Giro d'Italia Discussion

Thought Amador might get away from Schleck for a minute, but Schleck is just too much to handle in the mountains. I'm happy to not lose time to Dombrowski here, who looks to be the biggest challenger for 2nd overall. If Schleck keeps getting bonus seconds then he will win despite the TT. Amador would need at least 1 stage where he gains time on Schleck in the mountains to have any chance at winning.

Pretty good stuff from Guldhammer, really. Very cool to see him aggressive. Fair enough he isn't among the strongest climbers and also looses quite a bit of time to direct rivals in the final kilometers, but I prefer to see him trying and fail instead of defending an 7th or 8th place in the GC. You never know, one day he might get rewarded Pfft

For the GC, 9th place looks like the best I can hope for seeing Alarcon follows close. But also that will be challenging with a strong Catteneo chasing behind. Congratulations on the win, SN! Schleck does definitely not look like a man ready to give way for others speaking of a GT win.

Enjoyed the report, roturn, thank you a lot for that Smile

He didn't really had the legs in the end, but that was just what I wanted to see from Stake Laengen. Hopefully more of that in the final week!

Will be interesting to see how the many DNFs will effect the next stages. A bit surpringsly I only lost one rider. While I don't expect them to be a factor in the TT due to fatigue, they hopefully will be alert when the breaks go.

A pity for Aker to lose Ciolek. One of the big disappointments this Giro without a doubt.

Would have liked to see Lecuisinier staying with Morton to stand a chance to upset for 5th, but 6th is as good as it's going to get realistically, so I can't complain about that.

I would really like to see either Vasyliv or Chamorro attack though, as they are both way down in the GC atm. Carapaz finally overtook Vasyliv so now we have to see if 4th can be saved for him in the U25. Would be a good result for him despite a dismal GC result, well outside the top 30. The Team GC definately won't work out in our favor here unfortunately.

Also, losing Vlatos here is quite a bummer. He wasn't very likely to do a top result, but might have helped us achieve a good team GC result with Vasyliv and Lecuisinier tuted to do quite well on the ride...

Atleast Tzortzakis survived so he stands a small chance to sprint to a few more points. I guess we'll have to take what we can.

Yap. Only fighting for 4th place then. Better not f**king this up, Lachlan.

There's no stopping Schleck is there? If Amador doesn't crack in one of the mountain stages, Dombrowski will have to settle for third here. I guess I'm a big disappointed by that - he had me dreaming after beating Taaramae in his season opener.

At this point, I just hope we turn one of these podiums into a stage win.

Fitting end to Ciolek's Giro, I guess. It's just a complete disaster, results wise.

Suspect we're about to join the real battle to avoid relegation as well with such lack of results from the guy we built the main part of the team around this season. At least that should be a lot of fun Smile

My guess is he will settle for a safe 5th to be honest. Dombrowski, Schleck, Alarcon and Amador are all better riders, so not that surprising though. He is much better than the next in line however, so anything but 5th would be highly surprising.

Nah... You're not in the relegation battle Wink - But definately not the season everyone expected! Guldhammer still doing reasonably well though.

As good as Schleck has been, I still think there's a chance we get heartbreak for Andy as revenge for the 2017 Vuelta from Dombro!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Disappointing to lose the jersey basically only because Schleck gains wings as the race leader.
Bongiorno on the other hand with exactly the ride I hoped for from him! Sadly it wasn't meant to produce a huge gap, but 3+ minutes on Bibby and Kolesnikov in particular are important with the TT to come. Maybe there's enough energy for one more of those adventures in him later.

Ciolek and Avelino not making it to the next sprint stage sounds great for us in theory, but I also fear that heavily increases the chances of a break making it to the end..I really hope I'm proven wrong.

Cattaneo was very well at this 14ª stage only sinned for not being able to stand in the front group unfortunately it was not so well on the 15ª. Too bad he's already wasted so much time on previous stages. If he continues like this until the end of the race it is still possible to dream of a place in the top 10.

With some of the sprinters coming out of the race in this stage, I'm hoping Silvestre can get a good result again in the next stage. Still I think it will be a good opportunity for the break

True words, I guess. Still sucks that he can't be amongst the best even on one single day, that matters here. I know his weakness, but still. We've seen miracles before Smile

Love what Choi did there. A little heartbreaking to not hold on and take the stage win, that would have made this wildcard worth its price in one day, but nonetheless a great performance.

Can't complain about the effort. Once again good to see Olsson in the break. The hope for the next flat stage is probably to see Wisniowski or Kragh Andersen trying though.

Good to see Groenewegen finally waking up, bit cio is just on a roll these day! Congrats Smile

Sorry roturn, you would've deserved that one. Frown

Just no words left by that point. It looked like a losing battle, but the perseverance was incredible.

I spent some time with the MG wins file, and if I'm not mistaken, this 5th stage win for Demare puts him above the four by Alarcon (2017) and Swift (2013) into the all-time record position for most stage wins in a single Giro d'Italia by a non-Italian!

He's also tied for second overall if we include Italians with Cunego (2008) and Sella (2012), while the record belongs to Cunego again with six stage wins in 2011 (four of those on consecutive stages btw).
A win in Brescia could even tie that.
