Stromeon: In terms of just the last climb considering there was nothing else beforehand, it was an epic climb imo. Absolutely love when the field gets demolished on the lower parts of the climb and the best riders (in this case Nairito, Purito and Froomey) battle it out. Should definetely revisit Semnoz, one of the hardest climbs gradientw-wise in the French Alps. |

Also lets get real here, in 2013 (where more or less the same field attended, excluding Nibali), there were 4 mountaintop finishes. Sky blew it apart on Ax-3-Domaines (on the bottom) and on Mont Ventoux (on the mid section) with loooong way to go. Alpe d' Huez is Alpe d' Huez and is almost always ridden in a furious pace from the bottom (which is kinda did in 2013) and on the last climb, Annecy Semnoz, riders were blown all over the route BEFORE the climb even started (without any notable climbs before) which made for the best mountaintop finish I have ever seen with absolutely huge timegaps.
Let me be clear: The longer uphill finishes are not an invitation to anything if Froome is as good as that year - or Quintana is crazy strong, for that matter. These finishing climbs are more than hard enough compared to the Giro (Pierre Martin, Plateau de Beille and Alpe d' Huez - roughly 15 kms in average with 8%) to light a fire.
I like the fact they included a few walls this year, those are stages where pretty big gaps can be gained without the textbook nature of the big climbs.
guys who may not have a huge chance at winning but are very strong riders can claim 10-30s on others.
I mean if they ride the Huy stage hard or some of the others, the final climb will look like a graveyard. |

Ugh....
Great to see Agnello back in the Giro, but wasting it by following it with a long flat section before a boring MTF? No thanks.
Other less concrete rumours include the famous bunch sprint MTF at Montevergine, a Dolomites stage finishing in Corvara or possibly Fedaia-Pordoi (although I think this would be a good stage for the 100th edition in 2017) and also Alpe di Siusi.

So the Giro starts in the Netherlands and has it's penultimate stage finish in France hmmmm I think they could of done better. So the race finishes in Torino according to the rumours

I dont like that either. First of all starting in NL sucks, will be quite crash prone I think. And NL is just not that exciting compared to what you can find in Italy. But economics man, economics. Risoul is not that easy as a climb in a vacuum, but I want to see something bigger and it will be quite anticlimactic finishing it all of in France imo.
Lets see what they come up with. Both in the Tour and the Giro - I suppose the Tour route will be revealed first, no?
Edit: No bias against NL, I feel the same way (even more) of countries like Ireland, DK etc. I just want it to start somewhere it doesnt rain, is cold and flat. |

Looking forward to all the routes being announced and that climb looks immense. Have heard some good stuff about Fauniera! Tour is medio Oct, while Vuelta is Jan, but when is the Giro route announced? |

It's meant to be announced after the Vuelta in late September but not 100% on the actual date

Do we have any idea how hard the short climbs at the end actually are? |

There are couple (3 basically) uphill sections:
E-main street (350m @ 6%) and Libby Hill park (250 m @ 7.6%) is basically one longer hill with a bit of flat in the middle.
23rd Street (250m @ 11%) is the steepest with max at 20%
Then there is the last final km on Governer street: First 300 m @ 7% then the last 700m false flat.
All these 3 hills are inside the last 5km of the lap.

Great thanks, I have seen the profile but couldnt seem to find the gradients.
So someone like Thomas or GVA attacking on 23rd st? The last two climbs are cobbled as well correct? |

ITT for next year's Giro unveiled today. In keeping with their favourite theme of putting the TT through wine-country, as last year and the year before, we are in the Chianti region of Tuscany. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's any Strade Bianche though 
Quite hilly and quite a bit shorter than last year's marathon, but nevertheless it's a decent length TT (ASO are you paying any attention at the back there?), and if rumours are correct, will be the middle of three TTs, a prologue in Nijmegen and an MTT to Alpe di Siusi afterwards.

Nice looking TT, hilly but not hilly enough to count out true TT riders and long enough for a TT strong GC rider to gain time, looking at you Uran

RCS seem to be trying to release the Giro route for next year stage-by-stage, after the reveal of the TT a couple of weeks ago today we have the official release of the profile of what looks like a very interesting medium mountain stage finishing in Cividale del Friuli, that had been heavily rumoured for the past couple of months or so. It's Stage 13 which means we're going to be spending quite a lot of time in the north again.
Penultimate climb is 10.5km @ 7.3%, can't find a profile for the last climb but looks similar gradient if not steeper, albeit shorter. Looks very nice, should be a good stage.
Stages to Corvara, Livigno, Sant'Anna di Vinadio, Alpe di Siusi MTT and sterrato (rumours a lot stronger this year than previous years) are still on the cards. If so, should be another cracking route, despite Risoul.

Looking at what's confirmed or very strong rumours the Giro plans to go to 2600 vertical + on 3 seperate mountain stages, talk about tempting fate. I didn't think this years route lacked keeping things under potential stage cancelling altitudes, don't get me wrong I love the big climbs but also want to see stages not have to be shortened or neutralised. Hope they have good back-up plans in place
