Can't believe Cavendish is winning this. Sure, he got a lot TDF stage wins, but only 1 point jersey and aside from that 1 Milan - San Remo, he's deperately missing sprinter classics.

Only Vattenfall Classics is a pure sprinters' classic.

Well, he never managed to win that one for starters. But I'm also counting stuff like Gent-Wevelgem, Paris-Brussels, Paris-Tours and yes, Milan - San Remo. If the race is often won by a sprinter, it can be considered a sprinters classic. The fact that Cavendish doesn't win those, means that he is a very limited sprinter. In terms of pure speed and acceleration he's amongst the best, but that doesn't mean much if you're already dropped or exhausted when the sprint begins.

Cav is a pure sprinter, whilst guys like Degenkolb(who won MSR and G-W is more of a classics guy. Also, its the way, how Cav won his races. He was mostly a whole bike length before his opponents and he could go from 300m(or even 350 at some races) out and still win. People forget that. Also he is a guy who takes risks, which in my opinion, makes him even better. And one thing you can't deny is, that he can work his ass off for his team-mates. Greipel can do the same. I've never seen Kittel work for anybody. Also 2agan is a very good team-mate in that point.

Is this poll the best sprinter or best pure sprinter, though?

Darrigade and Maeretans (also maybe Guimarde or Kelly?) were the type of sprinters who could win in any type of race and I'd still pick Darrigade (or Maeretans maybe) as the best sprinter just for their ability to win a sprint on stages with lots of different terrains.

Darriagade is a little lacking in sprinters classics wins, but he always peaked for the tour so that's hard to say.

The poll says "best sprinter", not "fastest man". I would be ok with Cav winning the latter.

I'm glad to see Gent-Wevelgem mentioned, cause it has been won by Cipo 3x and Adbou also won once, seeing as they are Cav's closest competitors here. It's true we had a few special editions like the most recent one where Paolini won, but the course hasn't changed that much over the last 10 years, it's still a sprinter's race in normal circumstances.

TMM's points about Scheldeprijs and Kuurne are valid though. But yeah, those are easier races compared to the WT sprinter classics.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Well, tough choice really. Especially since sprints changed so much for the last 25 years. When Abdou raced there were no sprint trains and everyone was going alone in search for positioning and according to his own words a sprint lasted for the whole final kilometer!!! The first one to use a lead-out was the Mario Cipollini, who used it to beat the Tashkent Terror. I don't see how they can be compared so my vote goes the one I like the most - Abdou.

Make the poll in ten years again and Gaviria will be the winner. www.ugly-smilies.de/data/ugly.gif Wink

I'm going to vote very old school and choose Pélissier, the guy had a very short period at the top, but he made the most out of it.

Did you stop trolling? Awesome Grin

I'd agree with you based on the last few years, but if you look at the past, there's bigger names out there in my opinion, though it's always hard to compare generations Smile

I have to agree with you; Abdu"push'em"ov, was a good sprinter despite the outrage and crashes that he caused (think Paris in 1991).
