The Route

We're back on flat terrain for the longest stage of this year's race. 231 kilometers from Fougères to Chartres end with a bit of a slope of up to 4%.

The Contenders

Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep)
Marcel Kittel (Katusha)
Peter Sagan (Bora)
Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal)
Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ)

Same riders as in previous flat stages mentioned here, in addition to the likes of Groenewegen, Colbrelli, Laporte or Kristoff.

---------------

Possibly the longest day of racing, possibly not the most exciting one. First finish in a somewhat bigger city I think, so maybe some nice images in the final kilometers. What do you think about this stage?

I know Latour impressed yesterday, but I wouldn't call him a favourite for today's stage Wink
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Degand got away on his own, decided he didn't want to breakaway alone, decided to drop back. Peloton slows down in order to not catch Degand Grin

He must've meant Laporte, who we all know is going to win despite his ailments from that stage 2 crash.

Laporte is indeed who I meant. Didn't have the crash in mind either, but share the unrestrained confidence in his abilities nonetheless Pfft

I'm not expecting a good sprint by Sagan after last 2 stages where was much more committed than other sprinters...but you can never say, he is Sagan Cool

Great win by Groenewegen. Sagan's camping on Nando's wheel is hilarious

Holy.. What a massive sprint by Groenewegen. Simply just sprinted Gaviria out of his wheel. At first I thought he was too far behind, but he came to the front after he took Kristoff's wheel, which was a smart move. Great to see him winning with all the sprinters present, because at the Champs Elysees last year half of the sprinters already left the Tour.

Shape level for most of sprinters is really disappointing, at almost the end of first week someone has not reached yet

I'm not surprised. Groenewegen has been the fastest sprinter all year. It's just that he doesn't have the support other sprinters have and to place yourself then is hard.

I knew if he had 1 free air sprint he'd win, easily. And that was this. Hopefully for the others he won't get the opportunity more because then he'll just keep winning, easily.

Groenewegen had a perfect leadout in Kristoff. Wont happen again too.

I am more surprised that Sagan can take it so easy. They all seem to be disinterested in it. www.ugly-smilies.de/data/ugly.gif

I know Kittel has been shit all year long but seeing how awful he is, any explanation for that? Is it just that he is off the quick step, did he have an injury, off-year? For a guy who won 7 stages last year, he sure is nowhere to be found.

Off year I guess.. 2015 was similar, after an year with tons of success he just had a blank year, 1 victory only (against 13 in 2014, 6 of them in GT's). Leadout never seemed an issue, he could use that excuse in his first race but Katusha have had excellent leadout for at least these two years he just lacked something big.. I find likely that he doesn't have that risk required to be up there, doesnt trust his leadout much too

I can smell the dutch bias over here. According to PCS, only looking at the 2018 season, he loses out narrowly to Demare and quite clearly to Viviani, easily.

Groenewegen had a great day and thats nice to see, but he wasn't the fastest all the time in the tour even. Stage 1 he wasn't, stage 2, 4 or 5. He was today.

I think he was fastest in stage 4, but he was too far back to even have a shot on victory. But if you see how fast he came to the front he could've won it if he were more to the front.

I get the Viviani argument but Demare?
