Where Am I? - GeoGuessr: R5R
jseadog1
Just spent about an hour on it. Tried to narrow it down to the right country, which I think I did, and then after searching a bit more gave up and clicked a random spot near water and mountains hoping to get in the middle of the pack. That round 1 bonus gives me some comfort

Happy with that third place. Will be hard to keep it though after this one!

^ Sounds like your playing it different to me: I'm just going on instincts/what I already know. Wink

Nice first round

Yeah, looks like Photobucket is down for maintenance. At least it is for me. Should be back up in a bit.

I know a lot of people are saying it's hard. That's the idea. The first round was clearly too easy so I have to do this to split everyone up in the standings. This will probably be the hardest round of this season.

Incredibly, two people have given virtually the same answer and another two are barely 10km apart.

Round 2 Results

So, a much, much harder challenge here, verging on the impossible in fact. The main clue here was the stop sign on the right, which clearly most of you either missed or thought nothing of. It says Pare, which is only used in South America and some Caribbean countries. The only other clue of note is the rugged coastline in the distance and the fact that they drive on the right (Australia?!). Here's everyone's answers:

Miguel98Huelva, Spain
MarcovdwPontevedra, Spain
Froomedog99Lagos, Portugal
Croatia14Antofagasta, Chile
emre99Marmaris, Turkey
jseadog1Ubatuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil
BjartnePorto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
The RiderSheet Harbor, Nova Scotia, Canada
Kiserlovski01Almeria, Spain
SelwinkFisterra, Spain
Matt17brLauwersoog, Netherlands
lakebeachUbatuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil
AbhishekLFCGeelong, Victoria, Australia
PeterRyderIlhéus, Bahia, Brazil
jihardyMelaleuca, Tasmania, Australia
LuxemburgerJurilovca, Romania
trekbmcPonce, Puerto Rico
DiCycAntalya, Turkey

jandal7 was the only first round participant not to enter, keeping him firmly lodged at the bottom of the table. Incredibly, jseadog1 and lakebeach, tied for the lead after Round 1, thought it was on either side of Ubatuba in Brazil. Marcovdw and Selwink were also just down the road from each other in Northern Spain. But, where was it?

Spoiler

Yep, it was that hard! Just outside Queule, Chile, just north of Valdivia. How far away was everyone?

Well, Croatia14 was the only person in Chile and, despite being miles away in the north of the very long country, he wins the round by almost 500 kilometres. After a decent first round, he moves himself into a good position with 100 points. The early lead now moves to lakebeach, after beating his rival jseadog1 by just 26km. Bjartne beat them both in Porto Alegre to take second and keep himself right up in the standings, as well as taking the lead in the overall distance standings. PeterRyder and trekbmc were the only others with the right idea, the latter's gamble of Puerto Rico was not a bad idea at all.

As for the rest, the bizarre guesses of Australia were still closer than Europe, so actually don't do too badly. jihardy in 8th place despite being 10000km away proves how hard this was! The wooden spoon for this round goes to Luxemburger, with eastern Romania a staggering 13809 kilometres from the correct answer.

Round 3 will be a bit easier (Pfft) and will begin in the next 24 hours. I may try and get it up today as hopefully most of you will be free to do it tomorrow. I'm aiming to finish the season next Sunday now.

I'm quite sure "Pare" is also used in Spain and Portugal on some regions. Pfft

FroomeDog99
Pare is used in Portuguese, which was my basis for thinking it was in Portugal or Brazil. Didn't occur to me that other languages may also use it Pfft

Ah well, considering I'm only spending 5 minutes on a guess I'm doing OK.

trekbmc
Thought Peurto Rico would be a good guess but really had no clue except somewhere in the Americas. Happy really still to be somewhat near the top. Pfft Grin

Thanks Brewers, I'm really enjoying this game. Grin

Fuck me how did you guys even see there was written pare on it? I just didn't bother and assumed it was stop, rather focusing on the other signal and the shade of red of both of 2 which brought me to Wikipedia in a page showing the comparison of signals in the various Europe countries. After comparing the shade of red and the thickness of the characters in there I was so sure it was Netherlands and thus proceeded to look for a place near the sea because that was just sea. There also were Hills but they could have been anywhere again. So just looked for the closest place near the sea and to Jesley's University. It was a good hour and a half of master guessing work. I felt like God when i found out it was Netherlands and thinking about how much I was going to show off my undeniable awesomeness later on.

To then find out I was 13000 kms out of the actual location.

Lol how the f*ck did you get in Lauwersoog?

There also were Hills

So let's go for the Netherlands then. They are known for the hills Pfft

I'm proud I at least managed to read Pare. My brilliant conclusions lead me to think it was Spain. That it would be South America did not occur to me.
