Devastating news absolutely. It makes me speechless knowing just yesterday he was fighting with some of the best riders in the world, doing what he liked and did best. And just hours later a disaster like this... it's just sad, can't express the emotion.
For me he represented the era of Italian cyclists that are slowly vanishing alongside Basso and Cunego that made for some epic and legendary rides. He has been given an opportunity to lead in the Giro so many years later, and showed great quality once again it felt like he was ready to lead the team to a great result.

Just terrible and once again this happens too often. Cycling safety is a joke in most countries and it's about time for big changes.

I'm shocked.
This came really out of a sudden, as many said just yesterday he finished a race and now he's suddenly not here anymore. I think that I can barely even imagine the pain his family suffers now.
Rest in peace a great and as his work for his colleagues the last years show, also selfless person.

I don't even know what to say. These kind of things just don't seem real. He was just racing and performing so well, literally Yesterday. I'm beyond words.

These things just happens sometimes. And unfortunately, he was hit hard..........
I actually feel like I know Michele a bit, watched him race hundreds of time. Thats why its even more sad when he passes away, especially because we all know how good of a person he is. |

It honestly seems surreal, especially because he was literally just racing the other day. Unfortuantely though this wasn't the first incident of this sort, so something must be done to protect cyclists on the road, I think.

Not wrong about cyclist safety. Because the stigma around cyclists, people automatically become hostile and look for arguments and responses. Motor cyclists are idiots too, which is a suprise as we are both on 2 wheels. |

That's not true, have you ever cycled in another country? Like the Netherlands or something? I'm not going to say accidents can't happen there, but I'd feel a lot safer.

Firstly, I am also extremely shocked to hear about his passing.
Replying to your statement: in the Netherlands everyone rides the bike, the country has special riding lanes for cyclists. So it's naturally safer. Though you just always have to watch out in traffic whether in the car or on the bike. So sad. |

Denmark is a huge cycling country as well, but riding your racer bike (especially fast which pros does) increases the likelihood of it happening.
Look, Im not denying that the safety is/can be a problem, just saying that no matter what you do, stuff like this WILL continue to happen.
And now back for Michele instead of this useless debate anyways, nobody cares man, Michele fucking Scarponi just died. |

Well exactly, that's my whole point. A rider has died and you just say "hey, these things happen". People do care about this because cyclists shouldn't get killed at this rate. Infrastructure, road quality, car drivers not giving a shit about cyclists, etc are all important issues that need to be addressed, in some countries more than others. I'm not going to start with a "what if" here, but don't make it seem so trivial that a cyclist dies.

Oh come on. Seriously.
I ride my bike, on average, 400 kilometres s week. Please don't pull this crap on me. This hurt me deeply, I've cried today, Michele is one of the nicest guys of the peloton.
But whatever you like it or not, no matter how much you improve safety, there is always a risk when you ride. A maniac CAN always run you down.
It actually really hurts me you are willing to go down this route and make it about me being a bad person or whatever, it really does. So typical. |

I don't think Riis is trivialising anything. He's just saying that you could bring in as many safety rules and regulations as you want but accidents will still happen. Riding a bike amongst vehicles which weigh tons and travel x3 your speedhas dangers wherever you are.
