The Hell of the North, while the giants of the road battle it out at the front, the real heroes stall on the Trouée d'Arenberg, lag in precarious winds and allow other riders to break their time consuming falls in the ultimate battle of survival but slightly worse survival than everybody else.
Past 10 Winners:
2007: Evert Verbist
2008: Mathew Hayman
2009: Michael Friedman
2010: Jos van Emden
2011: Andreas Schillinger
2012: Bernhard Eisel
2013: Christopher Juul-Jensen
2014: Bradley White
2015: Dylan van Baarle
2016: Luka Mezgec
Obviously a couple surprising things in the list, Hayman of course as last year's winner (or loser, depending on your point of view) was the Lanterne Rouge back in 2008 and Dylan van Baarle, 4th in the recent Tour of Flanders was last not two years ago - anybody can take a stab at this prestigious title. Also noticeable is none of the home French riders, will they break the curse this year?
Favourites:
Reigning champion Luka Mezgec returns this year with high hopes and is a massive favourite to take the crown once again, he'll face tough competition though, Andreas Schillinger will be supporting little-known rider Peter Sagan but the 2011 winner may have his eyes on the prize once again, with his experience he looks set for a strategic race.
An obvious challenge is Team Dimension Data's double threat, Last place a week ago in the Tour of Flanders, Tylar Farrar and 2012 winner here Bernhard Eisel, will mean the South African team has two cards to play - 1 to puncture while the other marks his opponents as he takes the wind for them?
Some of you are probably thinking at this point, who would I be not to mention the superteam - Movistar, with a squad tightly focussed on this objective, it's their race to lose, or, ah win I guess. Jorge Arcas, Daniele Bennati and Héctor Carretero should lead the team I guess but with so many cards to play you can't count out any member of this team, despite their tactical fails in the past.
Chinese rider Meiyen Wang has little experience on these roads but he knows where to ride in the pack and is sure to stall well coming into the narrow cobblestone sectors. British hopes rest on Jonathan Dibben but there's some doubt on whether he'll finish the race after an unsuccessful attempt at the Tour of Flanders. Also Ruslan Tleubayev seems to have had a very decent lead-up to this race, 149th at Scheldeprijs, 121st at Dwars Door Vlaanderen is promising.
Fortuneo has a couple interesting options too and the French team will want to make the most of them at home, Franck Bonnamour and Ewann Corbel are little-known but pack a real slip on the cobbles.
Obviously there's a long list of other names to look out for here. Juraj Sagan is always unpredictable but has shown potential for a stunning performance from a long way out on Sunday and Spanish youngster Mikel Aristi is in uncertain form without racing for nearly a month but has shown some potential.
With such a packed startlist, I'm sure nobody can wait to see the Arête de la Course this Sunday!

I'm going with an unknown French rider from Cofidis. His is same something like Laporte. I don't know if someone knows him.
I heard that he is compared to the Slovak champion, Juraj Sagan. Didn't know why until i saw that both had only 1 pro win, so now i think that the comparision is fair

Juraj has become a decent rider actually. It took him some time, but he is respectable.
Another rider which isn't respectable aint no more is Tyler Farrar, the most overrated sprinter 5 years ago, he will finish last. |

Hi,
That certainly it isn't. Don't get ahead of yourself now. |

It's a procedure, when it is not used everyone talks shit, so in my opinion it isn't a thing to blame.
