News in January
roturn
The news is from just 5 days ago. So after Cult and after PCT license was given to Stölting alone.

You are right that cycling in Germany is no longer as big as in the T-Mobile days.
But it`s on a up again. Giant is already in the WT and with Bora Argon 18 and Stölting there are additional 2 PCT teams this season. This is by far the most for ages.

Riders such as Greipel, Degenkolb, Kittel, Martin are the new face of German cycling. Young talents such as Kämna, Herklotz, Buchmann already on their way.

Germany`s biggest public TV ARD is broadcasting the Tour de France live again, which is possibly the biggest needed step for German sponsors to have bigger interest. Then next year the Tour de France starts in Germany. Cycling definitely on a good way here and this also will bring some more sponsors into the sport for sure.

There's no shortage of German sponsors at all in the peloton. Canyon, Cube and Focus are all ridden bike brands. Canyon is even a title sponsor of one of the biggest womens teams. Schwalbe are an often see components supplier. Lidl was big news in its sponsorship of Etixx this season having previously been involved in the sport. And there's more beyond that. It's no-where near as bad or barren a situation as many believe

that´s wrong, it was told in an interview with radsportnews.com just a few days ago...

I´m fully with roturn here:

- Bora is much more likely to join the WT than Stölting
- please don´t make one out of two teams
- there is a huge step forward in German cycling in terms of tv-coverage, sponsors, talents...and Germany loves to hype talents (like Herklotz, who isn´t that good in my opinion though), with the amount of Junior TT talent that could be amazing for the rehabilitation of cycling
- riders like Degenkolb and their medial behaviour are given lots of cheers for their offense against doping

but there is still big trouble with many Germans still thinking all cyclists are dopeheads...sadly Germany has no one for the Olympics Road Race, that could give cycling a boost in Germany

in other terms: why the fuck did Rusvelo get a wildcard? for Androni this must be a huge disappointment

It was expected - Androni got 2 doping strikes and got suspended fo 30 days. Now that I've thinked about that, why Southeast are even allowed since they have a well documented doping record. Pozzato however is still a big draw for the RCS and the fact that Southeast has won Coppa Italia makes their wildcard solid.

Let's not forget that Gazprom has business interests in Italy.

They won Coppa Italia, which automatically grants them a spot in RCS' races.

I don't get the issue with RusVelo. Wildcards are rarely ever given on pure sporting terms, perhaps never. Gazprom and RCS have some sponsorship links, Makarov on the UCI being very friendly with RCS, plus probably some money to the 'struggling' RCS.

It's not like ASO picks it's wildcards base on sporting reasons only. CCC gets wildcards to other races through sponsorship, as does Novo and Cofidis. To me it's really not a big issue. There could have been a better choice for their spot, but there could have been a better choice to all the spots (bar Bardini imo).

Don't even get me started on that - with what Bretagne-Seche deserved a wildcard for TdF? Only Cofidis and Direct Energie are competitive French teams. But ASO as so big "nationalists" that they will give the wildcards to Cofidis, Fortuneo, Direct Energie and Delko Marseille

Wildcards have been an issue for me - ASO and RCS are such ***** that they only care for their "local" teams. I understand why United HealthCare doesn't bother to ask for wildcards anyway

RCS never invites 4 Italian teams. There is always one from a foreign country.

I remember in 2010 ISD was not invited even though they had Rujano who was in incredible form up until the announcement. (it was in March back then iirc).

That year they invited Cofidis who brought a ridicolous weak squad cause they were also doing the Tour and Vuelta. Last years it was Netapp and Colombia getting the foreign team wild card.

Same goes for any other race.

F.E. Last year Dimension Data (sponsor of MTN) also got MTN_Qhubeka in the TDF. But MTN wasn't there in Paris Nice (as Dimension Data wasn't a partner yet)

Last Year Sprandi (Sponsor of CCC) did sponsor RCS which also resulted in Giro participation.

F.E. Novo Nordisk are also partners of the tour of Britain (while they don't have any guy from Britain)

I can give some other examples if you want.

Last year there were only 17 WT teams, meaning 5 wild cards could be invited. This year 18 WT teams = 4 spaces

Yeah sometimes when they can invite 5 teams it is 4 italian teams + one foreign team but there will always be atleast one foreign team.

In 2011 and 2013 no Italian teams missed out either because RCS had special exception that they could invite 23 teams (because the anniversary of Italy and Katusha dispute).

But the years that there were only 4 wild cards an Italian team missed out each time (CSF-Bardiani-Colnago in 2009, ISD in 2010, Acqua e Sapone in 2012)

Now also some French wildcards: No real surprises imo. Obvious teams for PN. Nice teams for Dauphine. I`d say first three in Dauphine most likely will also get a Tour de France wildcard.

UCI has announced numbers for Olympic Road events. Spain and Italy are the only teams to qualify a full compliment of 5 RR and 2 ITT riders. Belgium, Colombia and GB get 5 RR and 1 ITT. Iran gets 3 RR and 1 ITT. USA gets 2 RR and 2 ITT.

If that wasn't surpising - ASO "nationalism" reached its peak. And guess that's why they want to quit the World Tour.

So... Sagan brings back hairy legs in cycling? Unbelieveable what you can get away with when you are Sagan. And world champion.

If I turned up like this in my ameteur club I would be roasted! But then again, i'm not Sagan... Pfft
