Maybe it is time to broke this stupid "rule"
Regarding the Ian fanboying for Peter, nah, he is not even close to my level. 
But of course i am glad he gained a lot of positive reputation lately on Daily. Also i am not pointed by fingers every time i write "Sagan" now (that is actually also caused by some of the most arrogant members saying goodbye to the site).

I quite agree. Nowhere near your level
However, I'm always a fan of exciting riders and I've always been fond of Sagan. This WC title and especially how he won it (and after a year of abuse from Tinkov ) only shows why he deserves to be praised. Just the WC cycling needs. Not a sour, complaining Cancellara, but a smart, funny, rock 'n roll Sagan. |

Even the season appears to be over, I am super excited CQRanking Team standings can't be closer coming to last few races
All three teams will be racing 2.1 Abu Dhabi Tour, with Etixx racing two flat classics and Sky doing Japan cup, so Etixx should get over the line at the end, butt it'll make these races just that tad more interesting anyway

You missed out stage 13 Alak
Although we found out about the route a few days ago, it's always nice to have official confirmation and see the proper profiles. I'm pretty pleased with the route, probably lacks another good mountain stage and I am worried about altitude, but they've recognised the success of the excellent 2015 route and tried to build on that formula for next year. Note the wonderful number of stages that have that all-important 'hard climb then easier climb' combo that has proven so successful in the past.
First three stages in the Netherlands are boring, but we knew that would be the case anyway (what a waste of time, I mean honestly, it would be so much better to have those three stages in Italy where we could have some nice varied terrain instead of popping over to a country nowhere near Italy for the 50 billionth time in the last ten years or so), but thankfully they're starting with a prologue, and so that means NO TTT!
Stage 4 is one of those nice nuggety little Giro stages that have a really spicy finale, should be quite interesting with a wide range of possibilites open. Roccaraso stage is a good first week MTF with a very inconsistent climb being conducive to attacking racing. Strade Bianche is back which is excellent news, and it is at a key point at what looks like a very steep climb (can't find details so just going off the profile); while it almost certainly won't provide 2010-levels of excitement we should still see attacks. TT we already knew about, not much to say there. I like the Sestola stage, the 1-2 punch of the Pian del Falco climb (3.5km @ 8.6%) before the shallower climb to Sestola (the first part of the climb that got steeper later on all the way up to Passo del Lupo that they used in 2014, here we stop at the town). Stage 12 to Asolo is another one that should provide excitement in the last 15km or so, even if the rest of the stage is pan-flat, once again the hard-easy combo means we won't just see a sprint at the line.
This is the Cividale del Friuli stage that was missed out above, we knew about the profile earlier, it's a great medium-mountain stage with steep climbs and good proper narrow, technical descents, yay!
Stage 14 is a Maratona dles Dolomites tribute, as you can see from this picture, from Arabba all the way to the end, so I assume that means they will use the Mür dl Giat in La Villa about 5km from the finish, about 250m @ 20%, which adds a little spice to the end of the stage. I think it's a great stage, especially in honouring the Maratona dles Dolomites, but Fedaia-Pordoi-Campolongo, finishing in Corvara, would have been much better; I just feel Giau is slightly too far away from the finish. But nevertheless awesome scenery (unless it's snowing, in which case it will be an awesome stage ) and a hellish day up and down relentlessly with no flat in the last 130km
MTT is quite nice, but not straight after the Dolomites stage. Thankfully it's only 11km or so, not like the ridiculous Grappa MTT in 2014, but it will still likely inhibit all-out attacking on the stage beforehand, as Alakagom said. I like Stage 16 a lot, Mendola is 14.8km @ 6.5%, which will soften up the domestiques, and Fai della Paganella is 9.5km @ 7.5%, a pretty tough climb before a nice little period of 10km uncertainty at the finish. Coming after the rest day, and being a very short stage, it should provide us with some entertainment: perhaps think Monte Ologno stage of this year without the descent (although the climb is not as tough). Pinerolo stage another opportunity for good descending, remember this is the Pramartino from 2011 Tour that the Schlecks whined about.
After that we have the final two mountain stages. The first we knew about already, and it's utter bollocks but at least we get Agnello, one of my favourite climbs, even if it's completely wasted with miles of valley road before a meh MTF. However Stage 20 as I had talked about earlier, having seen the profile outline which gave away the climbs, is excellent and is a stage I really look forward to, providing the weather plays ball.
Overall, it is very weather dependent, but if the weather gods are with us (or leave us but to the extent that Stelvio 2014 is possible) then it should be very good, provided it's raced like Giri should be, like last year, not like the comatose 2012 edition. A couple of stages disappoint, but many are very nice.

Stage 14 is pretty much high risk, high reward. Don't be disappointed if it ends up into nothing considering that Giau seems to top 50 km out and a MTT, short yes, but pretty steep follows. Im totally in love with stage 20 tho, that should be one hell of a spectacle from the beginning.
Some must catch stages apart from 14 and 20 seems to be 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, and 16. 18 shouldnt be underestimated either since Pramartino is from the hard side. Risoul is a decent MTF and it really wouldnt matter if Agnello is closed or not.
Overall? As Stromeon said, it reminds me a lot of the 2015-edition which proved to be a near perfect route. I'll give it a 7 considering the first week is pretty shitty, but from stage 8 and onwards, I like it. Its a near perfect route for Nibali, but dont be surprised if Valverde shows up - something tells me that we will get to see him for the first time considering the route which also suits Valverde very, very much. |
