal and Kamychev might have some trouble with the hills. But to prevent a big Tinkoff score they would need to get beaten by a bunch of 77 cobblers with slightly better puncheur skills. Not sure that is realistic.
Fingers crossed though.

An intra-team battle between Battenkill and Rheden to see where we suck less

Big opportunity for Tinkoff indeed, in a pretty weak field (compared to Rheden at least). Can't see past Per and Wisniowski for the win, though.
Good luck to all, thanks for the preview! Wish you all the best for Ulloa finally getting a really good result, this could be his race

I guess it would have been wise for me to swap Boutopoulos with Summerhill to get a higher chance of a top 10 result here - but we aimed towards the better punchy cobblers here, and the more flat cobblers in Rheden.
Both races have an outside chance of a top 10, but not the most likely outcome. Let's see what we can get out of these races.

Win goal here with a pretty favorable startlist, which naturally means I'm prepared to be disappointed. It's been another fantastic season for Per, so I can't really complain no matter what happens. That said, we have a chance to go 5/5 in goals this year with a win (and enough points—looking at your Meiler), and that would be incredible. Can't be too mad if we lose to Wisniowski or Senechal though. Speaking of the latter, I'm interested to see what Tinkoff are able to do here with their full A-team given the weaker startlist.
Thanks for the preview!

Benoot had an excellent race last time and we're he can at least get close to the same again. The support team isn't very strong, so it'll be all up to him to fend for himself. Maybe MVD can do something.
Thanks for the preview

I guess the top of the PT will breathe a sigh of relief here seeing what actually came from those Tinkoff numbers. 126 points is well below what could have been achieved here. Actually it's below what we achieved here!
This result blows my mind! Kortsidakis in 5th and Boutopoulos in 10th is absolutely amazing. The only thing that sucks is the fact that Kortsidakis is 30, and I didn't start his training sooner. Making him from 74 to 77 over the past 3 seasons have been worth every penny. I wonder if making him 80 COB would have been worth much more - but I really wish I had tried. Boutopoulos is another obvious candidate, but being 29 next season he too can only get to 78 at most.
Stavrakakis in 17th here is another solid result to add depth, and fortunately his 77COB can be heavily improved if I feel like it, as he still have 4 more years worth of training.
Overall three brilliant results for us this morning which explodes my expectation. The three races was expected to score us 195 points which was rather high - in the end we come away with a massive 352 points instead. It was much needed though as we can't expect more than 100 points in october. But promotion is officially secured after september!
Thanks a lot for the reports!

8th for vdP with two others in the top 30 is a pretty solid result given cobbles aren't generally a strong terrain for us - though to be fair, no terrain has been this season
Thanks for the report kb and congrats to Sykkel! |

Benoot did his thing, repeating the podium from last year. Some depth points are also good. We didn't really make up any ground on rivals though.
Congrats to sykkel and thanks for the report kb

Big sigh of relief indeed. I was bracing for the possibility of a 300+ point result by Tinkoff here. Now they gain only 34 points on us in this Battenkill/Rheden split.
The Tinkoff-favoured cobbles are behind us and we return to terrain that suits us better. It all comes down to Japan and Lombardy. On paper we should be able to outscore them there. But we still need to deliver.
Congrats Sykkel!

Well, looks like Per didn't have that extra gear today unfortunately, and got cooked by Wisniowski when it mattered. It's disappointing only insofar as this was our win goal and we had a legitimate shot to take it. Otherwise, it's a phenomenal race for us! Meiler finally woke up with an incredible ride to snag the podium here on a lesser day for Per. Feels like he's had an underwhelming year overall for his ability, but in this weaker startlist he was able to properly shine and show off his versatility. Add Resell in 13th and the other depth points, and we end up scoring about 250 here—which about what we reasonable could have expected from a win. So, we miss our win goal, but this keeps our top 10 goal alive (at least for now, as the hills left do not suit us).
Congrats to Sykkel and thanks for the report!

Hehe, 5 x 2pts for minor placements. I guess 10 points was the best we could hope for in such a race.
Congrats SykkelFreak and thank you KandesBunzler for the quality report! |
