Welcome to the Czech Republic for the 12th edition of Praha-Karlovy Vary-Praha. After three one day editions, this is known as a stage race with high TT focus.
Taylor Phinney won here six (!) times in a row from 2016 to 2021. Last year it was Mads Würtz who won before Tom Wirtgen and Luke Durbridge. Würtz (Grieg-Maersk) and Wirtgen (EA Vesuvio) are again topping the favourite list for this year's edition. They get the company of Marlen Zmorka (Oxxo-Frisby), winner in 2022.
The big three were also present in the Tour of Tasmania. Zmorka won, Wirtgen and Würtz finishing 3rd and 4th. Ryan Mullen (Polar) finished second in that TT and is considered an outsider for GC victory. Wirtgen won the closing TT in Ukraine, beating Würtz along the way while Würtz won the Tirreno-Adriatico TT.
Then there are a bigger group of outsiders who are looking to score a top-5 or top-10. We start with Steven Lammertink (Cedevita). He was seventh last year. The Dutchman finished 12th and 8th in the TT's of Tasmania and Ukraine respectively. Mario Gonzalez Salas (Fastned) finished 5th in Tasmania TT and will be happy to replicate this performance. Yuttana Mano (King Power) is another familiar face on the startlist, finishing 6th last year. The guy from Thailand warmed up with a 5th place in Ukraine and 9th in Tasmania.
Jasha Sütterlin (Oxxo-Frisby) is another favourite for Nemolito. The German was 4th in 2022 and 3rd in 2021. Especially the 2022 edition was memorable for Los Pollos Hermanos: finishing 1st, 3th and 4th with only Phinney in between. Egan Bernal is the second option for Polar next to Mullen. He finished 6th in this year's Ukraine TT. Last but not least there is Filippo Ganna (Xero Racing), who made an offseason transfer from Team Puma-SAP. He finished 5th in 2023 and was 4th in Ukraine this year. His Tasmania's TT was way below par (17th).
For the prologue everybody is looking to Soren Kragh Andersen (Aker-MOT). After winning a boatload of prologues last season, he continued winning this season in every prologue possible: Qatar, Portugal and Paris-Nice. The bookmakers also include Chung Wing Leung (2nd in Qatar and 3rd in Paris-Nice), Filippo Ganna (3th in Qatar) and Gabriel Chavanne (2nd in Paris-Nice, 3th in Portugal and 4th in Qatar) on the favourite list.
For the two flat stages there will be fierce competition between Cullaigh, Manninen (podium in Qatar and Paris-Nice stages), Van Poppel (2nd in a Paris-Nice stage), Samolenkov (podium in a Qatar stage), Philipsen (podium in a Qatar stage and 4th in a Tirreno stage), Abdul Halil (wins in Tasmania and Tirreno), Kemboi (podium in a Tasmania stage), Groves (Ronde van Nederland GC), Steimle (3 second places in Paris-Nice stages) and Jakobsen (2nd in a Qatar stage) among others.

2nd places are our thing, so I'm guessing another close second here? Podium is the goal. Would be great to defend the victory, but it will obviously be tough to beat Wirtgen. But we will have to try, of course.
Thanks for the preview, Laurens. Should be a good race this.

The prologue must be our main goal here, but I guess the range of expected outcomes is somewhere from 1st to 6th, so the total points can be good or very bad.
Rekita could well be the worst of the 79+ TTers due to his relatively weak PRL, so we'll take any Top 20. Brunel and Bissegger should end up somewhere in the Top 50 as well, barring any random splits like last year.
And then, there's Groves who could also get any result from two stage wins to no Top 10. Something in between would be fine (although I'd take the two wins, too ).
Guess we should see a new GC winner this year after Wirtgen's monster training. And it should be interesting to see whether Zmorka's +3 PRL advantage can make up for -1 TT vs. Würtz, but any other rider on the podium would be a surprise.
Thanks for the preview, good luck to all!

Big race for both our big money signings, the Ganninen duo have both really disappointed so far and them turning things around is crucial to the rest of the season. Even so, I'm still just very excited to have both of them and so it's pure optimism for this race - let's put the first few races behind us and see what we can do here!

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Thank you for the preview, Laurens!
Fingers crossed Kragh can keep his prologue run going. It’s very clear it’s the prologue we are here for. Any other result will be a bonus
Will be cool to see trained Wirtgen and Würtz have a go at each other here, looking forward to the reports, UU! |

Really miss this race for some reason I can't really put my finger on. Obviously having had riders like Coppel, Vlatos, Tzortzakis and Coquard have made for some solid results, but other than that the racing here is often pretty dull...
Will be interesting to see if there's a new Sherif in town. I guess there should be

Thank you for the great preview, Laurens.
We definitely won't have the same performance as we did here last time, but we do need a top-3 + 10 and 15 to save our month a little bit, at it's the only real scoring possibility for us.
Good luck to all.

We love Kragh! Thank you, both bbl and knockout.
Just brilliant to get what we hope for, and admittedly now more and more expect to, with that stage win in prologues. Anything from here will be a bonus! |

Thank you for the nice prologue report to Ulrich, and congratulations ember.
A second place is a great start to the race for Zmorka. Sütterlin also with a top-10 is nice. Vlatos not that top-15 yet, but with only a second or two below his competitors, nothing is lost. Decent start from Erdenebat as well Not the best start for Ocampo in the battle for white, but good to see we're leading the teams classification for now.

Obviously a very disappointing result by Chavanne. He still hasn't got that one great day - like Zmorka or Ganna had - putting him above the other 82 PRL riders. Moreover, he was unlucky to get ranked behind all of his rivals, and even randomly losing out to Oliveira who must have had amazing material. Well, he has reached his expected points total for the year already, but getting 4 points instead of potentially 50-60 (with a stage win and leading points) is massive. So we need Groves and the TTers to deliver then... Not looking too bad for Rekita, Brunel and Bissegger, whereas Küng and Vernon (great to have white for a day, btw!) will have to fight hard for a Top 50. And obviously we'll need to avoid stupid gaps on the flat stages.
Congrats to Aker, it's about time SKA gets a rival. Pretty boring stuff these prologues lately ^^
Thanks for the report.

Not an ideal start to the race with Leung only 5th in the prologue. Kragh doing his thing again, congrats ember. I hope just once he'll have a bad day in a prologue so Leung can have a chance to shine.
I'm a bit confused about Sanikwathi being our captain according to the startlist. I hope it doesn't mean Mano will be badly positioned and possibly caught out by a split in the flat stages.

Hopefully I finally get a good race from Lammertink and don't lose any chance of depth scoring to a random split.
Thanks for the preview and for the reports

Oliveira always managing to outdo his 79TT, I hope for the same in the longer TT for sure as well. Fingers crossed for Cullaigh as well
