Generally riders - especially established guys in their 30's - don't come back from taking a "break" in this sport. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we've seen Dumoulin race for the last time.

When I see a case like this I always wonder, which came first: his motivation disappeared when he saw that he wasn't the top rider of the team, or he stopped being a top rider when the motivation disappeared?

I don't think the team competition is the cause here and I don't think it's exactly a loss of motivstion either. Mental health can affect professional athletes like it can affect anyone of us and I hope we get to see him racing again, but if it's affecting him the way it seems to be doing now better to stay away.

That injury plus the setbacks that it came with seem to have taken a toll of him.

Volta a Comunitat Valenciana has been called off. Expect the same for the French races. UCI needs to study the possibility of refurbishing the calendar. It is more than apparent that despite all efforts, the risk is too high for municipalities to organize or host a cycling race. Not sure if even in March things will be stabilized, so alternatives must be planned.

The GP de Marseille still appears to be on this weekend. Hopefully nothing will change in the next couple of days.

It says on the Cycling News website that it'll be shown on Eurosport, but I can't see anything on the listings I can see.

If Bessèges goes forward and cases don't go up in France at least Provence and Haut Var can go ahead I hope.. The Spanish races seemed very well organized, safely, but Spain is doing really bad right now so it was expected.

I hope France can remain stable, if worst comes then UAE should still deliver some solid action this month, opening weekend aswell I believe can go forward as Belgium is doing "well" and one-day races are easier to run safely.

Races are going down but it's all about staying hopeful, days will get warmer, lockdowns all across Europe will limit transmition, vaccination will also start having it's effects, I want to believe from maybe May onwards very little races will be postponed!

I think that the big races like Paris-Nice, the Monuments will be kept, however, for the smaller races the situation is and will still be unclear.

Well, Marseillaise and Etoile de Besseges seem to go ahead regardless of any tighter restrictions.

I anticipate a long discussion on this topic during the following weeks: https://www.cycli...littering/ .

Yeah the UCI really doesn't do themselves a favor here. I mean I like that they try to support the safety, but there are ways to do it that are definitely better than forbidding the "super-tuck". Now taking the aero-position away is just stupid, it seems like they're trying to avoid all incentives of attacking.

Couldn`t agree more with Keisse there. As long as the UCI is not doing necessary stuff, they are responsibe for to guarantee better safety such as barriers, markers, route guidelines for organizations etc., they shouldn`t start to bring in rules like those.

While the super-tuck rule is at least not totally out of mind to be honest, the handle bar rule is simply not needed imo and I doubt it`s possible to really ban this position fully neither. They have rules about what the bike is allowed to be, so they really shouldn`t care a lot how riders ride those bikes then.

Imagine the number of riders who with the adrenaline of the race forget about the littering rule and end up disqualified.

df_Trek
now UCI should also post the long list of crashes in super-tuck position...

To be clear, the "supertuck" was technically already illegal. The rule is basically the riders must maintain three points of contact: hands on bards, ass on seat, feet on pedals. This is more a reminder and warning it will now be inforced.

UCI also, in the same press release, are changing the rules around barriers (to be confirmed after consultation with riders, teams, organizers etc), race markers and signs are to become universal across all races to avoid confusion, stricter rules on protective barriers around obstacles and around course safety, adding in a lisence and points system for all vehical drivers, an official clear "safety car" procedure for race neutralization, and more.
Basically everything everyone has complained about in the past few years is being changes, updated and brought under a new structure in the rules.

But you know, talking about supertuck generates clicks and engagement for social media and news sites. Saying "the UCI is making all the asked for changes" is boring, if closer to the truth.

Actually, as part of the UCI's wider look at safety the are drawing up a list of all crashes within the last 5 years. So yes, there will be a long list of all super-tuck crashes coming

I like it that they finally try to solve the constant littering. It is completely bonkers how thousands of riders have thrown away their fucking garbage for decades and not once there has been a discussion to stop this. I fucking complain about people throwing their McDonalds trash out of the car, I might as well complain about riders throwing empty bottles and plastic package that at best weights a few gram.

Good job UCI!

Also, lol at supertuck and breakaway. How about you take care of your own shit with the cars and finishes before you point the finger of safety at the riders

Agree. I think Cycling should really try to be marketing itself as a very environmentally friendly sport, which could help to bring in new fans who support sustainable sporting, similar to Formula E. (Although both sports obviously still have their negatives, like cars following peloton, or massive freight for shipping car parts in Formula E's case)

.

But wouldn't that make climbing out of your seat Contador style illegal? Pfft
