Dutch Food Valley Classic Preview
Not the 'flattest' flat classic on the calendar but a race that should be for the sprinters no doubt. The distance might become a factor too. The PCT teams will be looking at this HC race as an opportunity for their sprinters to prove their worth.
| Name | FLA | SPR | ACC | | Mohs | 75 | 83 | 82 | | Cavendish | 73 | 83 | 81 | | Goss | 74 | 82 | 78 | | Vantomme | 73 | 82 | 78 | | Guillén | 67 | 81 | 82 | | Itami | 75 | 80 | 82 | | Guardini | 72 | 80 | 82 | | Reinhardt | 71 | 79 | 84 | | Kupfernagel | 74 | 80 | 80 | | Keukeleire | 72 | 80 | 79 | | Drapac | 71 | 80 | 79 | | Castañeda | 71 | 80 | 79 | | Lay | 73 | 79 | 81 | | Scully | 74 | 79 | 80 | | Bouhanni | 74 | 80 | 77 | | Afewerki | 73 | 79 | 80 | | Van der Sande | 75 | 79 | 79 | | Stepniak | 72 | 79 | 79 | | Chen | 74 | 79 | 78 | | Vanoverschelde | 72 | 80 | 75 |
Arguably, two of the three best sprinters in the division, Mohs and Cavendish start as top favourite in this race. Defending champion Lo Cicero and his Valio team are absent. Goss and Vantomme are likely to be the other strong contenders for the podium.
Itami, Guardini and Kupfernagel make up the two star contenders for this race. They are slightly less powerful than the previously mentioned quartet, but are quite capable themselves to take the win, if it's their day.
Reinhardt is the fastest man out of the blocks, which might prove useful but he might run out of steam early if the pace gets too hot.
Guillen could be a challenger but it remains to be seen whether he can keep fresh over the long distance. Nakhon Ratchasima Trophy winner Damion Drapac should also be taken seriously as a contender.
Bouhanni and Vanoverschelde are strong sprinters but lower acceleration might prove to be their bane in this race.
Also look out for World Cycling Center's duo of Castaneda and Lay mixing it up with the big guns at the finish. They are quite capable.
The other contenders for this race are mentioned in the table above.
Spoiler Last Name | First Name | Team | Kupfernagel | Danilo | Berg Cycles | Portela | Marcio | Berg Cycles | Santos | Bruno | Berg Cycles | Balloni | Alfredo | Berg Cycles | Antunes | Amaro | Berg Cycles | Vilela | Ricardo | Berg Cycles | Brandão | Jóni | Berg Cycles | Baska | Erik | Berg Cycles | Scully | Tom | Compal-Merida | Sergent | Jesse | Compal-Merida | Chen | Libin | Compal-Merida | Li | Wen Hao | Compal-Merida | Fominykh | Daniil | Compal-Merida | Rive | Dmitriy | Compal-Merida | Oka | Atsushi | Compal-Merida | Chen | Chien Liang | Compal-Merida | Afewerki | Elias | Eritel - Looks like a tough field for Itami to challenge for the win, but if he finishes outside the Top 10 I'd call that a disappointment, although the distance may hurt him here too.

I'm not expecting an absolute top result, but there's no reason for another flop like in Nakhon and Betonexpressz and honestly I'd like him to make up for those a little.
Should be good at least to see Mohs vs. Cavendish for the first time in a while, another win for Poland? Thanks Abhishek.

Hoping for a podium here, we've got a pretty decent team here so hopefully Ji goes into beast mode and can set Goss up on the finale. Have a feeling Vantomme might upset the big guns here though.
Thanks for the preview!

Hopefully Bouhanni can fight for at least a Top 10 here but wouldn't be too surprised if he barely makes it into the Top 20.

Ouch, despite the clash with Philly, Pelucchi can't make the preview. Let's hope he can surprise again and top 10. Hoping for a tough race!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Sprinter classics have not been out strongest setting, so I think it will be hard to get a win. Strong startlist with a lot of strong contenders, where Guardini and Stepniak need to help Mohs and not be an inconvenience. Hope for a win obviously, but will be surprised if we do

I complain every year that this race has to be renamed to Veenendaal - Veenendaal to satisfy my ego . First time I'll be able to attend my homerace in the MG universe.
Anyway, big and important race for us. Top ten goal should be within reach with Drapac's previous performance.

Really just want to see Afewerki getting involved in the sprint - and a Top 20 performance would be just fine.

Looking forward to watching another Mohs vs Cav shootout but with plenty of strong riders on the startlist it could go any way.
Not the strongest leadout train for Cav so might have some issues with positioning.
Thanks for the preview AbhishekLFC, hope there is enough action to report on.

Huge result for Kraftwerk! A 1-2 in a HC classic it's just unbelievable. Congrats D2B!

Massive result for Kraftwerk! Congrats D2B!
Finally, on the third try Vantomme sticks it with a decent result, 5th place is a very nice result, especially when Sobota had to abandon.
Thank you very much for a fantastic report Abhishek1

Brilliant result by Drapac, could've been third imo but sixth is a great result! And the toughest goal of the season achieved! All in all, a great home race for me.
Thanks AbhishekLFC on the report, I could spot some landmarks along the road. Congrats D2B and his Kraftwerk Machine, the locals are still talking about your great performance.

Wow, massive result for Kraftwerk. Huge congrats Dave
Seeing the, based on stats and expectations, somewhat poor season for Mohs so far, I'm kind of glad that I dropped having a top sprinter in Guarnieri. Fourth place is obviously not a failure, but for danny's sake, I hope he'll do even better later on in the season.

Not the best result here, but it was a tough field. Pelucchi shouldn't have been on the wrong side of that "split" though. Grats Kraftwerk for a great result!

Wow!
Usually, 1-2s in PCM are due to the AI messing up, but I'd argue this rather was very well played by the AI. That's what the other teams get for not challenging with a sprint train of their own.
It reminded me of Lampaert in the Vuelta or obviously Pöstlberger's Giro ride, so who says PCM can't be realistic Congrats dave.

From my own experience with Napolitano a few seasons back, it's not really worth having the top sprinter in the division. Sprints are a total lottery, and if you go in expecting to win each one then you'll inevitably be disappointed. Napo finished 4th in the individual rankings for me yet had a few races where he was out of the top 5 and even top 10 - investing heavily in a sprinter is just setting yourself up for frustration |
