World RR Champs
SportingNonsense
The Italians must surely hope to win today, and their strength in depth certainly shows as 7 of their 9 riders appear in the bookies favourites.

***: Di Luca, Bettini, Valverde
**: Schleck, Ricco, Boogerd, Schumacher, Cunego
*: Kirchen, Kroon, Rodriguez Oliver, Sanchez Gonzalez, Freire, Pellizotti, Rebellin, Pozzato

The other 2 Italian team members are rewarded for their efforts in the Continental tour, Pozzovivvo and Ghisalberti, theres no place for Italian champ Fabio Sacchi or sprinter Alessandro Petacchi.

Rebellin, Horner, Wesemann and Voigt will all retire after this race, Bobby Julich's retirement came early though, he was dropped in favour of Kirk O'Bee following a disappointing time trial.

Here is the route:
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese1.png

And here is the break:
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese2.png
Wesemann, Arvesen, Boonen, Moncoutie, Barbosa, Eibegger, Walker, Rogers, Millar, Muravyev, Posthuma, Soler, Boom, Ignatiev.

Valverde starts the real action with around 60km to go. Schumacher, Schleck and Boogerd counter but a descent prevents them gaining a gap.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese3.png

The riders wait til the penultimate ascent of the main hill as Schleck attacks.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese4.png

He reaches the break as Valverde and Boogerd counter.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese5.png

Members of the break join in the attacking too while Di Luca and Rodriguez Oliver make their moves.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese6.png

Boogerd and Valverde find themselves with Ignatiev, Arvesen and Moncoutie. Schleck, Di Luca and Rodriguez Oliver are in the next group.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese7.png

A 2nd attack rids Boogerd and Valverde of the other 3 as the start the final lap.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese8.png

Di Luca and Schleck are clsoing in though, with Rodriguez Oliver sat on their wheels. Wesemann is the last of the break to hang on to them but is soon dropped.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese9.png

And the chasing trio do manage to catch Boogerd and Valverde.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese10.png

As they approach the main hill for the last time, Boogerd attacks.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese11.png

He gets a gap and as they hit the slopes, Di Luca tries to get away.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese12.png

His attack doesnt work due to not enough blue bar, so he instead hauls the group up to Boogerds wheel.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese13.png

And its game over for Boogerd who then slips off the back of the group.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese14.png

Rodriguez Oliver is the weakest hill stat wise in the group but should also be the strongest having used little effort, he moves to the front with Valverde tucked in his wheel and a gap starts to form!!!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese15.png

Di Luca cnat follow and Schleck must be struggling too! Rodriguez Oliver keeps on going, sacrificing himself for Valverde and gives his teammate a very good gap as the sprint begins.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese16.png

Valverde rockets away, but Di Luca and Schleck arent even sprinting at all.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese17.png

A comfortable and impressive victory forAlejandro Valverde, the new world champion!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese18.png

Di Luca does manage to pass Rodriguez Oliver to take 2nd, Schleck is 4th since he cant sprint Pfft
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/World%20Championships/08varese19.png

Boogerd holds on to 5th, but only because Pozzato stopped sprinting once he had amassed a huge gap over the rest of the bunch.

He was Italy's weakest rider, Hill stat wise, so 22nd isnt entirely that bad. He was relaying for the team for much of the race.
