Sky will end its cycling sponsorship after the 2019 season.

Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s Group Chief Executive, said: “We came into cycling with the aim of using elite success to inspire greater participation at all levels. After more than a decade of involvement, I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved with Team Sky and our long-standing partners at British Cycling. But the end of 2019 is the right time for us to move on as we open a new chapter in Sky’s story and turn our focus to different initiatives including our Sky Ocean Rescue campaign.

Dave Brailsford:

While Sky will be moving on at the end of next year, the Team is open minded about the future and the potential of working with a new partner, should the right opportunity present itself.

Don't pop your cork just yet. There's always the chance Brailsford will find a new sponsor and they'll just continue with a new name.

It's going to take a huge sponsor to keep the team as it is. Combined with the negative reputation the team currently has, I think it's unlikely it'll be a Sky 2.0 version.

Actually, please let it happen that the new sponsor doesn't have the budget for Froome and he's forced to sign with Team Wiggins.

On a serious note though, as much as Sky are disliked by many, Love them or Hate them, in Britain they have had a massive impact. They have taken a country that historically has had no impact in the World of Cycling and have turned them into one of the most powerful cycling nations in the World. They have taken a minority pass-time and turned it into the fastest growing sport in the country and brought press coverage to a sport that previously got a passing mention in July and once every four years at the Olympics.

Hopefully Britain can continue to grow as a cycling nation and won't go the same way as the USA following the collapse of Postal Service and Highroad with TVG as their greatest hope on the World Stage.

I think it's unlikely they will find another British sponsor who can put in that level of funding. Maybe they will have to look overseas for their funds.

I mean I already read "Brailsford in a race against time to find new sponsor" literally hours after the news is unveiled and 7 months before the due date.. I swear

No way a sponsor emerges with the money of Sky, right? While it may not be the end for the team, I hope it's the end for their market monopoly, expensive "marginal gains," and complete race control.

If the Sky dominance era ends with the decade, I will be very relieved. That being said, I don't know how they will not get another sponsor, and I'm a bit surprised Sky is leaving. Maybe the negative press was enough and they feel like they've gotten all the exposure they can out of it.

I think they'll find a sponsor. They are a ready made Tour de France winning team. That could be worth something to the right sponsors. It's not as if sponsoring a cycling team, even the biggest one, costs as much as sponsoring other sports teams.

As a short term deal covering 2-3 seasons I think someone will come in.

I think it's very likely. Taking over a team like Sky really is the best possible showcase in cycling, cause you got several stars that will bring you big time TV success on long term contracts. Plus it's so much money in british sports events these days that I can't look past a british sponsor taking it over.

If not, I'm sure there'd be middle-eastern or chinese investors that would love to take over such team. I'm 98% sure the team will continue on existing in a very similar manner as it does today, just under a new name.

Cycling in the UK is still one of the top growing sports, and government backing of everyday bike usage is growing too. There are tons of smaller to mid tier cycling companies here that have interests in the pro sport, just look into our domestic scene. None of those are really big enough or prepared enough to step up to a higher level.

However for another sizable UK company to step in and fund a WT team, that would not surprise me at all. There is easily the fan base in the UK to support it, and with the regular and growing tv and media coverage there is tons of local advertsing potential. It wouldn't likely be Sky level of investment but average WT funding built around a GB core of riders like Geraint, Swift and younger generation Pidcock, Geoghan-Hart, Haytor and plenty of reasonably WT level domestiques.

The super Team Sky is gone. But a new team in a similar fashion to that of 2010-2011 don't be surprise to see appear.

I mean: Mclaren just signed a deal with Bahrain-Merida today! There's definitely companies around who want to get involved in the sport.

While the Murdoch empire is pretty gone out of sky so is its cycling spirit. The retreat of Sky from cycling is a pretty perfect example how the personal ambitions of Murdoch's son have kept Sky investing such a ton of money over the years for a great RoI with multipe TdFs to their name. Obviously they got a lot from it after completing dominating the market moneywise. At least Sky is cycling in Britain.. And looking at the recent history of the bland froome doper and all the media controversy around it, I think it's understandable that the new owners see no reason why they would keep this "marginal gain" hall of fame running.

I appreciate big corps investing money into this sport, and appreciate the sponsor itself, similiar how it was with the drug-ridden stall of Rabobank or Once. But I surely hope that Brailsfraud and his clique have to face major budget cuts so that the next decade won't be a Tour de borefest again.

Now watch the Chinese taking over.. Pfft

I was really sad when I heard about Sky leaving cycling. No matter how much we love to hate them they've really made an impact in the sport. A team that soon will be remembered as legendary. One for the history books. Insane benchmark in the sport. Beautiful shirt designs. Pinarello development. Not only have they made a top team, they've marked Great Britain as a dominant cycling nation. Some people say they have brought the whole team and tend to forget most of the team are built on talents.

New era. I'm convinced a new sponsor will make an offer. British? not sure. Chinese? not sure. Arabian? not sure. Some budget? Not sure. However the history tells us it can both be a failure nor a success. The odds are against us but still visible. Movistar once was called Banesto with Indurain and Delgado, Quick Step was once called Mapei with Museeuw and Steels. There is still hope. Legendary teams have historically been replaced with legendary teams.

I will enjoy Sky’s last season in the sport and give the best hopes for the future.
Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever.

Geraint Thomas is voted the British Sports Personality of the Year.

Wonder how Froome feels about this

2011 - Mark Cavendish Wins
2012 - Bradley Wiggins wins
2013-2017 - Chris Froome wins 4 Tour de France titles and Andy Murray wins SPOTY 3 times for losing to Djokovic, Nadal and Federer week in, week out.
2018 - Geraint Thomas wins

Well it's not really a personality contest. It's a sporting achievement contest. (Although in reality it's just a popularity contest).

Should be renamed Sports Person of the Year.

Rocket Ronnie o Sullivan should of won it hard to believe he has never been nominated which is a joke .guy just won his 19 major snooker title after 25 years at the top of the sport and he's still the man to beat .
