An other thing is the testing you ask. Don't get me wrong, I would also like new ideas/other versions to be tested to know more about it. But to really have a good idea we'll need a lot of testing. Who will do this big amount of testing and report on it? Indeed, the reporters again. So that will definitely add to their "burden" as well. Also, I don't think a lot of reporters actually also have pcm 19/20 and/or 21 soon. So that burden will be on very few people then.
I don't think that burden would have to fall exclusively on reporters. We wouldn't need reports in the same way we do for races. Like, for sprints we would need a handful of screenshots from the last few kilometers at most. For other types of stages, even a few sentences of retelling may be enough. Or once certain patterns emerge, simply results in bulk to look at the distribution of rider results in a large sample size, so that we don't have to rely on anecdotal evidence for anything.
I think we could crowdsource a ton of testing, but like SotD said, we just have to start with that sooner rather than later if moving to another game is an actual possibility. Ulrich has already compiled a MG cdb that works for PCM20, iirc. But I guess we'd need a "go" from the Admins and then some sort of organisation, ideally in its own thread I think.
Nemolito wrote:
That is the thing, I came here because there actually is so much evidence, just scroll through the results and look at the reports and you'll find tons of it. It's not that I'm just "feeling" like sth is wrong with the yellow jersey, but I'm also not going to spend time to make a spreadsheet or whatever to make sure it becomes even more clear - because it is. Like I said, anyone can check the reports
In terms of coming better across to me the one adding a point is responsible for presenting the evidence to be honest. I did exactly what you asked, and came to the opposite conclusion. Like said, I only went through the PT, and there it doesn't seem like your suggestion is reasoned, so when I ask for some sort of evidence it would be much easier to "buy me over" if you wrote:
Take a look at race A, stage B, C and D. The same applies in Race Z, stage X and Y.
Otherwise it becomes every man for himself to justify their oppinion, and that isn't really helpful. As stated before I have seen no evidence of that represenation at PT level. In fact I can only conclude the opposite based on hardcore results, and reading through the final 5km.
I would love to see what happens at PCT or CT level, but must admit I don't really feel like tapping through various results in races I have slim to no knowledge about. In order to create a proper conclusion we need a full representation, and not just when it is going bad or good. If it occurs on 10-15 % of the time then it would be overkill to do anything (IMO), while if it happens 75% of the time we have to look into a feasible solution - if such a thing exist.

Also, I know in general sprinting AI sucks on this version, as I have already said multiple times. I am also not saying it is the only "problem" MG has to deal with. I am also not saying moving to another game is the (only) right option to solve this and/or other problems. I have only said that, if we decide to stick with pcm18, I had some possible solutions to the yellow jersey problem in flat stage races. I know this doesn't solve other problems such as trains being terrible, the DB being a bit too top-sprinter heavy, or any other problem, but it could be a solution to the yellow jersey problem, which is a very real and actual problem with pcm18 as well.
If the "yellow jersey curse" is actually a thing, and not "just" another burden of crappy sprints AI. Looking for the leader is often also something we tend to do more so, than the other riders. If a yellow jersey rider sprints from too far back, I don't see that as a worse thing than the 3 star favorite sprinting too early tbh. And before I can concluce that it actually have anything to do with leading the race I feel like it's really difficult for me to start negating on a possible solution.
Nemolito wrote:
I'm glad you're thinking about the reporters and the burden new changes would mean for them. I am obviously also thinking from that perspective, and I can tell you implementing the first solution I proposed (race the five stages apart and give the same bonus seconds in an excel file) seems very feasible to me and doesn't add that much burden to just creating the report(s) itself, that take so much more time. Honestly, that would be like one minute of excel work as soon as we have the right excel code(s), which I'm sure multiple people on here are able to give.
That's good to know - and if it really is a problem, and can be fixed by such extra workload I would think it's a great thing to implement. I can just see some added workload, not only in the spreadsheet, but also in the splitting up races, creating startlists for 5 races rather than 1 etc., so I can't believe it is something that can be done in a minute or so. But still, if it can be done in a decent timecost, then it's obviously a thumbs up.

Some guys did a lot of testing, with some very well explained results and thoughts. Things changed after that, but many problems stayed and even new ones came up such as the random gap after the first ten riders/sprinters forming and sometimes even causing time gaps.
True, but that is part of the game. Sometimes we move from one game to another, and before doing so we need testing and representation of facts. I fully aknowledge the fact that this takes time - but I don't need a lot of text to the results, rather a resultlist and some observations. Possibly a videotest or two where everyone can see what could be a new issue. Also this burden can be spread across the entire season (or 2/3 seasons). What seems to happen though is A) A lot of talk and B) Very late, and very little test and C) Implementation through some "last minute" voting.
Nemolito wrote:
I am not saying one of my solutions for the yellow jersey problem would mean sprinting will be just perfect. There will still be broken trains and top sprinters will probably not start performing like a half-god. But, a small change (like the first solution I proposed) could make sure that you know your rider won't just lose his lead in the GC because he is leading the GC, which is already a great thing imo.
I know, and I'm not implying that in order to defeat one problem, you have to defeat the remaining too. I would just like to have the necessary information on the problem (I have never heard of it before, and we are almost 2 seasons in) before talking solutions.
Ras Tailtean (C2):
Kip wins first stage, Cissé second. Kip then 18th in stage 2 after not caring, stage win goes to Andersen. In stage 3 Kragh Andersen, despite being the top favourite, simply doesn't care for the sprint. Same counts for nr2 and nr2 green jersey Kip
Tour of Eritrea (C2HC):
Coutinho wins stage 1. In stage 2 he doesn't care, but starts sprinting when it is way too late and leads the peloton behind the sprinting group, even losing a minute over 15 sprinters that got away.
Post Danmark Rundt (C2HC):
Mezgec wins stage 1, doesn't care in stage 2, finishing 19th.
Amissa Bongo (C2):
Te Brake wins stage 1, doesn't care in stage 2, finishing 11th. Reinhardt wins stage 2 and takes over GC, only to finish sixteenth in the next stage after, guess what, he didn't care about sprinting. Lobato del Valle wins the stage and takes over GC. In stage 4, he wasn't seen anywhere until the end, coming back from far away to remain in the lead with an 8th place. In the last stage, Lobato del Valle was nowhere to be seen in the whole sprint until the final shot, where he managed to be sixth after sprinting from very far away, wasn't enough to win the GC. Managers were actually happy to not be leading the GC before the final stage.
Literally any sprinting race/race with two stages being flat in C2 and C2HC this season, except for Tachira, where there were like 4 78 sprinters and the rest lower than 71.
Tour of Qatar (PT) last year:
Howard won stage 2 and took yellow after stage 1 was won by the breakaway without time difference to the pack. Howard gets destroyed in stage 3 after not caring, and when he finally starts caring it is too late and finishes 12th after a sprint from very far. Swift wins the stage and takes the GC. In the next stage, Swift is very far behind, but does manage a decent comeback to finish 10th and remain the GC lead. Swift does decent in the last (sprinter) stage then, not by position (10th) but by actually sprinting and even leading the peloton for a while.
I've seen many instances as well in the HC/C1 as well this season. Not going to search them all like I just did for C2/C2HC, but just two of the ones I reported on (mind you, I've reported on more such yellow jersey curse-stages, and seen a lot more):
Tour of Uppsala (C1):
Kemboi strong to win the prologue, but with his yellow jersey doesn't care to sprint in stage 2, finishes eleventh, also kind of leading the peloton behind the sprinter group.
Tour of Cyprus (HC):
Swift wins stage one and takes the GC. He's chilling in the middle of the pack with 4k to go and starts sprinting very late to finish tenth because he easily passes all the random 70-sprinters ahead of him. His supposed lead-out Kupfernagel doesn't even care about him and finishes third.
I'm not going to search for more examples like I said, even though there are way more. This is not just 15% either, but I guess that's clear already. Why I'm sure that it's a yellow jersey curse (except for, well, these obvious results that just keep coming)? In other races in later stages you can see a sprinter winning a stage and even taking green, and still doing well "normally" in the next stage. Things that come to mind that I've reported on are for example. I think Kump won two stages in a row in Pologne after being far enough behind in the GC and for example Itami was first followed by second in stage 3 and 4 of Cheshire after losing a lot of time in stage 1 on the cobbles.
What I take out of this season so far is that when the teams that are favorite for the win have weak support the AI acts "strange", which is if you think about it good imo.
PCM is never going to be perfect and the Mangame makes it even harder for PCM AI. But in the end instead of trying to fix everything by micro management, I'm in the just deal with it, sometimes crazy results are fun team.
Every PCM is different some are better for sprinters, some are better for stage races etc. Of course it sucks when you focus your team on for example time trailing and it turns out the pcm version we are using sucks at it, I know all about it. But maybe next version you are on the lucky side again. At the end of the season the final rankings are overall pretty realistic when analyzing the teams.
Don't get me wrong if they are easy fixes for some problems I'm all in but just not overdo it is my advise. I have been enjoying the races/reports a lot this season: thanks to all the reporters! If they (the reporters) want to change things I will fully support that, they probably have the best overview anyways and also have more say in this imo.
Alright, so I did ten runs today across four different scenarios, 3 of the first 3, and then 1 crazy one just for fun at the end.
Parameters:
I used a stage from the 2017 Giro. Pan flat, but not edited to be completely straight and wide. Nevertheless, the streets were pretty wide and there weren't any super crazy turns which usually disrupted the trains.
I used the best of the best a CT field could possibly be for a flat race:
- Every CT team (Unless I missed one)
- Best 2 sprinters from each team
- Next 6 best flat riders
So obviously this is a really stacked startlist, more than any inflated DB startlist ever. But to be fair, it's not that much worse than a C2HC flat classic.
I used AKA as the primary subject of study because I know AKA and my team construction best, plus he is the guy that most people have considered when talking about the potential rouleur glitch. I also wanted to use CT so stats wouldn't be so high the daily form is capped at 85. His team featured Bertillson, Eislers, and De Vreese as his main helpers.
I kept the overlay on for a lot of screenshots so you can see who someone is or where exactly we are in the race.
Scenario 1: Completely normal stats
Scenario 2: AKA's Flat decreased to 73
Scenario 3: 77 Flat, but Spr/Acc changed from 81/77 to 79/79
Scenario 4: 77 Flat, 85/81 Spr/Acc
Scenario 1: Normal Stats
For reference, I'm including the startlist for each stage that the game generates. Doesn't seem to be any correlation with results, but it shows who the game thinks is good I guess.
Trial 1
Break is caught and Strava/Carlsberg are the leading teams charging ahead at 15 km to go.
Same teams, no trains yet, just over 5 km left to go.
Naesen gets a gap suddenly. De Vreese is on the front. Nordica and Trans with trains.
Bertilsson leave a gap when he launches and AKA falls behind. Centovalli has Reinhardt, Scully, and Cisse, but they're nowhere to be seen.
Van der Sanden takes the win over Salleh and Carsi. AKA 5th, Bertilsson 8th. Reinhardt barely in top 10, Bouhanni 14th.

Centovalli all over the front this time with Strava, Carlsberg nowhere to be seen.
Sprint is on. Strava still in control, Reinhardt a bit in the wind. AKA well behind.
Reinhardt pulls through the middle to take the win. Van der Sanden the only guy to do well very well again in 2nd. Manarelli, Bouhanni and Lavoine in top 5. AKA fails to sprint and finishes 34th, behind his teammates.

Trial 3:
Little bit more chaotic this time, you can see the turn here in the final.
AKA is isolated and well behind the sprinter's teams.
Bralirwa doing the main leadout. Carsi on the wheel.
Carsi takes a dominating win ahead of Selig and Lobato. AKA doesn't sprint and finishes 36th. Reinhardt also outside the top 10 this time, as Merino Craido finishes ahead of him.

Scenario 2: Decrease AKA's Flat from 77 -> 73
For the next 3 trials, I used the exact same startlist, except I decreased AKA's flat to 73. The point of this test was to see if making AKA's flat too weak to be a rouleur would have any effect. Would he now commit fully to the sprint?
Trial 1
Variety of teams controlling the race throughout the day.
AKA lingering near the front, no team support.
No real trains, just very messy as the sprint opens.
AKA straight up sits up and starts talking on his radio during the sprint.
Carsi takes another win, Bouhanni and Reinhardt behind.
Kragh Andersen wins the sprint of people not involved in the sprint, 25th place.

Trial 2
Agglomeration of Carlsberg and Centovalli guys near the front.
Bertilsson leading out AKA for once, Scully trying to leadout out Reinhardt. Both sprinters can't keep up with their leadouts at first.
AKA manages to launch and looks good for a while, but fades hard and finishes 7th. Sam Bennett pips Reinhardt on the line.

Trial 3:
Guave all over the front paceline for Coutinho.
Centovalli with a very solid leadout, Tyrg too, but further behind.
AKA once again behind, no teammates. He starts his sprint late after a gap opens.
Krieger takes it over Lobato, and another great sprint by Carsi. Reinhardt switched sides of the rode and got slowed up. AKA in 28th.

RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy
Scenario 3: 77 Flat, but Spr/Acc is 79/79 instead of 81/77
Point of this test was to determine if rouleur designation and position is based not on flat stat, but on the ratio relationship between sprint and acceleration. In order to not make AKA too powerful, I decreased his Sprint parallel to increasing his acceleration. So in theory, if sprint > acc in effect, he should be weaker overall.
Trial 1:
Variety of teams pacing, but no Carlsberg.
Centovalli and Nordica looking good forming their trains behind the paceline.
Interestingly, it's Cisse, not Scully, doing the final leadout for Reinhardt this time. Ulanowski doing a great job for Carsi on the front. AKA at the back of this group.
Carsi takes another big win. He's really loving this stage. Some new names in the top place. AKA surfs wheels to finish 9th.

Trial 2:
Nordica with such a powerful leadout this time that he has actually forced a gap in the run in.
AKA again lets a gap go and starts late, he's way behind now.
Carsi holds on for yet another victory. Reinhardt, who was uncharacteristically without a leadout this time, finishes second. AKA strolls in in 24th.

Trial 3:
6 km to go and AKA is just sitting this one out. He's towards the back of the pack and not making any moves.
Messy sprint being led out by Bralirwa. Bertilsson is the Carlsberg rider. Seems he was the rider of choice this time.
Carsi sweeps this scenario with another victory over Keough and Lavoine. Reinhardt doesn't really try this time and gets 17th.
AKA doesn't even leave the saddle. 93rd place.

Scenario 4: AKA at 85/81 Spr/Acc
At this point I just wanted to have some fun. I wondered what would happen if we put AKA at normal stats, then increased both his spr/acc by 4 to max out his sprint. So same difference as usual, but absolutely dwarfing stats of all competitors.
AKA listed as the best rider for the first time.
Carlsberg and Guave are the top teams in terms of numbers nearing 5 km left.
Guave, Carlsberg, and Bralirwa all set up cleanly to start the sprint.
Everyone launches around the same time, and it's just a normal drag race. A bunch of guys swarm AKA, but he's able to win by half a bike length. Carsi finally humbled, finishing 8th.

Conclusions
So I guess these trials prove that there's no cookie cutter role preventing guys like AKA or Ingus Eislers from sprinting all the time, at least based on the ratios of their flat, sprint, and acceleration. The results in all 3 scenarios were very similar for AKA. Minor placings in one trial, but doesn't compete at all in the other two. Stat changes seemed to have little to no effect on the outcome.
In 9 trials, AKA had one top 5 in the very first race, and two lower top 10's. Other than that, he was outside the top 20 every time. Reinhardt was pretty routinely in the top 5-10. Carsi absolutely dominated for the most part, and other guys rotated through the top 5.
At this point then, I guess the only thing I discovered is that there's just no way to salvage a guy like AKA at this point. The game doesn't like him, regardless of his main stat makeup. High acceleration guys generally seem to be prioritized, but having equal sprint and acceleration alone does not make him act as a real sprinter.
On the bright side, some leadouts did work well, though surprising often with several riders lacking in stats like resistance.

Just wondering something here but if you tried to start a career with the MG DB, I think the team selection screen usually says what rider type a rider has. I dont think MG db sets these, so the type that comes up automatically may show what type he's seen as. If its indeed barouder, then perhaps that is the issue.
Could you try experiments where AKA is set as a sprinter (definitively) in the db for test purposes and see if that changes anything?
I think being able to set our "climbers" as "stage racers" and barouders as "sprinters" in the off-season may actually help some of our issues, although its pure speculation at this point.

Just tried this. AKA is indeed judged to be a sprinter by PCM, although there were some other interesting distinctions (e.g. Warbasse as a climber, not stage racer).

@SotD - I report mostly on PT but obviously follow CT so I have a pretty good view on both. I think Pro Tour spints are better and less weird because (1) there are far less sprinters and their stats are more spread and (2) There aren't that many sprinter only GC races. So I think if you only follow mostly PT you get a somewhat rosier view.
@nemolito - like your one stage at a time idea and agree it wouldn't be a big deal and should fix the problem. Don't love the other idea. We probably shouldn't call it the Yellow Jersey curse as that does make it sound like a meme. Perhaps "Riding as GC rider" problem, although that is a mouthful. Also really agree there should be no KOM or reduced KOM points in the sprint focused races, feels like undeserved points given at random.
@bbl - my diagnosis:
Trial 1: AKA rides as rouler with Bertillsson as sprinter. In at least one trial Bertilsson gets a top 10, but mostly he isn't good enough so he doesn't get results. Keough has similar outcomes - some top tens and some no shows.
Trial 2: AKA is now your sprinter. But ACC matters to the game, So he isn't a very good sprinter, in game terms, so in a stacked field he doesn't sprint. In the actual Ras neither Keough or Bennet or Reinhardt sprinted once so not surprised he doesn't sprint in this field with those stats. I think the game sees an 81/77 sprinter as similar to an 77/81 sprinter whereas Mangame players tend to view the former as much better than the latter. I think the game views them both as 79ish and in this field those guys only get to sprint occasionally.
Trial 3: AKA is back to being a rouleur with Bertilssion as sprinter (he gets 1 top 10).
Trial 4: His sprint stats are now good enough to get him treated as a sprinter.
So I think you're right that designation as a rouluer depends on a combination of FL/RS/ST/SP/AC - I believe it also looks at the presence of other riders. I would be interested in Trial 3 with AKA and nobody else anything like a sprinter in your team. To see if he sprints (leadout will be bad). If he does at least we know that if you avoid getting a rider on your team who could be the sprinter the potential rouler will be treated as a sprinter (assuming he qualifies as one)
Another alternative would be run the test with only 5-8 teams with sprinters and fill the rest with generic riders - recognize this would require a lot more work to generate. But this would separate the rouleur problem from the too many sprinters problem.
The game definitely values ACC to some degree, I correlated last years results with stats and came up about 70/30 SP and ACC before considering other stats.
Also, Stamina definitely matters in the selection of a rouler even if the race is 100k.
Which is why Vanbilsen attacks while Bonifazio does nothing. My suspicion is Bonifazio isn't good enough to sprint when you have a leading rouleur, as the team backs the rouler instead. Although not sure the cut point - in the TDF Van der Lijke still sprinted although Holloway rode as a rouleur. But this may vary in tours versus classics.
I agree mostly with what Ulrich wrote. Also I think there is a clear distinction with how the AI handles sprints in a stage race and in a one day race.
If the rouleur role is given to a rider in a stage race, I can hardly remember to see that rider perform late attacks. So he is pretty much useless in sprinter stage races. Why that rider wouldn't be used as a leadout instead? I suspect that the rouleur is either favoured or on equal footing to a sprinter and therefore just rides his own race. Which means he does nothing in this case.
Meanwhile in one day races late attacks come from riders that I imagine get the rouleur role, they attack quite frequently. They position themselves similar to sprinters and either attack or simply sprint like others. In my observation of my own team in these races, I've had 2 sprinters Boeckmans and Saber. On two occasions Saber was in the rouleur role and the other time he was a leadout man. So the 80/82 rider takes prioritity over the 81/79 rider, meaning that ACC is a very important stat. It also shows that the double leadership between a rouleur and sprinter can work. One attacks and the other sprints. But only one day races seem to allow these late attacks.
On the ACC point, a great example is Reinhardt. He has only 79 spr, but has been performing like a top 5 sprinter this year, against PCT competition. I'm not sure any other 79 sprinter has done much in those stacked fields, but with 84 ACC he probably get treated like an 81/82 rider, which would make him one of the best in PCT. While ACC I think has shown to be a very important stat for sprinting, the AI also seems to weigh it quite heavily when detemining who gets sprinting priority.
But like I mentioned in one of my previous posts where I detailed the lopsided scoring of sprinters in the PCT this year. When the startlist is overflowing with quality sprinters in most races, the results will end up being even more random than they should be.
Thanks for the elaboration Nemolito and Ulrich. That's more something even I can understand
If it really isn't a big issue to cut the stages then that seems like a very smart way about it. But isn't the flat oneday races often ridden slightly different with rouleurs going all out more often than in a flat stage in a stagerace? Just so we don't end up messing with the points mechanics too much.

PCM is never going to be perfect and the Mangame makes it even harder for PCM AI. But in the end instead of trying to fix everything by micro management, I'm in the just deal with it, sometimes crazy results are fun team.
Don't get me wrong if they are easy fixes for some problems I'm all in but just not overdo it is my advise.
I agree 100%. And I think what I proposed is one of those possible easy fixes for the yellow jersey problem.
@SotD: It remains to be seen how rouleurs would act if you only select one stage at a time. If it is the same, then no problem I think. If it is actually different and we see more rouleur attacks: also no problem I think But if this little fix would be implemented, that's a thing that can easily be tested quite quickly so people with rouleurs could know a bit better whether it is worth (for them) to send their rouleurs to sprinter stage races.
Of course, for a race starting with two flat stages, there is no such fix. You could switch a second and third stage for example on some occasions, but changing all of those would also be overdoing it I think, sometimes you just have got to embrace the randomness I guess.
Of course, like I said before, everything about that yellow jersey problem might not "count" anymore on other versions. But we'll burn that bridge when we get there
Also, as said above, acceleration indeed seems incredibly important in sprints
Even though I still need to fully read through the latest posts, I am totally against changing the kind of racing in stage races and classics towards sprint stages in stage races as individual classics.
It might be doable with some excel files to later re-arrange the GC outcome but this always comes with extra work. Not only the excel work afterwards but also in the file transfer, DB settings, organization. And imo this is something where extra work must be reduced more than extended.
Right now there are several active reporters or better said, some reporters doing the work of 2-3 people with massive amount of reporting. Those really keep the game running. It does not necessarily mean that those will be able to do so in the future, so we shouldn`t plan to add some more work.
Organization wise the off seasons are hard to handle really and were last year mainly done by 3-4 managers and it`s pretty certrain that the following off seasons will need a lot more people to help out big time to come even close to the pace we used to have.
I agree that certrain things must be looked at AI wise and going to another game might be best (even though it`s not fully secured as far as I read if PCM19 and/or PCM20 are big improvements AI wise). In addition OVL stat adjustment, new calendar as usual, renewals, new riders are all time consuming things where help will be needed for sure as I won`t be able to do as much as in the past years but I know to really think things through, work into those kind of things is needed.
OVL adjustments usually need a season to "check" such as this year when things were made, over the season you see problems, which usually can be adjusted the year after to improve further. Now with a game change very likely/possible, last years OVL adjustment is basically needed to be re-done fully with another year of check due to a different game version. This is something where I will need help, in especially as I personally am not very well familiar with PCM19/20 and likely would make mistakes when considering different rider types. In especially as the MG DB is that big, that it`s not just 8-12 rider types but lots of combined riders such as Demare/Van Stayen/Kump, which are always hard to rate without being too much into one side or even riders that take profit from the game AI such as weirdos like high mo/low hi or midlevel mo/hi/tt kind of riders. Last year showed already that by "simple" formulas as 4-5 years ago you can`t make it fair enough for all kind of riders, so that a lot of extra formulas were needed to adjust specific stat combinations, which would need to be further adjusted to get some more things a bit more right, e.g. the Lopez/Beltran issue with OVL/stat comparison.
Having a OVL based on game performances/scored points might be an idea, which though would need time and most important is something incredibly difficult in years of a game change as things might change heavily and would make the following season very unfair here and there.
Similar it would be almost impossible to make for riders that were FAs or badly planned the year before, so not really something that can be added to the MG I think.
That said, last years formulas for over/underperformances already took note to this issue and fixed it here and there.
To be fair, this does point to the fact that the yellow jersey problem is at best another expression of how weird and random sprints especially at CT level are anyway. If it was an inherent problem, you'd see it at the PT level, too. Arguably, the evidence is pretty significant at CT level, but to say that there are more such random occurences in an environment that is in and of itself more random and also has more opportunities to spit out these random results is a bit circular imo. Like, even in bbl's tests, which are one stage settings, someone like Reinhardt who has been easily the most consistent sprinter this season at times ends up outside of the Top 10, and the riders that were hit with the yellow jersey curse sometimes were guys like Ismael Kip or Lobato del Valle, who I've not noticed as super reliable overall.
I'll do some testing later this week with sprint races one stage at a time, both to see if sprinters are more reliable and to get a feel for how much extra work it would be to put everything together (I tend to agree with roturn that it'll be a bit more than just 1 minute of Excel stuff, but we'll see).
However, I do think that even if we get a bit more realistic results, it should be noted that we give up some other pieces of realism. Like never seeing any rider in any leader shirt at all. And the KoM thing was mentioned already, but in my opinion, that's one of the random things we should embrace the most. The couple of random KoM jerseys my Rwandan neo-pros got this year were some of my greatest moments and to just wave them away saying they're random anyway, teams shouldn't count on those points, just doesn't sit right with me.
Like I said earlier, obviously sprint AI is very flawed in general on pcm18 (don't know about other versions), but according to me the yellow jersey problem is a problem on itself. So to conclude what I think about it (you won't hear me about it anymore, as I don't think I have anything else to add except for what i will say in the next bullet points - but of course if someone doesn't understand what I meant I'll gladly try to explain it):
- If you say it will take a lot of time for one of those solutions I proposed to implement, I don't agree. There can be found quick ways, such as simply giving top ten the points in green they get awarded now, and then have some kind of ranking quite quickly and accurately (for example)
- If you say it would be a shame to implement solution #1 and therefore "losing" KoM, I definitely understand you. But for me personally, overcoming that stupid problem of the GC lead is more important - as there would only be no KoM in like those four/five stage races. But that's a personal thought of course, and as I just said I definitely understand how those few random KoM's can mean a lot to some people (including me, who's hoping for those points in sprinter stage races )
- If you say there will still be random sprints and stupid results, of course I agree. But just the fact that you know your/a sprinter will not sprint because of leading the GC is reason enough for me personally to try to find a rather easy change. I personally would care more about having a chance at a decent sprint from my sprinter when I know he's leading the GC virtually than see him wearing the yellow jersey and know he will not give a flying fuck.
- I don't agree that it doesn't happen in PT, as I have included in my previous post, also for the reason there are less chances of it happening because of fewer two flat stages after each other/sprint stage races.
Opinions differ, and if most of you don't feel the same about solving the problem as I do then so be it, I won't hold any grudge against anyone Like I said, just trying to help, as - in addition to other AI problems - that "solvable" problem has made "reporter-me" quite annoyed several times
To be clear, I was selecting a single GT for my tests every time, and there were no rouleur attacks in the second half of the race in any trial, so I don't think that would fix anything anyway. It seems to be the same as a full stage race's AI.
Indeed, it looks like acceleration is as important if not more than sprint in this version. I don't think that in itself is a problem, it's just that we were told ACC would matter less before we started using PCM 18 (something which has played out on every other terrain). Now you may not even sprint despite having the highest sprint stat in the peloton.
The weird thing to me is the the game:
1.) Still generates these guys as sprinters in career
2.) Still places them as sprinters on the favorites list
So if they're acting as rouleur's, the game is doing it secretly - and randomly. As Ulrich pointed out, it seems AKA went from being a rouleur to a sprinter between trials of the exact same scenario, with the same stats and startlist. There was no correlation at all.
I can do a quick stage race test of the yellow jersey curse later today if I have time.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy
The ACC is definately playing a smaller part in the game than with PCM 15, but it may not be the scenario for sprinters indeed. But the ACC does play a part in the finale of other races aswell I think. That would explain why Lecuisinier is winning difficult HI finishes despite having 75HI. He does have a pretty solid ACC, much like Herklotz (Also last year before the training). Same basically applies for Koretzky who isn't a top puncheur, but have a very high ACC. This could be one of the explanations for why De Bie and Bakelants isn't performing all that well. They don't have bad ACC, but compared to the top puncheurs around them - they do.
Riders like Phinney and Lecuisinier win way more than Madrazo, which could again be something regarding the ACC. An issue riders like Kritskiy, Tenorio and to a part Haig also suffers a bit from. All of which get good GC results, but hardly enough stage succes compared to how strong they are.
Looking at the sprints (I have seen), riders like Lo Cicero, Guerao, Vanderbiest, Kristoff, Avelino does tend to perform worse than Groenewegen, Manninen, Boeckmans, Guardini or even Carsi (from time to time).
I am aware that other things play a huge role - much like random positioning, random trainsucces, random sprint start etc., but over the course of a season there might be some truth to it.
Looking at the top 15 sprinters in the PT (cleared of van Stayen, Demare, Bewley etc.)
1 John Degenkolb 84SPR 81ACC
2 Eduard Grosu 83 SPR 80ACC
3 Bryan Coquard 84SPR 83ACC
4 Peter Kennaugh 82SPR 81ACC
5 Dan Holloway 79SPR 81ACC
6 Dylan Groenewegen 82SPR 81ACC
7 Jonas Ahlstrand 83SPR 82ACC
8 Leigh Howard 82SPR 79ACC
9 Sam Harrison 78SPR 81ACC
10 Hsuan Ping Hsu 79SPR 79ACC
11 Tomohiro Hayakawa 79SPR 79ACC
12 Artem Samolenkov 81SPR 79ACC
13 Davide Appolonio 81SPR 78ACC
14 Emiliano Contreras 78SPR 80ACC
15 Ingus Eislers 80SPR 76ACC
At PT level there are 19 sprinters with 80+SPR. Out of those 6 have also got 80+ACC. You find these sprinters all in top 7 with only Dan Holloway mixing it with his 79SPR 81ACC.
Of the 13 remaining 80+ SPR riders with 79 or less in ACC only 4 find themselves in the top 15. Those sprinters seem to mix it up fairly evenly with riders at 78-79SPR but with 79+ ACC. Riders like Romain Vanderbiest 82SPR 77ACC, Danny van Poppel 81SPR, 78ACC, Sondre Holst Enger 81SPR 78ACC, Giacomo Nizzolo 80SPR 79ACC, Moreno Moser 80SPR 79ACC, Cameron Meyer 80SPR 76ACC and Matthew Goss 80SPR 75ACC isn't on the list, while there is room for the likes of Holloway, Harrison and Contreras instead.
Only 2 riders with less than 79ACC have made it to the list:
13 Davide Appolonio 78ACC
15 Ingus Eislers 76ACC
Obviously it isn't the entire truth as it also revolves around planning and luck, but the numbers seem pretty evensided to me... I have no clue if this is also the case in the lower divisions, but I would expect it to be somewhat true. So in that regard sprint results (over a season) haven't changed drastically from PCM 15. Only the leadouts and consistency seem to be very different.
From the vote thread - if we switch to PCM20, there will need to be something done about ridiculous breakaways. From just playing, even with my own input, some breaks get 20+ minute gaps and finish so far ahead that GC or classic is easily won by the group itself. And it wasn't a one time thing, but also it's not too common an occurance, but it does happen. I figure if MG DB would also have an issue with it, it's probably only fixable by reporters using their own judgement and redoing the stage
