Yeah, like he did in Tour de France 2013. Wink

I think we are glorifying him too much here. If what many say are true, that he does not care about a GT podium, then you would expect NOTHING less than an all out attack before Aitana on Sky/Movistar. I really, really doubt we will see that. Chances are it will be somewhat half-arsed once he realises chances are pretty low, but can say he at least tried which many of his die hard fans will cling on to. Pfft

How can you compare those 2 scenarios even?

Apparently you have already forgot that Contador's attitude of racing provided Quintana with a big enough lead to presumably win the Vuelta. Without Contador's all out-antics, you'd probably die a million deaths today each time Froome accelerates or comes back.

Podium should be secured today and would be a solid result when you look at the months since Tour de France and the Vuelta specifically. I don't think an all out attack is necessary because he already had some goes in this race. If he feels good he can still try to take control of the race and see where it goes, but it's not on him to provide entertainment today.

Yeah that would be a very fine result for him. Also possibly Cannondale's best result this year, ahead of Rigo's 7th at Giro at least.

At least he doesn't lose the Tour by not attacking ala Quintana.Quintana lost 2015 Tour completely because of his cowardness. He also waited in the Pyrenees this year were he loked to me much stronger than Froome but completely wheelsucked and even ended up losing time. Then,he was much weaker in the other mountain stages because of his illness.

Well I'm over the moon right now - Chaves could launch an assault and I'd dearly love another podium but if I'm brutally honest 4th wouldn't be undeserved for him or Contador. But:

Unfortunately Samu Sanchez is out but it is just another boost for George Bennett to be 11th on stage 19 in your fist GT GC attempt is something, to do it after Le Tor and fairly unexpectedly after planning to be a domestique for Kruisiwjk is something more. His and Formolo's rides could go either way for that 10th place but either way it's one of the best Kiwi Cycling performances ever, certainly best ever GC result. He got into the top 15 early on and has just kind of... stayed there, much like other GC guys. Proud of him Grin
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

No, I haven't. A stage for the ages, definitely.

All I oppose is the notion that Contador is this kind half-god who doesn't care about podiums what so ever. I think its true to some extent and he is definitely the most aggressive rider out there, all I say is for that notion to be true, he will have to bury himself completely if he indeed only care about the win. Don't you agree?

Matt: Its decently comparable. Contador rode for the podium in 2013 when he realised he wasn't strong enough to win.

Contador had his worst year ever in 2013. He rode against the best Froome ever and arguably the best Quintana - at least definitely the smartest.

He was 4 minutes and a half behind after the last TT, with 3 more stages left he's now 3 minutes and a half behind with 1 stage left, and he's riding against definitely not the best Froome and not the best Quintana either. He showed he was not riding for the podium already as soon as he attacked on Sunday, how is that comparable to 2013?

By far their best result this year and while that in itself is disappointing I think a top 5 is more than they would normally hope for from this race.

Seems like Elissonde misjudged the first climb quite a lot.

The situations were obviously different - there is no denying that, but he is still a long way down at this point which makes it comparable with a minimal chance of winning.

So you obviously think he doesn't care about the podium and will go all out. I don't - lets see. Wink

He has to gain 4 minutes on Quintana. He doesn't need to bury himself, he needs a miracle. That said, he can still attack and see how it goes. I just find it disrespectful to pretend he does only half-assed attacks when he has been bonking all over the place and still went for the win rather than give and admit defeat in previous stages. Whatever comes up today, I'm sure he will try his best, whatever that is atm.

(Again, I'm pretty content with a podium for him. No shame in losing to Quintana and Froome, especially given the circumstances of le Tour and Vuelta. This year has began great but somewhere along the road, he definitely lost the spark.. hope he finds it next year again)

You can argue its disrespectful and it probably is, but he has done it before on a couple of occasions. Maybe that wasn't the right wording I used.

There is no shame in it at all. But the point was I simply don't think he doesn't care about a podium - he is also realistic.
