[C1] Milano - Torino
Welcome to the Northern part of Italy to the 14th edition of Milano - Torino.
The race runs nearly 200 km from the eponymous cities of Milan to Turin, starting in the Lombardian plains and leading to the hills of Piedmont, meaning the puncheurs should be favourites here.
Milano - Torino is part of the circuit since 2008 with a hiatus in 2009. Given its traditional hilly profile and uphill finish it’s no surprise that the win always resulted from a solo or the sprint of a small group.
The sole record winner is Chris Froome with wins in 2014 and 2016. As he’s retired, the only former winners on the startlist are Beltran, Hagen, Kinoshita and McCarthy. And though their wins reach back from 2015 to 2019, they essentially still make the list of top favourites of this years edition.
Previous winners:
Spoiler
Year | Winner | | | | | | | | | 2021 | Michal Kwiatkowski (Aker - MOT) | 2020 | Wilco Kelderman (Philips) | 2019 | Eduard Alexander Beltran (Swisslion Cycling Team) | 2018 | Tomohiro Kinoshita (Meiji - JR East) | 2017 | Edvald Boasson Hagen (Grieg - Eftel) | 2016 | Chris Froome (Arrinera) | 2015 | Jay McCarthy (Bank of Ireland - Irish Cycling) | 2014 | Chris Froome (Quickstep) | 2013 | Aleksandar Flügel (VolksWagen-Mapei) | 2012 | Massimo Iannetti (Pirelli - Alfa Romeo) | 2011 | Riccardo Ricco (Bacardi - Colt) | 2010 | Mikhail Ignatiev (100% ME) | 2008 | Fortunato Baliani (Ceramica Panaria - Navigare) |
2021 results:

The startlist of this race is long, composed of 15 PCT and 9 CT teams. As the race is mostly hilly in the second half and finishes uphill, we have to consider the puncheurs as race favourites.
Puncheurs:
The list of good puncheurs is long, so we focus on the best of them - knowing that we probably miss out some riders who will finish with a nice result. But our best bets for the win are former winners Kinoshita, McCarthy and Beltran.
| | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | | Kinoshita | Tomohiro | 72 | 83 | 80 | 77 | 68 | 77 | Voyagin - Bird | McCarthy | Jay | 67 | 82 | 80 | 75 | 65 | 74 | Amaysim Cervélo | Beltran | Eduard Alexander | 79 | 81 | 73 | 72 | 66 | 76 | Cedevita | Hagen | Edvald Boasson | 66 | 81 | 75 | 68 | 69 | 73 | Tafjord Kraft | Paulinho | Pedro Miguel | 75 | 80 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 75 | Binance | Eiking | Odd Christian | 69 | 80 | 78 | 74 | 68 | 76 | Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team | Borges | Bruno | 70 | 80 | 75 | 73 | 71 | 81 | Indosat Ooredoo | Boswell | Ian | 71 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 65 | 76 | McCormick Pro Cycling | Benoot | Tiesj | 75 | 80 | 75 | 74 | 69 | 71 | Philips - Force India | Prevar | Oleksandr | 71 | 80 | 77 | 70 | 67 | 73 | Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska |
Break of the Day:
The profile of the race doesn’t exactly give big chances for the win to the break of the day, but here are the best fighters at the start nonetheless:
| | FL | ST | RS | AC | FG | | Yzeiraj | Marildo | 77 | 74 | 74 | 71 | 85 | Oktal Pharma - TotalTV | Arifin | Muhammad Imam | 66 | 67 | 71 | 72 | 82 | Indosat Ooredoo | Bernas | Pawel | 76 | 75 | 71 | 73 | 82 | Strava | Stoltz | Yannick | 77 | 71 | 74 | 69 | 82 | Philips - Force India | Jallays | Welle | 74 | 67 | 72 | 61 | 80 | McCormick Pro Cycling | Phelan | Adam | 71 | 73 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Air New Zealand p/b Pirelli | Seibeb | Costa | 71 | 70 | 69 | 73 | 80 | Project: Africa |
Honourable Mentions:
As the season is coming to an end it’s time to mention (and honour) those riders who could retire at the end of the season. Those riders probably are Robert Gesink and Simon Spilak, as they are the oldest competitors this year.

When we decided to send one of our puncheurs to Lugano, it was more about which one would be suited to surprising in a result there than which one had a better shot here. The field is obviously pretty stacked, with Aranburu not even making the contenders list. Still hoping he can come through with a top 10. It's a shorter classic, and hopefully the quick succession of climbs at the end will invoke his resistance.
Thanks for the preview!

Thanks for the preview!
We're mainly here for the XP, to make our Italian squad ride together and hope a local sponsor will take an interest in us, and to hope for some Wackerman or Doubey magic.

We don't have a super strong team here around Beltran, but it was the same in the Balkans. Let's see if Beltran has carried over some form from there.
Thanks for the preview

Very strong startlist, if Moscon doesn't even make the contenders list... Not that it would matter, he's been disappointing being a favorite or not. If climbing should somewhat matter, Stüssi could at least be a good domestique, as he's the only other decent puncheur we have here.
Thanks for the preview.

Not a huge fan of our most recent results, so a strong performance by McCarthy would be welcome here! He delivered in some races this year, so of course we must aim high. Also cool to see a bunch of former race winners here. Should be fun then

Benoot on the lower end of the favourites' list but he has been doing better than that all season and let's hope it continues. Historically, we have mostly done well in this race, so let's hope that continues as well.
Thanks for the preview kandesbunzler

Kinda lame 6th for McCarthy, but at least Storer adds some depths inside the Top-20.
Thanks for the report!

Huge race for Aranburu! Was that performance worth his training? If we promote, yes. It will be worth everything. Perfectly positioned, domestiques supported him, and he managed his energy perfectly up the final stretch. Beltran is simply the stronger rider, so no shame at all to lack enough punch to stick with him in the end. Aranburu has come up very clutch when it mattered, and this won't be forgotten.
And Kasper fricking Asgreen! A +5 day for sure. Once we switched to PCM 18, I feared he would be completely useless as a pure hills guy, and have tried to swap him out for someone more versatile several times. And up until now, he's had a few breakawyas, but otherwise proven anonymous. Today he protected Aranburu longer than any other leader and then manages to finish 12th against some serious competition. What a performance in the clutch!
Congrats to Cedevita, who deserve the win but worringly gain on us in the rankings, and thanks for the report Nemo!

We are not finishing strong. 27th very poor from Boswell, especially given how good Eiking was, who is a very similar rider. Boswell has underperformed in all the races with stronger fields this year. He will need to be more competitive if we are in PCT next year, a better supporting cast would probably help.
Thanks for the report Nemo congrats to Red on a nice win.

Wow, was this really the same Moscon as the one who finished outside the Top 30 in Wallonie, and who couldn't get a single Top 5 in a C2 race this year? Really an amazing job by him for once - and although missing out on a podium by so little definitely stings a bit, I clearly can't complain about a Top 5 by him in a C1 race!
It looks like the race indeed was pretty tough, so Stüssi, Basso and maybe even Rowsell from the breakaway could provide some important support here. No depth points by them, OK, but apparently they did a great job anyway
Congrats to Cedevita, I see quite a lot of orange everywhere lately
Thanks for the report.

Benoot finishing where the preview mentioned. Was hoping for a Top 5 but depth points by Raileanu makes up for it somewhat.
Congrats to Cedevita on another great result Beltran is almost unbeateable in this race! Thanks for the report Nemo

Looks like Beltran has Balkans and Milano-Torino set as his favourite races
Only a 6 man team here, but looks like they did a good job controlling the race. No depth even from Gaudu, but looks like he did a hard turn to set up Beltran and that's why we appreciate the Frenchman. He always finds ways to contribute to success
Nice to see Beltran turn back the clock and destroy the opposition on a steep uphill finish, if his positioning is good then he can still do what he did. Also nice to see Moscon finally give Jura a good result, the hybrids did well here.
Fun fact, we haven't won a classic since 2019 when Beltran won in both Milano-Torino and Emilia. Maybe this is his 'last dance'?
Thanks for the congrats and thanks to Nemo for the report, I loved seeing Beltran with his hands in the air after the season he's been having
