Classique Pico Basile Discussion
Welcome to Bioko Island, part of Equatorial Guinea and home to Pico Basilé. A towering 9,878 feet (3,011m) above sea level this climb will stand out from anywhere on the route and all riders will know what suffering awaits them. The route starts out in the south, working its way around the western edge of the island with a few good bumps along the way before visiting the coastal town of Malabo and a quick curcuit then turning up Pico Basilé for the finish.
At the top the Virgen de Bisila awaits the riders
For the second time the PCT will challenge this mountain early in the season, and for the second season one rider will stand out as the overall favorite. Last season it was Stefan Denifl, but the result wouldn't go his way as he would take second behind Sergio Luis Henao Montoya. This year Justo Tenorio will take the role, and defend from several challengers. A few riders will know this climb well, with nearly half of the top 15 returning this season. Natnael Berhane (4th), Ki Ho Choi (5th), Pierre Paolo Penasa (7th), Magno Nazaret (8th) though he will be helping surely, Rafael Valls (9th), Jianhua Ji (13th), and Jarlinson Pantano Gomez (15th).
| Rider | MO | | | | Rider | MO | | Justo Tenorio | 84 | | | | Pierre Paolo Penasa | 80 | | Rigoberto Uran | 82 | | | | David Abal | 80 | | Tiago Machado | 81 | | | | Florentino Marquez | 80 | | Daniel Martin | 81 | | | | Patrick Schelling | 80 | | Natnael Berhane | 81 | | | | Jarlinson Pantano Gomez | 79 | | Matala Seboka | 80 | | | | William Chiarello | 79 | | Primoz Roglic | 80 | | | | Rafael Valls | 79 | | Ki Ho Choi | 80 | | | | Marc Christian Garby | 79 | | Richard Antonio Carapaz | 80 | | | | Magno Nazaret | 79 | | Jianhua Ji | 80 | | | | Sergei Pomoshnikov | 79 | | Dominik Nerz | 80 | | | | Teodoro Costagli | 79 |
Several teams have pairs listed up there so it will be interesting to see how the duos of Machado/Seboka/(Gomez), Roglic/Chiarello, Choi/Carapaz/(Pomoshnikov), and Pensa/Abal determine leadership or if they are riding for themselves. There is also a massive amount of very solid to good climbers that surely will be looking to spoil this from a breakaway, get one of them having a really good day and it might be good bye to the peloton.

I'd certainly like aggression from Garby or someone. If not, at least a top 20 then. Obviously can't expect much more in any climbing race.

Let's see how Marquez goes here to understand what to expect for the season. I think anything better than a top 10 will be a bonus. Hoping Marquez goes on the attack.
Thanks for the preview.

Let's go Nerz!
The long, steady climb should suit him very well, with the hill stat likely not playing a big role in what should be a fight to avoid getting dropped before most others do. His team also looks very capable of supporting him right up until the end.

The Andorra shirt looks so good as minishirt!! Rooting for Roglic for obvious reasons, but watch out for Dan Martin having a huge season start here. |

Thanks
Full on mountain squad!!! Really excited for this, competition is pretty big so I'd be happy with a Top5. More particularly excited also seeing how Seboka and Pantano deal with the climbers and how they're able to support Machado, if they'd be in for some minimal points I would be happy too.

First race of the season where we have a real chance of getting a good result.
I am very curious to know how the duo Roglic / Chiarello will behave, much of our season depends on a good understanding between these two.
Our leaders will not complain about their lack of support as they will have the best climbers on the team to support them.
Tenorio is the clear favorite game to win with the other open places for those who perform in better shape

After a strong team performance in East Java, the mountain crew now head out to the Pico Basile event. Hope for similar results to last season in this outing where Berhane was strong with initially decent support from Ji at crucial race point, with Ji then also fighting on to bring home solid ranking points. Field is strong, but tbh I expected to be even stronger/deeper. Few contenders not here that might be expected, but I guess RD constraints limit some of the top hitters in the division. Important to capitalise on these opportunities!

I gotta say, my team always finds new ways to fail. Garby getting dropped before the climb even started was just a laugh for me at this point. No point getting frustrated every time when it's just status quo.

Amazing start for Martin, made great use of his better ACC here, no shame losing to Tenorio simply the better climber a very fair win. Congratz Mresuperstar

Nice intense race, gotta love the aggressive approach of Penasa. Tenorio doing, what he had to do. Perfect timing, but brave effort from Martin as well. Thanks for the report (good coverage, but would have added one or two additional pictures for the finishers behind the top three).

Third place for Uran is good, had hoped for better but he was beaten fair and square. Thanks Kentaurus for the report.

I'm not usually one for the overwhelming favourites, but it is nice to see Tenorio win as he should putting the MO advantage to good use. A good start for ENI - MOL's trident!
And thanks Kentaurus for a great debut (?) report!

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Woo! Tenorio finally asserts his dominance. Only his second win with the team and other one was a NC. So yeah, this was long overdue.
Thanks for the report, and for loaning me workhorse helper Barta.

First test of the new Kraftwerk climbing squad.
Encouraging to see 4 riders in the top 25 but Nerz was unable to get into the top 10, hopefully he can manage this in future races.
