Scandinavia Open Road Race Preview
The course consists of flat start followed by a circuit with a climb and an extended descent which the riders will negotiate eleven times. The finish is also at the summit of the same climb on the twelfth time of asking. The course is tailor made for punchers as a rider with explosive climbing ability is likely to reign supreme. It will be interesting to see if any anyone attempts a solo attack from distance. Given the up and down nature of the attack, it might not be the easiest task for the (reduced) peloton to chase down an attack.
| Name | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Ponzi | 84 | 77 | 72 | 76 | 80 | | Bakelants | 84 | 81 | 78 | 75 | 78 | | Van Garderen | 82 | 78 | 75 | 72 | 79 | | Lutsenko | 81 | 76 | 73 | 70 | 81 | | Skujins | 83 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 76 | | Koretzky | 80 | 77 | 70 | 71 | 79 | | De Bie | 82 | 77 | 76 | 69 | 75 | | Gautier | 80 | 76 | 72 | 71 | 77 | | McCarthy | 81 | 80 | 75 | 70 | 74 | | Schreurs | 81 | 76 | 72 | 71 | 74 | | Pichon | 79 | 74 | 76 | 72 | 76 | | Bystrom | 79 | 75 | 72 | 67 | 76 | | Bilbao | 79 | 77 | 71 | 71 | 75 | | Anuar Aziz | 81 | 78 | 73 | 71 | 71 |
Ponzi and Bakelants start as top favourites for the win here. While the former is fresh off a win in Liege - Bastogne - Liege after an otherwise forgettable Ardenes campaign, the latter was super consistent, with three podium finishes in those races. Skuijns looks to be the biggest challenger and the Latvian will also be looking at improving his run so far this season.
Van Garderen, de Bie and Lutsenko are next in the bookmakers' standings for the win. Lutsenko has already tasted success this season, but his PT rival de Bie has not had the best results so far. Van Garderen has been very successful both in PCT races as well in PTHC races, against PT opponents.
Koretzky will be hoping he can improve on a dreadful Ardennes campaign. His team's early season has not been up to their high standards. They will need improvements soon if they are to get back to challenging for a third straight championship.
Defending champion Anuar Aziz is here to defend his title. Last year, this race did not feature PT teams and it is safe to say that it will a huge surprise if he is able to do so.
Strava with Pichon and Hugo - Boss with Bilbao are the two teams with a double-edged attack in this race. Bilbao, especially, will be hoping for a repeat of his Fleche Wallone result.
Other riders who can challenge for the stage win have been mentioned in the table above.
| Name | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | | Waeytens | 79 | 72 | 70 | 68 | 73 | | Dowsett | 80 | 74 | 69 | 67 | 71 | | Reichenbach | 79 | 76 | 69 | 73 | 69 | | Levarlet | 79 | 70 | 72 | 73 | 68 | | Klemme | 80 | 74 | 70 | 73 | 66 | | Izagirre | 79 | 73 | 72 | 69 | 63 |
Given the strength of the startlist, the riders mentioned above will do very well to achieve a high finish in this race. Nevertheless, they will be hoping to take advantage of any slip-ups from the favourites, and maybe even hope to make a late attack that survives. A few teams represented here could really use the points to improve their season.

Here without Ulissi to see if we can maybe grab any points. Molard, Lavery and Tanovitchii have no business being in the top 20 in a field like this, clearly, but my team is full of solid puncheurs in this race and hopefully this means that one of them manages to catch an interesting break or a lucky daily form.
Thanks Abhishek!

Well, this can be anything from 5th to nothing. Koretzky have been extremely poor this far, so I have to hope that he will make something here.
Decent depth, but I guess most do.

Obviously this has always been an important race for us. Now for the first time ever we actually have a shot at making a mark in the race.
A top 5 would be great seeing ad I really need someone to over perform slightly a bit...

Ah now I know why I didn't send Pichon to Vuelta, right.. we have a goal race here.
Bakelants has been very, very consistent this season with just one hiccup in Pais Vasco's final stage. However with just one win to show for so far. So let's see what's possible here against the usual suspects.

Bystrom was 24th here last year, hope he can do better this time...
Want more like two seasons agos result where Reimer came 3rd and Hoogerland (well, Bystrom this year then) took 9th.
But on the other hand , dont think there was any 84 hill guys that day |

I like it when there's no mention of Juul-Jensen.
In all seriousness, I can't expect much with that startlist. My biggest hope is that with a squadof capable puncheurs, they do something interesting during the race, regardless of results.

Tejay time again. No EBH is nice, but two PT stars instead. Fun.

From our perspective, it's good to see a good amount of stars fron the PT teams. Would of course have liked to be here ourself, but the bands didn't really work out that way. Should be interesting to follow, my money is on Bakelants to get a win here.

This has to be one of those mandatory races..
We did rather well in Fleche Wallon, hoping for a similar result here.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Really looking forward to seeing Ponzi race after the Liege Win. Startlist as strong you would expect. Good preview!

Crazy strong startlist, AA's got no chance of repeating his victory from last season. If he could even manage to slide into the top-15 that'd be an achievement really. It's certainly hard to look past Bakelandts and Ponzi here

Going to need a miracle here for Caruso, Zingle and Le Gac to come away with any points at all here given how strong the start list is.

Very content with a 3rd from Ponzi here. Always a lotteri with finishes like this. But what a team effort here! 4 in top 16 is great. Probably Career best for Mudarra too (not Mudorra ). First time my hilly debt paid off in PT!
Congratz knockout for the convincing Win and to shonak for yet another podium by mr.consistent. great report abdisheck!

Somehow totally missed this race here and then wasn`t aware my team is riding it. In fact missed it was PTHC even.
Nice to see my team doing great though. De Bie seems to have found his rythm finally and 4th behind those 3 is definitely okay. A bit surprised it`s Skujins winning over Ponzi and Bakelants, who yet again can`t win.
Thurau in 113th as 2nd best of the team is too low imo, probably a lot of work had to be done by him as well, in especially as Villella unfortunately had to abandon and hence missing lower points. Not his season yet, definitely far behind his 2016 performances.
Evonik and Hugo Boss in general with the huge depth points here, which is the difference to my team unfortunately.
Congrats knockout for the win and thanks Abhishek for the report! |

Yet another below-par performance by Koretzky... He will need to be A) Trained massively or B) Return to being a luxury domestique.

Question is if Koretzky really was below-par here.
More likely in comparison to last year when he likely overperformed a lot. 1-2 higher maybe would have worked but then lots of +1 +2 +3 puncheurs. |

I think we had a win goal here so it's super bad that we lost out on the win here. This could have meant some serious cash for next year. Alas, is what is. Gratz to our buddies over at Evonik, Skuijns with a so-so season so it's particurlarly nice for them. Bakelants is really consisted which is probably what we need the most to stay in the pt but a win now and then would surely be favorable as well. Not surprised that the race ended in a bunch sprint up the climb, at least in this way Vanendert and Pichon scored as well. Very good race for us albeit we failed our sponsor goal. Thanks for the quality report once again, Abi.
