Hi there,
since Cyanide dumped the old Hill/Mountain stat formula since PCM 16 I wanted to ask you guys here which is the PCM with the best gameplay.
My first PCM was 2006 and this one was already pretty good in my opinion gameplay wise, sadly I have the feeling now that every new PCM gets worse year after year.
I haven't played in the years 2010-2012 so I'm really interested in the opinions of real PCM geeks like you are.
Greetings

It's funny you mention the hill stat.
I don't really understand wether it has any importance in the game right now. Won't MON and ACC do what HIL was supposed to?
Before, I saw a use for punchers, now they just seem like useless, bad climbers - unless they're Valverde'esqe.
Edit: I've only really played 15, 16, 17 and while I really enjoy PCM17 atm, 16 was a bit "meh" and I remember liking 15 more, so I voted 15. |

The results will not say anything, as i expect that more than half of people only played newer editions. PCM 17 with unfuctional stat formula being in the lead says a lot about this.
But for me (played editions 2007-2016), the PCM 11 and PCM 2007 are cut above the rest, with PCM11 being the pinnacle of cycling management game that actually works.

How can people like PCM07 though? It was actually a serious downgrade from PCM06.

The main editions I've played are 11, 12 & 17, and to me, 17 has been the most enjoyable, and I've had the most realistic races.
From my memory, earlier editions were full of buggy, ridiculous results, and dot was far too overpowered, while this year it's seemed very smooth, logical and functional, and I can actually attack! Puncheurs win hilly stages, climbers win mountain stages, and spirnters win flat stages, with the occasional breakaway thrown in (a few too many on flat stages is my only complaint).
Just my experience of course, I've read many people's accounts of bad experiences with the game, I'm just putting my hand up as an example of someone who played previous editions but voted for 17.

PCM 11 was great, it didn't have any noticeable gameplay issues in any kind of race. Any PCM after or before that had either annoying gameplay bugs or was just too outdated and lacking under certain points of view.
Before PCM 05 for instance, Zabel could win the Tour if you were good enough, and there weren't differences between mountains and hills. PCM 06 was already pretty good, but if you played it today you would definitely notice some unrealistic stuff, and the engine didn't improve much until PCM 10, until it got refined in PCM 11.
Take PCM 12, all mountain stages basically finished in bunch sprints - similar behaviour as PCM 16, in PCM 13 the resistance stat didn't work at all etc.
It seems like after a certain point in the PCM saga there's always something holding it back.

I have not played 17 (and have no plans to do it), but how the game is playable with hill stat only taken into account with more than 85 effort?
and dot overpowered, it is only natural, because it was only way to actually control the riders effort km after km, so it was reward for patient players, that are not playing on x4 or x8...

I've read everything about the 85 effort and took it into account, but it still seems every hilly stage has the strongest punchy riders up front and not the pure climbers. I think maybe the latest patch fixed some stuff, because since then the complaints seem to have died down a lot. I'll admit I'm yet to try a hilly stage with a Gilbert or Albasini type who has a low MO stat.. We'll see how I go when I eventually do.
As for dot, yeah makes sense, I just like being able to attack with attacking riders, like in real life, and not just have to sit there on the dot while all the other contenders are attacking.
All I can say is I'm enjoying this edition very much, and have yet to have issues with gameplay. They'll happen soon I'm sure, but until then, very few complaints from me.

I've been playing the series since the first edition back in 2001. I only play career mode.
Gameplay constantly, but slowly, improved untill PCM2007 (despite loosing the desired race program for leaders from PCM2006 that was great, and unfortunately never got back).
I sticked to PCM2007 (2008-2009-2010 were a real shit) until PCM11, which is for me the best edtion so far and the one i'm still playing.
Since PCM12 it has been a continuos deception year after year. |

PCM 2011 by far.
You should not have put 2017 in the poll, since every time these polls come up, several people will take the latest edition no matter what.
PCM desperatly needs a new developer, or at least a new engine |

Cyanide should just team up with the guys behind the Football Manager series. There's enough similarities that they could pretty much build the game on top of the FM UI and UI+smart scheduling tools is really all we need. |

I've been playing since PCM 11 with the exception of PCM 17, and have played Cycling Manager 4 as well. PCM 11 is my favorite and lacked game breaking bugs, but surely it wasn't without it's issues. The mountain AI was always stupid and dotting was the only way to ride mountains.
Like Matt said, every single PCM game has had a major flaw holding it back. I liked PCM 13, but every mountain rider attacked at the same time at the bottom of every final mountain. It was really annoying. Every PCM has a crappy AI bug like this, and they never seem to be able to fix it. Across all of it, they still don't understand how to make attacking on mountains work. They've had so many years. That's why I didn't buy it this year.
I think everybody favors the edition that got them into the game though, so just take this all with a grain of salt.

I've been incredibly entertained on mountain stages in this version. Riders attack left and right and I've yet to win a stage where I wasn't the one to open up.
This is on hard. |

That isn't very encouraging either. They always go one way or the other, it needs to be a balance. Not every stage is the same in cycling. I've never played PCM or seen gameplay from a PCM version that consistently showed a proper combination or attrition from pace and attacking on mountains.

Well. Don't take that as a game flaw. I'm pretty confident I can guarantee you that I'm not one of the best to ever play this game.
The amount of times I feel like I've managed my stages perfectly is maybe once per season. I "only" have 400 hours logged in total of the last three editions of the game. Just sharing my experiences that all kinds of attacks happens and wins. Froome is annoyingly good at getting set back, but catch up at the end. |

I have played PCM 13-17 and thoroughly enjoyed every edition with the exclusion of PCM 14. PCM 17 for me has the best mountain gameplay of them all which I enjoy the most, but for overall gameplay, PCM 15 has to be the best in my opinion, in fact I have 850 hours on that game although PCM 13 isn't far behind. PCM 16 was a bit meh with gameplay. |

PCM16 for me by far, especially for the breakaway and classics AI - 17 took a huge downstep with that, cobbles are unplayable with 17

tried 14 and 17, and I found that 17 has more realistc races and results, tbh with 14 I had great fun and it was enjoyable, but I think that 17 has great potential
