Time to start the World Champs planning, with a vote on the terrain type. As usual, previous year's route type is excluded.
History:
2016:  Cobbles
2015:  Mountain
2014:  Flat
2013:  Hill
2012:  Cobbles
2011:  Hill
2010:  Mountain
2009:  Hill (Flat finish)
2008:  Hill
Vote on exact location/route will follow once there is a clear winner here. Please nominate suggestions for routes in this thread.
Generally the ITT and TTT routes will match the RR course.

Something along the lines of A San Sebastian finish is my suggestion I've seen a few in the PCM16 from countries like Monaco Greece and Croatia of different difficulties but id like to see one which balence attacks of the final hill and a reduced sprint |

Oceania or Asia seem to be a logical choice. A flat finish from a hopefully rather selective hilly parcours as well.

A route around Nice and Monaco, including Ezé, that can be hard but at the same time allow many riders to be in contention.

I'd go for what would be a medium mountain stage in a GT, the kind of thing where a Puncher with a good mountain stat could be competitive against the pure climbers.

I'm also going with the popular option of a hilly race. A flat finish would be nice as well.
As to the location oceania seems sensible. Maybe New Zealand?

As much as the thought of an NZ route makes me very excited, I'd like to present something a little different:
Presov - Poprad. First off credit to trekbmc. This is an interesting route and not a circuit - strange for a WC and I guess may get it rejected. I think a longer 15-20km flat finish can be added on either after or in place of some earlier sections given the flat plains around Poprad. I'd class this race as on the hilly side of undulating - and it's apparent hill is the overwhelming favourite given it seems we're going into a bit of a cycle. What this route also has (and don't ask me where) is one cobbled sector - only one. This was the top 20 for testing in PCM with real-life riders:
Gilbert
Sagan, Albasini
Thomas, Feline, Mathews, Valv, Kwiat, GVA
Kangert, Colbrelli, Swift, Dege, Gallopin, Dumoulin, EBH
Naesen, Ulisi, Stybar, Costa.
Gilbert with a finisseur attack ahead of Sagan and Albasini, Valv Kwiat and GVA looked good but were caught on the line by Thomas et al. Orgininally the group was most of those guys before Valverde attacked and pulled away those top guys.
So to me looks like an open race but very much focused on the puncheurs, but the best of the hillier cobbled guys with high FL could survive (think GVA duh, Tom David, Tsatevitch, etc.) but with only one cobbled sector it doesn't swing in their advantage - just keeps it interesting Really you need STA, FL and HI to win this one (as well as FTR and RES because they're awesome) and should give us a glimpse at the best-rounded puncheurs. My predictions for MG here would be an equally open and epic race. From Spilak to Sagan to Hermans to Kump to Jams to GVA to Per to Ponzi to EBH to Kangert to Van Staeyen to Tsatevitch to Roux (did you see Benelux? <3), all manner of puncheurs and daring attackers should have a chance in a very interesting race.
Again this was presented by me but all trekbmc's route, etc. I'm just lobbying for it to be the WC

Since I couldn't resist: Although I'd prefer Presov-Poprad, I made a few alternate NZ versions if that is not liked
Spoiler Queenstown: An interesting one given the main hill is gravel! Could finish in many different ways, currently goes flattish for 20km with a picteuresque small uphill sprint across the lake from the town. Starts in the other big tourist town of Wanaka, goes over the crown range from the easier (but not easy side) before going into Queenstown and then beginning the circuit, which includes two easier climbs (800m at 8%, 1.7km at 7%) and then the graveled climb (paved descent) which is 3/9km at a rough 8.8%! https://www.la-flamme-rouge.eu/maps/v...ack/199866
Dunedin: Begins in the city before taking in two Cat.2-ish climbs. Comes back into Dunedin and takes in a three-climb circuit: two short and steep, one longer. Then for the finish can go two ways: Go out to Signal Hill (3.5km at 7.5%) for the finale, or, if we really hate the riders, keep the decisiveness all on the circuit but have them finish the last 350m on Baldwin St, only the steepest street in the gosh darn world! https://veloviewer.com/segment/686663...win+Street

Christchurch: Similar to trek's one suggested above, but a lot more medium mountain-y, which could be a turn-off. Currently finishes in a short hill, but could finish on one of the climbs, a descent into Akaroa or maybe on a flat section. Currently isn't long enough but I could do circuits of the hills or in Christchurch, or possibly go back into Christchurch from Akaroa.
Is not a circuit race or finishing in a major city, but starts in the centre of Christchurch. Definitely not a WC route yet (designed it for my game) but could be if I or someone else adapted it: https://www.la-flamme-rouge.eu/maps/v...ack/198675

@jandal7 That Slovakian profile surely looks a lot interesting and I would surely like to see a race like that in MG in the future, but the likely problem is that the last WC was in Poland and the last Euro Champs in Slovakia. I believe it would be quite weird to have another race like that in these two countries so soon. Would not be against Sagan having a chance to go for it at home though. I really like that Queenstown variant a lot though, a gravel race sounds a lot cool.

Fair enough - I definitely think it should at least go into the calendar next year though

Like many others I think it is time for a hilly parcours. IMO WC routes should always have a certain aspect of "attacks likely to happen", and I don't think that is the case with cobbles, mountains and flats, to be honest.
So for me WC's should always be hilly in some form. Some seasons it could be a flat run-in, so we get a sprint of 50 riders, some years with a difficult finishing climb (long) which suits climbers reasonably well, but wouldn't rule out top puncheurs either, or a hilly parcours with 1 or 2 cobbled sections - with the race not being duted cobbled.
And of course then some times we could/should have a classical ardennes-type WC.
I really dislike a WC parcours with 180 riders sprinting it out on the line, I really dislike a WC with ups and downs in mountains all day and I really dislike a cobbled classic for a WC route. For a very specific reason. We already know the podium in advance. (Well maybe the sprints are a bit more random) - It is really no fun to know that Andy Schleck and Sam Bewley will win even before the race begins, and IMO we have been doing exactly that in recent years. That is, IMO, a huge mistake, even if we do want to give those riders a shot at winning.
We all know the AI from various races during the season, and there is absolutely no need to replicate the results of those. I want to come to the WC with an actual belief that something extraordinary can happen and not that Spilak will end 3-5th with Schleck winning or to see Bewley winning ahead og van Avermaet with a battle between 3 guys for the remaining podium spot. That really isn't in the best interest of the game for me.
So by saying all of these things, I obviously root for a hilly parcours - but whether it is an actual hilly parcours or something where the hilly sprinters (70+ HI) can win on a good day is a minor thing for me. As long as the race is open and 20+ riders can realistically win the race - then it's good for me.
