Sh*t like this is why Cycling will never establish itself as a sustainable and solid mainstream sport. ASO are being d*cks, UCI are being d*cks, RCS are being d*cks, Velon are being d*cks and the fans are sucking so many d*cks as a result.
You'd assume ASO has all the negotiating power, but at the same time the UCI can tell them to f*ck off and not give them HC catagory at all, which would kill ASO(i believe). Neither side can really win this from the current standpoints.
ASO needs to relinquish some of its dominating power over the calendar and big races. UCI needs to listen to everyone about reforms and not push through widely unpopular ideas. Both sides have good and bad arguments, but in the end everyone is set-up to lose. Hooray.
Can't watch FIFA events, can barely watch F1, can't watch Athletics, can barely watch Tennis and now i probably won't be able to watch cycling... erm... tiddlywinks anyone?

By the way if it does go through doesn't ASO organise the Vuelta too? The Giro will be an epic GT.

I honestly agree with what ASO did, few weeks ago AIOCC voted 69 vs 2 (iirc) against the UCI reforms, since then little communication was between the two parties before the reforms were announced, ASO did what it had to do.
ASO has got all the power in this as well. Tour is THE cycling. Without Tour good luck UCI attracting any sponsors whatsoever to the sport, no chance. ASO would be leading situation in this case if all they owned was Tour, let aside Vuelta, Roubaix, LBL and others.
But anyway the ASO vs UCI battles are ongoing since forever, I am almost 100% some comprise will be made before 2017, UCI can't afford it otherwise.

It's clear that this is some brinkmanship (although pretty hefty brinkmanship to be fair) going on; I think it's highly unlikely this would actually turn out to be the case. But it's time for me to play devil's advocate: even if it did, would it necessarily be a bad thing?
No one cares about the UCI Ranking and all the trappings of the World Tour, do they? Running ASO events as .HC races would not only a) make the races more interesting if they followed current .HC rules like 7 rider teams and no team radios, but b) actually in some cases improve the quality of the fields, like in Paris-Roubaix for instance - remember Euskaltel? That carries on in today's peloton - Movistar's best result in that race in the past three years is 37th, I'm sure a PCT team could contribute more than that. You would only have to invite two or three more PCT teams to the race to satisfy .HC regulations. Some teams would then opt out of the WT, as it would be more financially viable to be PCT, and if they had a reasonably strong roster they could easily get invited to the rosters they wanted. Plus, there's a precedent for this: the 2008 Tour was run outside of the UCI wasn't it? Okay, Vino and his Bertie-led pals weren't invited but it was still a 'proper' Tour (and a better race than much since, incidentally)

Awful news for German cycling.
As posted earlier, it`s now confirmed. The Bayern Rundfahrt is missing 300.000 €. So the last German stage race is cancelled from the 2016 calendar.
They will try to make it back for the 2017 one, but it`s obviously not easier after missing one year. |

I am not german, but i know it is Düsseldorf
It is almost in Netherlands iirc, so no joy from it being somewhat closer to Czech Republic, München would be cooler.

Yeah I agree, München would have been ubersweet, especially because of some sweet climbs close to the border to Austria for a second stage. 
But Düsseldorf is alright too, family of my gf is living there so might visit them this summer...uh, for family reasons obviously.

So ten years after watching the Münsterland Giro, I may actually visit a cycling race in 2017?! Guess it depends on the actual route, but I'm too close to Düsseldorf to not consider a trip..
The political decision behind this move remain "interesting" though.. Apparently a secret voting, won by just one vote and with the support of some "suspicious" parties like AfD (located the "right wing" in the political spectrum..)...

ASO v.s UCI battles are happening in lots of different sports, this always happens when money gets into a sport, the professionals are better for it, which is the way it should be because they do their jobs really well, but the fans come worse when the money comes into play because the racing becomes worse with the infighting behind the scenes about who should be getting the money produced through the racing. Cycling will become better with more money but it needs to spent in the right places. |
