Tour of Slovenia
This is the 16th year in which Tour of Slovenia has been part of the MGUCI Calendar and the 5th as part of the PTHC category of races. The current format of the race suits mostly riders with really strong TT skills and decent hill stats and last year was no exception with Tom Wirtgen defending his title, snatching the win from Mads Würtz with Egan Bernal in third. Well, both Wirtgen and Würtz will renew their duel from last year with the Luxembourger looking for the illusive 3-in-a-row, but Polar chose to not race Bernal for the entire month of July, meaning that we won't see him here. 2021 winner Filippo Ganna (who finished 4th last year) is also not racing this month either, but the 5th placed from 2023 Tao Geoghegan Hart will.
The profile is the same as last year - the race will start from Maribor, going southwest towards Celje. Then, a 31 km TTT in Celje will offer first glimpse of who will be the GC contenders. The third stage will be the first of the two stages with an uphill finish with the riders reaching the nation's capital of Ljubljana. The next stage will finish in Predmeja and the final test is a 53 km ITT near Trebnje. But let's see who are the favourites according to the panel.
Rider | MT | HI | TT | RS | AC | Wirtgen | 78 | 75 | 84 | 75 | 72 | Würtz | 67 | 71 | 83 | 78 | 70 | Dunbar | 77 | 76 | 82 | 77 | 68 | Mano | 72 | 75 | 80 | 73 | 66 | Oliveira | 70 | 72 | 79 | 72 | 72 | Geoghegan Hart | 79 | 74 | 78 | 74 | 69 | Powless | 78 | 72 | 78 | 74 | 71 | Munton | 74 | 73 | 78 | 74 | 64 | Ioannidis | 75 | 73 | 78 | 74 | 70 | Kiriakidis | 74 | 73 | 78 | 73 | 71 | Christapopoulos | 62 | 73 | 78 | 72 | 69 | Ferreyra | 72 | 72 | 78 | 74 | 69 | Brunel | 67 | 71 | 78 | 78 | 65 | Kämna | 77 | 71 | 78 | 73 | 67 | Conci | 77 | 74 | 78 | 75 | 68 | Cosnefroy | 68 | 71 | 78 | 81 | 69 | Herregodts | 75 | 75 | 77 | 78 | 70 | Kung | 70 | 73 | 77 | 72 | 71 | McNulty | 81 | 74 | 77 | 77 | 68 | Van Baarle | 68 | 72 | 77 | 76 | 70 |
No surprises here - Wirtgen and Würtz are once again the two top favourites with Wirtgen looking for his third straight win. Compared to Würtz, he has superior climbing skills which can prove decisive in the 3rd and 4th stages. Dunbar is ranked third here, but last year he finished 6th, 1'12 behind Wirtgen. With Ganna and Bernal not here, the Irishman will hope to do better as is Geoghegan Hart. Mano finished 8th in 2022, but didn't race last year and will hope to improve as well. Oliveira was 5th in 2022, but was all the way down in 22nd last year, but his skillset is still considered strong enough for the panel to place him in the Top 5.
The following list of riders are considered pure TT'ers, but in case the gaps aren't that big by the time of the ITT, could be considered dark horses with Zmorka as the leading candidate.
Rider | MT | HI | TT | RS | AC | Zmorka | 61 | 66 | 82 | 75 | 70 | Mullen | 62 | 70 | 81 | 74 | 70 | Durbridge | 57 | 66 | 80 | 72 | 62 | Lammertink | 64 | 69 | 80 | 76 | 68 | Beniusis | 69 | 60 | 80 | 73 | 67 | Bjerg | 64 | 68 | 80 | 77 | 70 | Sütterlin | 59 | 65 | 80 | 77 | 60 | Norsgaard | 62 | 65 | 79 | 75 | 66 | Kmieliauskas | 68 | 69 | 79 | 70 | 69 | Tanfield | 59 | 63 | 79 | 75 | 72 | Rekita | 58 | 63 | 79 | 73 | 70 | Vlatos | 50 | 64 | 79 | 68 | 63 | Haugard | 57 | 60 | 79 | 77 | 67 | Paillot | 69 | 70 | 79 | 73 | 63 | Zakarin | 66 | 66 | 79 | 70 | 70 |
Stages 3 and 4 are hilly stages, which can give riders with weak TT a chance to at least win a stage or two:
Rider | MT | HI | TT | RS | AC | Skujins | 69 | 82 | 58 | 76 | 75 | Gesbert | 74 | 80 | 64 | 78 | 73 | Kanerva | 64 | 79 | 70 | 69 | 76 | Kwiatkowski | 76 | 79 | 68 | 73 | 72 | Chaves | 74 | 77 | 66 | 70 | 69 | Mayer | 69 | 77 | 70 | 72 | 77 | Dunbar | 77 | 76 | 82 | 77 | 68 | Sepulveda | 74 | 76 | 74 | 71 | 71 | Villella | 64 | 76 | 60 | 72 | 78 | Le Court | 70 | 76 | 60 | 70 | 66 |
Stage 2 is a TTT and will require teamwork, meaning that for a GC win a strong TTT train is a must. Here's how the the trains are set up:
Team | Top 8 | Top 5 | Top 3 | EA Vesuvio | 80.3 (1) | 80.3 (1) | 80.3 (1) | Oxxo - Frisby | 80.3 (1) | 80.3 (1) | 80.3 (2) | Grieg-Maersk | 79.3 (3) | 79.3 (4) | 79.3 (3) | Tinkoff Team - La Datcha | 79 (4) | 79 (3) | 79 (14) | Cedevita | 78.7 (5) | 78.7 (5) | 78.7 (5) | Jura GIANTS | 78.3 (6) | 78.3 (5) | 78.3 (9) | King Power | 78.3 (6) | 78.3 (5) | 78.3 (3) | cycleYorkshire | 78 (8) | 78 (13) | 78 (14) | DK Zalgiris | 78 (8) | 78 (14) | 78 (18) | ELCO - ABEA | 78 (8) | 78 (8) | 78 (6) | Indosat Ooredoo | 77.7 (11) | 77.7 (14) | 77.7 (11) | Minions | 77.7 (11) | 77.7 (11) | 77.7 (12) | Team UBS | 77.7 (11) | 77.7 (9) | 77.7 (8) | Benetton Bimex Cycling | 77.3 (14) | 77.3 (14) | 77.3 (16) | JEWA TIROL | 77.3 (14) | 77.3 (18) | 77.3 (20) | Team Puma - SAP | 77.3 (14) | 77.3 (11) | 77.3 (10) | ZARA - Irizar | 77.3 (14) | 77.3 (9) | 77.3 (7) | Lidl Cycling | 77 (18) | 77 (14) | 77 (17) | Polar | 76.7 (19) | 76.7 (22) | 76.7 (22) | Podium Ambition | 76.3 (20) | 76.3 (21) | 76.3 (21) | Tryg - Eni | 76.3 (20) | 76.3 (20) | 76.3 (19) | ISA - Hexacta | 76 (22) | 76 (18) | 76 (13) | Llapi-Vita | 68.7 (23) | 68.7 (23) | 68.7 (23) | Assa Abloy | 67.7 (24) | 67.7 (24) | 67.7 (24) |
Obiously, the teams with GC contenders have sent their strongest TT riders. 10 teams are within 2.3 (Top 8) of each other. Whoever wins this TTT stage, will have its top GC contender on pole position.
And last, but not least, there's the opening stage which has a flat finish. Teams with no GC aspirations have surely sent a rider to at least go for a stage win in the sprint stage:
Rider | FL | SP | AC | RS | Abdul Halil | 70 | 81 | 79 | 68 | Banaszek | 74 | 79 | 81 | 73 | Steimle | 74 | 78 | 80 | 69 | Harrison | 72 | 78 | 81 | 70 | Szarka | 77 | 78 | 78 | 73 | Larsen | 77 | 77 | 76 | 73 | Dekker | 77 | 77 | 76 | 77 | Garcia Cortina | 76 | 77 | 76 | 72 | Silvestre | 75 | 77 | 76 | 66 | Rickaert | 78 | 75 | 73 | 75 |
And here is the startlist:

Wirtgen of course the big favourite. We have to hope for relatively non-selective hilly stages and that Würtz has a lot left in the tank for the final stage. Could be anything from a podium to 14th place, so let's hope for the best. Thanks for the preview, Ivan!

At PCT Level we have a pretty strong TTT setup, but we are out of our League here.
All We Can do is hope We Can limit the losses, and then for a couple of hilly stages in our favor before the long ITT.
Both Kiriakidis and Ioannidis on paper have a shot at a top 10, but could just as Well finish 30th or so. We don’t have any top riders

Not sure what to expect here. The TTT team is not considered a favorite, and Cattaneo will not make it over the hills. Also no sprinter, so the options for success are limited.

A race I really like in terms of profile, but sadly don't bring a top contender once again (angry looks at Xero ^^). Will see how hard the hills really are this year; Küng did a decent job last year, and hopefully Darbellay can hold on even better; he should if climbing matters a little, otherwise he'll be as useless as in all the other similar races he's already done.
TTT should be decent, otherwise Szarka gets his 2nd chance of the year to shine. Giro form would be much appreciated.
Thanks for the preview, good luck to all.

Not much to say about stage 1. Wasn't expecting there to be though.
It's going to be very very interesting to see how that stage 2 will fare. I'm not entirely sure I know how the rankings in the preview are setup though.
Apparently we have 78 in ranking regardles of having 3, 5 or 8 riders. In reality it should be:
3 - 78,0
5 - 77,2
8 - 75,8
It seems like every team have gotten the same numbers (top 3), so suspect it is a copy/paste mistake somewhere. Don't know if the numbers next to refers to a correct ranking order though.

Good to see Würtz alert and near the front at the end. The most important thing of course to get through without any time loss. Thanks for the report and congrats to ISA on the stage win!

Hoped for better, but not awful. Wirtgen surely in pole position now, can't really see him losing from here (even though he lost one second because of stupid time taking in TTs).

Decent TTT I think, a shame we lose second place on the stage by milliseconds. Very nice for Galvan Ramirez to ride in white for a day. The valuable experience he gained at Philips/Sony showing here.
Let's see if the AI tries to keep Zmorka up front now.

Seems impossible for my team to perform according to its stats. Always finishing below teams with lower TT totals.

We are in an okayish position after the TT. I hope McNulty, Mano and the others can make something of it now. |

Sorry for the delayed commenting. Wirtgen obviously the one to beat here, and nobody will be able to do that you’d think. Dunbar needs to have a good TTT performance to clinch a spot on the podium. The TTT has been surprisingly good this season, so fingers crossed we can keep it going. congrats on ISA on the first stage win and thank you for the report

Decent TTT all things considered. Couldn’t hope for much more with the team we have had here. Hope Powless manages to stay on the front and make up some places. Thanks for the report and congrats to the winner.

A bit lower than we would have liked to see, but the PT teams are just really TTT heavy these years.
It’s difficult to see us getting anything useful from this race. Our riders are just too mediocre at this Level.
