World Championships 2021 Route Vote
AbhishekLFC
Slightly modified last season's post.

With the end of the season rapidly approaching, it's time to select a route for the season's grand finale, the World Championships.

History:
2020: Hill
2019: Cobbled Mountain
2018: Flat
2017: Hill
2016: Cobbles
2015: Mountain
2014: Flat
2013: Hill
2012: Cobbles
2011: Hill
2010: Mountain
2009: Hill (Flat finish)
2008: Hill

As hills won last season, it will not be one of the choices this time. Please vote for your choice from the others.

Vote on exact location/route will follow once there is a clear winner here. Please nominate suggestions for routes in this thread.

Generally the ITT and TTT routes will match the RR course.

Deadline: 7th May, 23:59:59 PM, Daily Time

Opted for the flat route as we have had both hills, cobbles and mountains in the meantime. Also, only 2 flat routes in the history of the Man-Game is pretty low and by picking flat it would level out with cobbles and mountains.

Flat for me as well. A long, zapping route with some minor hills would probably be my favourite.

Went flat as well, despite my slight hesitations due to the sprint AI and the thought of, like, World Champion Marco Haller (no offense to Marco Haller Pfft ). But I think there are enough great sprinters that we will have a worthy winner.

I agree with tastasol that some minor difficulties would be good. I also wanted to ask, does the route have to have laps? Or can it be one long course as well?

It's already a long time since we had a true mountain WC back in 2015 when Emanuele Sella won a glorious silver medal.

Mountains, proper normal mountains! It's been too long since one, and i would love to see the Worlds head back to the Americas. Tons of great high Colombian options we could think about, or go hunting for some of the lesser known USA climbs.

For the love of god - DO NOT DO A SPRINT RACE!!!!!
Maybe in another year on the next version of PCM we move to we can do a Sprint Course.
Now if Flat means an MSR or Flat rated Strade Bianche type race with significant obstacles i could back it. But would still rather be in the mountains.

Also, the 2019 Cobble Mountain was in Bulgaria , not Hungary . With that being the culmination of literally years of work building the nation as relevant in the MG please respect it properly!

Copied it over from last year's thread. Such a shame it was missed then

While a proper mountain race hasn't been ridden for a while, I think it bears mentioning that the two guys who would be the runaway favorites on such a course, Herklotz and Lecuisinier, were already 1-2 last year (with Phinney in 4th). I'm not saying we need to choose our route to specifically exclude certain contenders, and maybe it's unfair that other climbers suffer from their dominance in this case. But if the goal of changing route types is to not have repeat winners, it's something to keep in mind.

I tend to agree with cunego. I was very surprised to see the top climbers not winning the 2019 edition back then, but they were definately still up there (most of them) with Herklotz, Pluchkin, Gesink and Spilak taking 4-7. Last season it was pretty much a climbers route. Only Kinoshita in the top 10 (5th) had below 78 MO. If we had selected a more puncheur friendly route when we actually picked hills, I would be fine with picking mountains - but I don't think we should repeat the top 10 from last season (which would be very likely with minor changes).

Then I'd rather have a cobbled race.

I prefer flat - but obviously not so flat that a sprint finish is a dead given. We could look through the one day races that gave the most inspiring racing and try to replicate that to some degree, rather than just a flat flat flat stage.

If the problem against mountains is last years Hills were too tough, then we should go Hills again on much less sapping route (although i don't see the major issue with different riders winning again on a different route, but whatever).
If this is such a serious concern the we should probably have a new vote for: Flat, Hilly-Flat, and Cobbles

Hilly-Flat i think the London 2012 route works well. Not too tough but can shed riders and isn't a guaranteed sprinte. Flat rated Strade Bianche as i said can fill in the mixed gap with not much change of a sprint finish without suiting climbers. Lisbon Classic in the PCT was a good event this year and last. So we have options to avoid a pure sprint (but one you add in the hybrid PT riders over the more standard PCT i'm not convinced any of these would work quite as well).
Not too sure on the non-European races immediately. The Philadelphia Int'l route is quite good and not being a totaly inevitable sprint. If we had a Richmond Worlds without the Cobbles that could work as well. Need more research into South American possiblities, but i'm sure there's something good we can find/make-up.

I just can't support at all the concept of a Flat Sprinters race with this PCM version! So much so that i don't know if i'd nominate my riders or be a selector just so i can put the whole event out of my mind to avoid the inevitable annoyance and AI discussions. And that's even when Ewan potentially becomes a massive favourite given his relative successes against mainstream PT talent that would make up most of the top end of the startlist.

Flat PT/PTHC one day races this year:

Milano San Remo: Danny Summerhill
Paris-Tours: Søren Kragh Andersen
Riga Jurmala: Matti Manninen
Philadelphia Int: Peter Kennaugh

It definately gives the option of multiple outings Grin

I voted cobbles, but suddenly the idea of sprint AI giving us AKA in rainbow stripes is very appealing. Pfft

As always I suggest Leon40s' amazing New York route which is beautiful and gives lots of different outcomes and action with sprinters, punchy sprinters, rouleurs/classics riders with big engines and even puncheurs a chance in about that order of likelihood I would guess? Probably the middle two are about equal. Feels like a true World Champs route where the best riders can win if the way the race pans out is suited to them - I've seriously seen every type of finish and very rarely a boring race.

Sprinters with no energy stats or 50s to low 60s HI probably are ruled out but honestly those riders winning a World Champs would feel weird to me at least, a WC route should always have some challenge imo
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Went for Flat but agree it absolutely can't be a pure flat route due to AI. But I think the AI does handle longer sprints with some hill pretty well, where you don't expect lead outs, so endorse that idea.

Although folks weren't pleased with San Remo.

Agree Leon's NY is a great idea. I like the idea of going to the US. Sure we could find some alternatives in South America.

Would have to back Jakobsen to be WC on a flat route this year Cool

knockout
Not a pure flat route.
