Intense fight for the red jersey. It was fun to follow.
I'm quite happy with Chaiyasombat's exploits from the breaks. Unfortunately the KoM trophy was out of reach for him in the end but he's at least rewarded with the white jersey. It's a shame there were not really breaks fighting for stage wins, but I guess that's also due to the close fight for the GC win. |

Thrilling fight for the red jersey in the end. I like that you could really see the effect of recovery in the final week for Bernal and Sivakov. Bernal is isn't the climber that Morton is (yet), but he always had just a little bit more left in the tank as the race went on to stay with him and limit losses. Recovery is a stat I've underrated for a long time (not racing GT's much until last year), but it definitely matters now.
For us, Galta was steadfast, gets another stage top 5, and solidifies his 5th overall. Awesome performance from him. Gregaard and Eg were well positioned and fared well in the end too to move up to 19th and 26th. Best outcome with could hope for besides a lucky breakaway or something. Very satisfied.

Solid 6th GC performance by Wellens throughout the race.
Basically similar performance as in the Giro without that one bad day there.
Was hoping to be closer to 4th but Sivakov is fair enough to be there even after the flat stage time loss and Galta was just stronger.
Stage wise unfortunately not much to take from this race as the backup team was not really active except for 1-2 stages and Ide Schelling is no Cras and struggled a lot more. In the end even missing the top30 closely and couldn`t profit from break performance as other similar riders.
The GC fight was really thrilling in the end, Bernal just takes it due to the TT kilometers but Morton might have scored more with all the stage dominance.
Dombrowski a bit weaker than expected but at least on the podium.
Thanks for the reports! |

Aular with a similar move to the first mountain stage, very ambitious with a rather early attack, but in the end sitting down and just keeping a high/constant pace would probably have been smarter. Once again solid ride of course by Choi, and no shame in losing the battle of the latino teams to Zara
And Halvorsen, well, yet another 14th place to add to his tally, yet again after being in quite a perfect position with +- 2 km to go, to then just...drop back entirely and start the sprint from 20th position. Really sucks that we seem to have struck with the fourth sprinter curse quite often/mostly in this GT. Having won a stage and with so many (flat) sprints it's crazy how he's not even able to get a top-10 in the green classification. Together with Eastman's very subpar Giro we can't really say we've been too lucky in the GT's so far. Whereas we could have been in an amazing position ranking-wise, the next months will still be very tough, with a weak line-up in the TdF as well.
Except for the Choi - Aular battle it's nice to see the less interesting battle between Morton and Bernal also had a nice final
Thank you kb for 21 fantastic reports once again!

Thank you for stellar reporting all the way, kb!
Donovan on final leadout duties in a race where we also have Veyhe, Räim and Santos. You've got to give it to the AI
All in all a disappointing Vuelta for Groenewegen. Had both hoped and kind of also expected at least a stage win, even with other sprints being a miss, but it wasn't meant to be. It also makes this far from the big scoring Grand Tour I hoped for when planning the season, which makes me somewhat nervous, but also weirdly excited, to see where we will be after the Tour and the GT racing is done.
Novak fought bravely in the mountains. Happy he played his card to secure the KoM jersey. Such racing was the reason we decided to go for him in the transfer season, and he definitely delivered. Not being rewarded with fighting for a stage win or several stage wins on his many breakaway attempts is kind of down to luck, I guess. And seeing the epic battle we had between Bernal and Morton, it was also cool to see them fight it out for the many mountain stages. As said after stage 20, congratulations to both! |

Lol @ Trondsen finally deciding to sprint. I guess that 83 rec is good for something in the end.
Not a great race for us, but with limited chances for the breakaways, that's kind of how it is. But happy with the performance from Vingegaard at least.
Congrats to all who did well and thanks for all the reports!

The Vuelta lacked the huge moments of the Giro for us, but it was still a very good race for us overall. We scored solid points thanks to Galta, accomplished our top 10 goal easily, and should at least keep pace in the standings with most teams.
Galta was really strong from the beginning and just kept it up. He was actually very similar to his Giro last year, which scared me a bit. I worried that breakaways would surge above him (to pay me back for Carthy), but luckily the GC battle at the very top prevented that. He ends up in 5th place with a lot of stage results around that region. He only lost to riders better than him and beat everyone else similar or worse than him. Can't complain about that kind of steadfast performance.
Depth was also good. Gregaard sneaking his way into 19th and Eg in 26th are nice ways to score a few extra points. Those two in particular helped us out a lot last year with those bonus GC points, and that was the case again here. I guess one downside is they never got in breakaways (did we have a single Carlsberg breakaway this race??), but the GC battle kept breakaways from winning much of anything, so that ended up being good timing.
The only thing that sucked for us was AKA. He was abysmal in his last maxed GT, which sucks from both a points perspective and a storyline perspective. We knew coming in that the startlist would be difficult given the amount of sprint stages, but AKA usually can pull out a result or two in crowded fields, and some of the mid-race flat days were grueling enough that his flat and resistance should have helped. Instead, he ended up outside the top 15 more than inside the top 10, with only the one third place early and the sixth place at the end here. Just wasn't trying at all while guys like Wouters with 77 sprint got more top 10's. It happens, and there were plenty of other sprinters who fared poorly too, but it's a little sad to see him go out like that after so many years leading us.
Congrats to Polar for a phenomenal first GT win for Bernal, and thanks to kb for the thrilling and amazing written reports throughout!

Would have been nice to at least have a redemption podium there, but this race really was cursed for us.
That stage 20 finale would have been even more amazing if there would have been less than 8 seconds between the two top uns. Fantastic finale for a great battle. The first of what could be many GTs for Bernal. Hopefully Morton will get a chance to win one as well.
Thanks for the reports and congrats beagle!

Thanks for the fantastic coverage again!
I really enjoyed seeing how my team did even if we didnt get particularly lucky with breaks. But having all of Foss/Eenkhoorn/Blums as top 16 GC finishers is awesome and we had Dversnes in the breaks and Sureda in sprints to make almost every stage somewhat interesting to us.
Overall, this might have lacked the great highlight but was a very solid race with the only downside being the AIs handling of Plapp's fight for the U25 competition.
Congrats beagle, great to see that Bernal is already a beast and doesnt require any additional training at all!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

First of all, thanks to KB for the great coverage!
We were competitive in all stages, which is definitely a success. Wouters overperformed right off the bat, which leaded to five top-10 places. Although I would have traded these five for one stage victory
The other stages we relied on the trio Quintana, Min and Bouchard for breakaway opportunities. They all did their share of attacking, so kudos to them. I had a small hope that Quintana could go for KOM at some point, but that turned out differently.
Congrats to beagle with the victory!
Happy to be part of this GT, and we hope we can compete in another next season!

Thank you for fantastic coverage of the thrilling race. At the beginning I expected comfortable win for Morton and fight between Bernal and Dombrowski for remaining podium places, with Sivakov waiting for his opportunity to shuffle cards to his own advantage. Oh man, I was wrong! Bernal has been phenomenal all 3 weeks. As expected he took red jersey after stage 8 (not winning long ITT was only light disappointment in race), then resisted to brutal Morton´s offensive as long as possible. I´m happy to see physical attributes played an important role in final week, compensating handicap in MO skill. Bernal performed at his very best in all 3 crucial stages 18-20 which eventually lead to overall win. Huge boost of morale for my team.
Congrats to ryant, I´m sure he is disappointed right now, but 6 stage wins is really something! And also big congrats to Roman. I really hope Gaviria here and Kudus in TdF will collect enough of points to avoid relegation.
Thanks for all congratulations
Congrats beagle, great to see that Bernal is already a beast and doesnt require any additional training at all!

What a fantastic fight for the overall win, congrats beagle and huge thanks for reports!
Have to be really satisfied with this race, another solid 2nd place in the final stage from Gaviria, points jersey and points for wearing the red jersey. May still have chance to not relegate with another great result in TdF.

Oh boy, so close yet so far ????
It's painful to lose out like that but it something we have to take, we could see it coming particularly in the final stretch where Bernal only seemed to get stronger so it's cool to see that recovery does indeed work as intended. Things weren't made much better since we missed out on the KOM as well but we can't have everything.
In terms of the race overall I'm sure it was very successful points wise and we won't be looking over our shoulders looking at relegation I feel but again, this was a win goal this year and probably was the slight window of opportunity Morton had at winning a GT and we failed so that can't be good maybe Bernal could have waited another year!
The six? Stage wins do feel great though (I thought it was 5) so it's not as bad a Tour as this message made out.
Thanks for the reports KB and congrats to Beagle for the win overall, Bernal is a beast!

Mediocre is probably the correct word to describe Dombrowski's Vuelta. It was not a failure, because he did win a stage and he did hold on to the lowest acceptable GC position in third.
But most of the mountain stages his performance compared to Morton and Bernal was straight up disappointing if you look at their stats. At some point I was even getting Madrazo vibes again.
But if I switch to a neutral spectator point of view for a second, the fight for the GC win was awesome. Congratulations on getting it beagle! Bernal had to be super clever to beat a very strong Morton. Well done.
Also shout out to Louis Vervaeke for snagging 23d in GC, that's a good result for him.
Thanks for the solid reports!

Also thanks from me for the outstanding reports the last three weeks. A stage win and the white jersey is an acceptable outcome from the race even though I hoped Chaiyasombat could channel his inner Dion Smith a bit more. Also Hsu's sprinting form deteriorating so much in the second half of the race is not what I hoped for.
The close fight for the win was great to follow. It would have been nice for Morton to win with my loanee Gloag supporting him, but it's also great to see someone from the newer generation of stage racers getting his first GT win. Congrats! |
