Macskako Kerekparverseny Discussions
Imladrik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Profiles/mg_kerekparverseny.jpg

The PT peloton will be in Hungary, for the Macskako Kerekparverseny. The race begins in Bodajk, 64 km to the West of Budapest and 20 km to the North of Székesfehérvár – an important medieval city of the country. The riders will go North-West to Pannohalma, known for it’s 10th century abbey, where was written the oldest know text in Hungarian. The nearby city of Györ hosts one of the best women handball team of the world.

But let’s go back to cycling! The race has been in the MGUCI calendar since 2018, with the same route. Originally a C1 race, it was ridden in as a PTHC race last year, and was promoted in PT for this season.
We’re in Hungary, but the route would not be strange in Belgium! Indeed we have 11 paved sector, the last one being on the finish line. But not only this, as we also have hills, and obviously there are cobblestones in the hills. In fact, after a quite forgiving first third of the race, the riders will enter a circuit mixing hills and cobblestones. But the circuit isn’t always the same, and they will all have to stay strong for the uphill finish, after 168,7 km of a difficult race.

With a route like this, the race should go to a mixture of cobbler and puncher. So let’s see who’s come to Hungary this year.

The favorites

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Edward Theuns747673807776

The main favorite from this list should be last year winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Gerts, who seems to be tailord made for this race. He’s one of the best cobblers to be here, and among them, is the best in the hills, and with good back-up skills. The Dutchman should once again bring the victory to Husky Chocolate, moreover as he comes in Hungary with a strong team.
Behind him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill won the race back in 2019 for Andorra Cycling Project, as a C1 race at the time, and was 3rd last year. He comes back in Hungary for cycleYorkshire a bit older, but probably with high ambitions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski (2nd last year) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Theuns (19e), less easy in the hills but with a great acceleration, are also serious contenders if the race is not hard enough, the first also being the best cobbler here.

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz is not the best in this list by any means, his teammates could put him in a good position to grab a win.

The outsiders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Mike Teunissen677773816769

This list contains the other great cobblers, but who are maybe less good on a uphill finish. Some already had great success this season, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Senechal in the Strada Appia Antica and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen in Milano – San-Remo. The former could have to share the leadership with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev, though he’s got a less good acceleration, while Grieg-Maersk comes with a strong team of cobblers, most of them being quite decent in the hills.

Time to shine for the cobblers in this usually selective race, and we all hope we’ll have a great time tomorrow. The riders probably won’t have that.

Missing the favourites list is a worrying sign for us, but the quality of the startlist is indeed outstsnding. In any case we will be hoping for a Debesay miracle here.

PTHC has some tough fields. I guess it can't go worse than Franceville, but we obviously need it to be a lot better than that. Depth is important too on this points scale. Hopefully the hills matter and we make every split.

Thanks for the preview!

Just like every cobbles race, huge expectations. Wisniowski's start to the season has been kind of poor, and this will be a good place to turn it around. A win will always be hoped for as he enters almost every cobbles race as the slight favourite, but we will also be happy with a podium here, after he couldn't make it in Franceville.

Sorry to say, but you won't be scoring a single point in this race Pfft (It was PTHC last year, but is PT this time)

Looking forward to the report, should be some nice carnage if raced similarly to last year Grin

Last year was pretty bad (Senechal 12th), fingers crossed for a better result.

This will be a good test for Van Hooydonck. Hopefully he can continue his run from last year to reach a top5-10 in most of the cobbles.

As I had no money to train him, he went down the ladder a bit in the classics but still should be a regular performer.

So far it has been a pauver cobbled season for us, despite having a significantly stronger setup than last season. If I can have a rider in top 50 this time I guess I'll have to be content with that.

Definitely not Zepuntke's favourite kind of cobbled race. A top-10, like in Appia Antica, would be absolutely massive. Thanks for a nice preview again, Imladrik. Good luck to all.

Haha that makes a lot more sense with the lack of PCT teams.

In that case, let's just have some fun! Smile

I want to be mean but not too mean here. Can anyone help?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Again not a single rider in top 50. I don’t quite get it. Karatzios was usually between 20-40 last season even winning a cobbled race. Now he’s nowhere. Kortsidakis etc. too nowhere.

A wildcard victory may not be worth anything in points, but it should be worth a lot for team morale. Trentin put in the ride of the year here, attacking at the perfect time and somehow overpowering Wisniowski in the final stretch. Every time I expected him to crack, he kicked it into another gear. Those are the types of races you remember, especially when it was far from guaranteed Trentin would even be a Carlsberg rider this year following decline.

Do I wish we could get something out of this stunning PT victory besides the joy of seeing our rider's arms raised? Well, yeah. But it still means a ton to our team to have a PT cobbled classic victory in the record books. We've always framed ourselves as being a cobbles oriented team, and we've languished for years failing those goals in CT and PCT. So, just like Guldhammer's Giro top 5 was meaningful without rankings implications, this victory means a lot to our team's journey as well. Smile

I also loved Guldhammer surviving as long as he did in the breakaway. He's had some really success in his cobbles wildcard appearances so far this year. Hopefully that translates to races where points are actually at stake. Wink

Thanks you so much for the phenomenal report Imladrik! Really well covered and written.

That was an absolutely terrible result from Gerts. And in a race where we had a win goal.

Something to celebrate! Grin Happy to see Wisniowski claim 2nd place here. Very surprised to see him outclassed by Trentin, but very good to get his timing right and thus attack away from the others. Congratulations on the win, bbl!

It was also nice to see Anderberg next to Wisniowski in the favourites group with around 20 kilometers left. Made me hopeful of a strong domestique result, but I definitely think they made the right call with Anderberg sacrificing himself protecting/doing work for Wisniowski, making the podium possible for Wisniowski Smile

Very happy with the result. Polanc with a strong showing in one of the classics that suit him best and Kulppi adds some nice extra depth scoring. Fitting that he does so in a race with a strong Carlsberg performance (congrats bbl!) Grin
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Love to see Los Pollos taking on their chasing duties, and love it even more to see Zepuntke improving on his result from Appia Antica, finishing ninth in another race not perfectly suited for him. Ulloa in 31st might be the best result of his career so far, wonderful.

Thanks for a great report, Imladrik, and congratulations to bbl for an amazing win and virtually scoring a lot of points Grin
