Wooooaoooo Brambilla work as hard as those guys

That's an entirely different thing. That was a group effort. No one rider would have been able to do that on their own.
Maybe they could have a "Breakaway Group of the Year" Award too

Bjarne Riis and his "team" have takes over Team BMS BIRN, who will be on the WWT next season.

Which certainly wasn't the peloton of that particular day

Dude, he won freaking Roubaix from the break at 37 y/o while being injured the entire winter. It was not like he was wheel sucking the whole way either, he really was a force that race. |

Who is fanboy of Boonen and who is not matters the most in this discussion.
I agree with Riis that maybe the most impressive rides of the year can go to Wellens, Sagan or Nibbles for mentioned races/stages.
I would give the upper hand to Wellens, for such a mad destruction during the insane weather conditions.

Can't believe the two best rides of this year have been ignored, Laporte crushing Sagan on Ventoux and Ait El Abdia in the WC a close second, no other ride can compare.

I wish people would stop mentioning the broken arm. First of all, the arm was completely healed. Secondly, it gives him an advantage that he is more fresh then all the other riders who are down to their 4th or 5th cobbled classic in 15 days.
Hyaman deserves credit for winning the race, but that's it. The reason this was the most exciting Roubaix we had in ages was Tom Boonen and his attacking from way out. Well done to Hayman for being in the early break, following when Boonen, Vanmarcke, Stannard and Bo Hagen got there, going with Boonen when the deciding attack happened and finishing it in the sprint. But that happened in many races. I wouldn't call him a bigger outsider than Vansummeren was, or O'Grady was, and he's definitely a more expected winner then Geusdon.
How many people would remember Hayman's win in 20 years if it wasn't for Boonen's agressive riding?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Duh,if Boonen and QS havdn't gone all out Canc or Sagan would have attacked and won the race in a much boring way.
Boonen and QS made the race.
@Shonak I just don't understand what is impressive with Quintana in Formigal. He followed Contador and did some occasional work when realizing that they will definitely stay away.Schleck did the same on Telegraphe-Galibier by following Contador on TDF 2011 Stage 19. |

I still wait for Paul to tell that it was Martin who launched Boonens attack and thus he had the most amazing ride of the year

No no, it's ok, I'll be quiet. Just don't send Paul here

Actually, I think Erviti said that Hayman was already resting up in the breakaway and ofc Hayman did no work as soon as Martin & Boonen came from behind. Even in the finale, Hayman was by far the rider who did the least work, by far!
Naturally he only won because he was in the break of the day and not in the Boonen-selection group, which actually diminishes the epicness of his ride. This does not dimish his win, but it diminishes his ride (it makes sense what I'm saying if you think shonakian-way)

I see your argument and it can definitely be made, but the way you phrased it at first made it sound like Hayman won it by accident and it was absolutely ridiculous etc. I just don't think it is that black/white, thats all - and If I would have to give it to one, it would be Hayman. |

No-one wants to argue for Berhane's Top15 at the Worlds? Or Ait el Abdi's Top25 at the same race? GVA's olympics win was pretty damn impressive as a ride as well. I wouldn't give it to anyone's ride in Roubaix. Epic race yes, but no-one had that truly special ride that was above all others of the entire year

They both rode equally amazing/World Class rides. Very different rides due to their abilities and the circumstances they were in, but you could argue both rode as well as they have in their entire careers over a single day.
Ultimately though, Hayman won. An excellent ride capped with the victory beats an excellent ride capped by a disappointing second place. It's as simple as that as far as I can see.
Also, Hasn't Boonen won enough in his career? Let Hayman have his day in the sun

What about Jack Bobridge winning the Aussie champs by nearly 3 minutes?
Or Sagan defending his World Championship title with practically no team support?
