[HC] Tour of Beijing
4 stages – 715.2 km
Welcome to the 6th edition of Tour of Beijing, continuously on the MG calendar since 2013.
About the route:
Since last season we have seen some changes to the route, from 5 stages it has been cut down to just 4 stages this season, but that won’t change anything regarding the overall result, as it was only the last relative easy stage that was cut out.
Last year we saw Kinoshita (Meiji) dominate the GC over the first three days, but lose everything on the 4th stage handing it to Diego Ulissi (Generali) on what will be the last stage this time. We must expect stage 4 to become the queen stage again, but stage one and three may well be very influential on the overall outcome too.
We still have the 2nd stage for the sprinters and a few second-tier PCT sprinters have decided to attempt what may be a relative easy stage win compared to more sprinter friendly races.
The local Chinese spectators will hope to see local stage racer Jiankun Liu do well although he would like a harder race in high mountains. Also young Chinese Jianhua Ji will take part in the race, for him just to get through a hard pro-race like this will be huge.
Previous winners
No rider or team has yet been able to win the race more than one time.
Ulissi (2017) Kinoshita (2016) Bellis (2015) and Betancourt (2014) all here to attempt to do it first.
Favorites:
As I see it we got two riders equally strong riders with the same chances to win the race. Kinoshita with a higher stamina, Lutsenko with better acceleration, and then McCarthy with as good stamina as Kinoshita but with a critical acceleration.
Those three will be my podium candidates if I had to put in a bet, but:
Flügel Anuar Aziz Froome and not forgetting last year’s winner Ulissi with his insane stamina all very competitive and almost just as likely winner as the three.
So we a in for a nail biting race where nothing is decided before the fat lady starts singing on Mentougou Miaofeng Mountain on the very last day.
Outsiders:
We got more great riders for this kind of hilly profile, not riders I would expect to be able to win, but riders that may well push the previous mentioned out of top 5, and if things turn out a bit weird maybe even grab a podium.
Betancourt, Costa, Waeytens, Dowsett, Bystrom, Chaves and Juul-Jensen
More riders comes here with a dream to get a result, not winning I guess but looking for points and if have the legs a top 10 result
In this group previous winner Bellis with riders like Caruso, Roux, Barbin, Dyrnes, Palini, Quevedo, Boily, Yates Moazemi Barrio Mehr-Wenige Zingle Moscon Stuyven Levarlet Diggle Le Gac and Lavery
Some of those will have to work for a team leader but might still bring home a bit of points for the team.

Top 10 from Waeytens and some stage points for Pelucchi would be the goal. Unfortunately one of those two has a tendency to let me down.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Quevedo hasn't had a good result so far, let's hope he can turn that around
Manarelli for the one flat stage, having his chance once more.

I want JJ to get a stage podium, finish top 10, and AKA to get a podium on stage 2. I usually don't get what I want.

Kinoshita needs to win this. He's been having a poor year, and the race really should suit him pretty well. Also we need to beat Ulissi.

Let's see what Bystrom and a very weak squad around him can do (sending some guys to Nantahala), but i guess i can't expect races like Down Under or South Africa from him all season, though we need them if we want to fight for promotion till the end

Time for some successful breakaways! Think that is our best chance for points.

A forced race here, not expecting much but if Roux can break his way into the top 15 somehow I'd be satisfied. Jams and Areruya both here and would like to see them in breaks, though they'd be hard to win from or win the KOM. No idea why I didn't send a sprinter here.
There's other riders better than him for it here but I'd love to see a stage top 5 from Roux on Stage 3 if the last climb doesn't see attacks after how he won a stage in South Africa, unlikely I know

With Froomes season in mind, a top 5 would be great..

Despite not having a favourite, I need something from Caruso, Zingle and Le Gac here to keep us in the fight for survival! Caruso and Zingle both have the ACC to be dangerous so hopefully they put that to use.

Interesting race for us here, even with our lack of a real favourite here. Bellis I assume can do pretty decent here so lets hope he can be up there in every stage and fight for a top5/10 GC!

Costa is a little lower in the favourites list than I would've liked but it's no surprise that the best punchers of the division are here. Top 10 is the realistic goal then.

Hope Flugel can carry his Tour de France form into this race & Haller goes well in the sprints. Could be a good race for Kraftwerk, we need it!

I don't know how many times I have to remind my team that anonymity is the last thing we want. This is do or die time.

Well, that's not much time lost, but the fact Quevedo remained completely anonymous is more concerning to me...

Great effort by McKenna to take KoM jersey, making up for the now sure lack of GC depth with the awful rides by Barrio, Levarlet and Ndayisenga

Decent to get 2nd. Id rather win the GC than get a stage win, so getting time on all but 4 riders is a good start.

Not the best stage for the team but at least all 3 of my GC candidates finished in the main bunch at +24.

Nice to see Roux active enough to sprint in the peloton group. Shame nobody got in the break, first time Schomber has done something in PCT though

Jeez, this is a heavily stacked start-list for a PCT puncheur stage race given the clash with Nantahala Classic - seems to have had no impact in splitting the start-lists!
Stage 1, and most of the '81' club have already gained some time on the rest of the mere mortals. WCC seemingly very passive, with our main riders only realy being mentioned when potentially faltering. In the end time lost to the top favourites, but still in the fight for decent point scoring placings if Betancourt and Boily can decide to engage their brains in the remaining key stages!
