Roma Maxima - Dicussions
Imladrik
(Sorry, this one comes in late, as I've quite forgotten it)

Such a specific race here in Rome! The first half is quite flat, without too much danger. Then a quite long, but not too hard climb, before the second half and all its paved sectors till the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Profiles/mg_romamax.jpg

It’s the sixth edition of the race, the second as a PTHC event. The only two times winner is Kenneth Vanbilsen, who won the two first editions for Lierse SK – Pizza Ullo PCTeam. The win always went to cobblers with capable sprints, like Joeri Stallaert or Mads Pedersen.

Two riders stand out as the ultimate favorites: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Pedersen won last year and aim to do that again after a quite disappointing season until now. Good on the flat, one of the best sprinters here, and of course one of the best cobblers of the world, the Dane will be quite difficult to beat. He’s got an excellent lieutenant in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Tiller, and all the others of the team are quite good on the cobbles also. The climb doesn’t seem long or hard enough to pose a threat. It’s also very far from the finish line.
He’ll find on the path to victory the world champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski (4th last season), and his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Anderberg (16th last season, 7th in 2021). The two Aker riders have had great success working together this season, that they’ll want to replicate in a moderately strong field.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Per, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Theuns are all excellent cobblers able to win from a select group, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Stallaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Summerhill maybe aren’t strong enough to be in such a group. Lastly, the Tinkoff duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Senechal and Kamyshev will need to create the decision before the sprint.

Per did a tremendous job in the first wave of cobbled classics, but we continue to need big results from him if we want any chance of staying up. If he maintains his strategy and poise from earlier, I'm hopeful we can continue to score well here.

Thanks for the preview!

Really hope we find our legs again here, doing similar to how we started our cobbles season instead of how it progressed, especially with the two monuments. At least we can only blame ourselves here if we don't find the depth points and have Wisniowski and Anderberg in contention for the win, as the field is slightly weaker compared to the monuments. Fingers crossed!

Should be the last cobblestone race for a while, glad that part of the season is over.

Once more we can’t really expect anything. We have a solid base for depth scoring and it just takes one of them to Mark a solid day to get a decent result, like last year, but we’ll have to see what happens. After a poor Amstel we could use a bit of an overperformance.

I'd be happy with a repeat of last year's 6th place, though I'd be happy with a repeat of Stallaert's win from the year before, too Pfft We need a Top 10 at the very least here, and maybe Teggart can sneak in some depth points, too. Good luck everyone!

Fabianski
Definitely one of the biggest races left for Theuns! He's been amazing in PCT so far - and he's got a podium in Vlaanderen against PT-only competition. So I think expecting a Top 10 here isn't unrealistic - and if he's got some great legs, and if the hill a couple of kilometers from the finish plus the apparently slightly ascending final stretch somehow matter, he could even be in the mix for a Top 5. But there are 8 stronger cobblers than him present, so I'll happily take everything that's better than a low Top 10 Smile

Thanks for the preview, and good luck to everyone!

Luis Leon Sanchez
As usual on the cobblestones, not expecting much from our team. Good experience for the youngsters and hopefully a handful of points from Ovsya along the way!

redordead
Hoping for an upset and some points, but not really expecting anything as is the case with most of the classics.

Thanks for the preview.

Banana A LEGEND IS BORN!!! Banana

A slight overreaction, we didn't win the race. Congrats Ember Pfft

But it feels like a victory for a home grown talent like Siric to go up against some of the best cobblers and finish in 2nd place! Grin

It was kind of a perfect race for us. A nice effort from Groselj in the breakaway and then Poljanec was still there providing support and even going for a cheeky attack. Siric just kept holding on and on waiting for the sprint finish which eventually came and that's his best skill.

Pair this result with the top 10 in RVV and we've had a brilliant cobbled campaign. I've waited to be seriously competitive again on the cobbles since 2018 and I was thinking I have to wait at least this year more, but I've had my fill now Grin

Thanks for the fun and express report Imladrik Smile

Brilliant depth performance here, and 11th is also a fairly solid result.

Not sure it’s a big point harvest, but we are atleast bagging some points.

What an extraordinary result from Siric, congrats red Grin And to ember for the win as well, I guess, even if that somehow feels less impressive Pfft

For us, 5th place from Stallaert as the best PCT rider plus Teggart and Okbamariam in the Top 50 is close to the best we could've hoped for. Really good effort all around.

cio93
Three riders in the Top 30 is a good result, but looking at several 77cob riders making the top spots and Meiler only being 30th despite his good punch over that decisive hill, I again wonder if there wasn't much more in it if we just got lucky or slightly better once in these races.

Rutsch winning the group sprint for 19th to lead us home is a very good sign though, and gives further encouragement to focus on his development in the coming years.
He appears to be well-rounded as I hoped, now it's only about adding 2-3 years worth of training to get him right in the mix.

Congrats ember and particularly redordead!
Great racing from Wisniowski as expected, and from Siric as .... also expected by now? When surprises come in pairs, they start becoming skill! Smile

Thank you Imladrik for capturing all the back and forths very well!

Fabianski
Hum... Slightly mixed feelings. On one hand, 7th place is a perfectly acceptable result for Theuns. I said a Top 10 would be fine, and I got a Top 10.
However, I still have the feeling that he could've done more. Especially finishing behind Siric and Salzmann definitely hurts, and I can't quite figure out why it happened. Both are worse on both hills and cobbles, so I guess it just was daily form (as I do believe by now that resistance matters absolutely not at all).
Also, being beaten by Stallaert in a PTHC race is obviously not great, he should rather restrict himself to doing that in C1, please Pfft

So, after all it's a very mediocre month for us - as was partly expected, though, but we had no race with a clear overperformance, rather some disappointing underperformances. Hoping for more positive races in May then Smile

Congrats to Wisniowski, Aker are clearly keeping their great push going for now Smile
Congrats to Cedevita as well, finding and self-developing such an overperformer (clearly punching above his main stats) must feel great Smile

And thanks a lot for the report to Imladrik Smile

(And yes, I know this rounds off April racing, but please don't expect the ranking updates to be complete before mid-next week or so...)

Another terrific race for Per! Can't complain at all. Got a little worried when he attacked so early that he would blow up, but once again he showed that he's one of the few strongest cobblers in the peloton by showing at the front for the entire finale. Another podium and another 100 points to add to his total for the year. Lovely result.

Congrats to ember on another deserved win, though commiserations to tastasol. Not sure what's up with Mads this year. Only thing I can think of is lower mountain? But even that doesn't track in the individual races that he's underperformed.

Thanks for the report Imladrik!

Brilliant! Grin What a season we're having on the cobbles this year compared to last. I'm thrilled!

And thank you for a well covered race, Imladrik. Feared Wisniowski was out of it early doors, but luckily he came back and went aggressive afterwards, forcing his hand, but also securing to stay up front. With less than 1 kilometer left, I was sure they were going to overtake him, but luckily it seemed they all had to sit down, just like Wisniowski.

Pleasantly surprised with Bolivar's performance here. Did not expect a Minion at the end of the race here but some nice welcome points.

Had no clue we were in this race until we popped up almost in the break. We certainly didn't belong here but guess it was in our PTHC band.

Thanks for a great report Imladrik. Congrats to Aker. Generally I would expect this version to like Pedersen given his sprint, maybe sometimes it just isn't your years, so commiserations to Grieg.
