Who will be the next new Grand Tour champion and when?
Kiserlovski01
Only Fernández is a guaranteed no IMO.

Very rarely have Avenir winners gone on to dominate cycling though Pfft. Maybe once in a decade kind of stuff. Even Nairo's struggling to live up to his potential!

Also, until 2015, WT riders weren't able to participate in the race, and the great riders with 20 years are already in the WT

France desperately need a new hero so i would say that Bardet needs to step up to the mark Wink

I would add Soler, even if he has shown great skills last year, he'll be 25 at the end of the year. He is a good climber and a decent time-trialist, but lacks of regularity and doesn't seem to have a big margin of progression, maybe the future Spilak.

It's only the Tour win missing really. Three times on the podium, Giro win and two-time Vuelta winner, between several other big results (and he's only 27), he just had this rough year but he is living up to his potential.

How are some of the last couple of years' Avenir winners coming along? Taking the last 5 winners - Ruben Fernandez, MAL, Soler, Gaudu and Bernal - who wins a GT first? Do they win any at all?

Superman has already proved himself IMO, big mountain-stage guy, he just has the same struggles has Nairo (TT, Flat, due to his weight) and he does crash a lot. Gaudu is also living up so far, lets not forget he hasn't done any GT but Catalunya and Ardennes he was up there with the best. Soler and Fernandez are the same and Bernal I think it's to soon since no GT under his belt, but for week-long mountain races outside of WT, Sky may give him lead

MAL looked good when wasn't injured...maybe he is my choicePfft

Champ_Armstrong
SIIIVAKOOOOV for the win!

Arberg
Bernal

So will there be any new winners this year? We had a golden year in 2018 with two of them, but no one predicted either here Pfft

This sounds like something someone says right before they are proved wrong, but harking back to the earlier discussion above, I don't think Nairo will ever win Le Tour.

Would love it to be Chaves or, more fancifully, Bennett targeting the Vuelta, but I'm starting to believe those two are just too unlucky to do it. I think I've said all I will about Chaves' recovery, really hope he has a good Giro in service of Yates which would put him back on the path to his best that it looked like the first 9 days of the Giro last year was about to do.

But surely it's Roglic comes into the Giro as a big contender to become the actual answer to this thread, providing he hasn't overcooked his March-April form. Otherwise MAL could as well this year, not sure who else is a likely this year, still not quite sold on Adam Yates doing it this year but I could be proved wrong. Other than Bernal, who could have his GT breakthrough next month, and fittingly herald in the new stage racing dynasty as Sky become Ineos...

Wow, I'm sorry I even said that Sad

Don't think too many people will be sad imo. He won't win, but that's a different argument Pfft

So many wrong predictions Pfft

Well five new winners in a row, and no one had a clue Pfft

5 new winners in a row is quite extraordinary. Contador retired, Froome injured, Quintana declined, and NIbali so-so thereabout.. the age of the big four is definitely over. Hopefully, this merry mix of surprises and different winners continues and doesn't devolve into too much ineos and jumbo domination over the coming years.
