Post Danmark Rund - Stage 3
Imladrik
Hills time! No big mountain to climb, no wall of Huy today, but lots of small bumps which might break the legs of the sprinters and, to be fair, to a good number of riders. All that in a medium length stage between Grejsdal and Vejle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410152619_1.jpg

Only 12 mountain points to be taken today, and probably this classification won’t be what interest everyone: the inattentive or tired riders might already lose any hope of a good classification well ahead of the final time-trial.

Obviously, the peloton doesn’t want to let a bigger group go. For now, three riders have a 50 seconds gap: the white jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Rojas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Bernas (3rd GC and 2nd KoM) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Bellis not in the break – he’ll be protecting his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen, that’s a good moment for Bernas to try and take the best climber jersey. As he’s also a decent puncher, he could also have a shot at taking the GC lead only by surviving with the finishing group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410153632_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Air New Zealand, local team pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Bralirwa – Stevens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Cedevita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Minions are leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410153745_1.jpg

For Air New Zealand, it was all about sending someone in the break! They rode hard to prepare pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Skala’s attack. He’s joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Velasco.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410153936_1.jpg

But the leaders’ gap shrunk as a result of the fast pace, and with 114 km to go, everyone is back together.

10 km later, a new break seems to satisfy everybody: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bush, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Stuyven, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Gunman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Debusschere. Nobody has any mountain points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Velasco tries to brdige, but he’s 1’15 late. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Zara and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg lead the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410154309_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Gunman leads the breakaway up the first climb, only to be beaten on the line by the latecomer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Velasco. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Stuyven is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410154547_1.jpg

107 km to go, and the gap is 3’35. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Amaysim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Assa Abloy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Sauber Petronas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Popo4Ever joined the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Gunman takes the points in the intermediate sprint. 90 km to ride, the gap is 2’51.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410154758_1.jpg

Fast forward, as nothing interesting happens in the next kilometers. We come back to the race with 46 km to go, and a gap of 2’22. The riders will now enter the hardest part of the race, the one which should decide the stage. The last mountain sprint is 10 km away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410155232_1.jpg

When we arrive here, it’s the same mistake for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Gunman. This time he’s overtook by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Stuyven and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Velasco, in that order. That means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Bellis’jersey is safe and he should bring it home.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410155436_1.jpg

And we nearly missed it, but there are splits in the pack, splits everywhere!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410160418_1.jpg

Strictly speaking of GC favorites, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis seems to have missed the cut. He’s in the 2nd group. But if we speak on those who could have a good result today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Eriksson is on another group at the tail of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Storer is with Dennis, so Amaysim could help Minions to make up for the split…
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Pellaud also aren’t in the front group, and neither is the yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger.

Let’s see how all plays out. Zara, Assa Abloy and Indosat ride in the front group of 26, with 30 km to go.

10 km later, the 6 leaders have a 1 minute gap on a group of 22, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Tsatevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Golovash and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Arif Prayogo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410161106_1.jpg

Behind them is a group of 34 led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Scotson. Storer, Le Gac and Dennis are in this group, 34 seconds behind the chasers. They might soon merge with the yellow jersey group of 25.

15 km to go. The 6 leaders now have 1’01 on a group of 80 favorites, quite stretched. There still are five climbs, the finish sprint included. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Onodera are leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410161348_1.jpg

And first moves among the favorites! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy attacks along pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Prevar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410161628_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen tries to take their wheel. 12 km to go.

9 km left. The 6 leaders have 25 seconds on Prevar, Chernetskiy and Cosnefroy, and 42 seconds on a 65 men, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Bellis-led peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410161754_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Van Garderen attack the peloton as the chasers joined the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410161840_1.jpg

They close the gap fast enough, and this group of 11 has 41 seconds on the peloton with 7,8 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Prevar immediately attack and they quickly get a 15 seconds gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162018_1.jpg

5 last kilometers! The 11 leaders regrouped, and they still have 45’’ on the chasing group of 25. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Schönberger are the most notable riders to miss the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162118_1.jpg

Minions now has two strong riders in the leading group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Eg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Van der Haar are leading the chase.

2,7 km and two climbs to go for the leaders, the gap is 32 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162503_1.jpg

The riders are in the last downhill section, 1 km from the finish. Van Garderen and Cosnefroy lead the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162633_1.jpg

600 m. It’s all uphill now. Van Garderen and Cosnefroy have 6 seconds on the 9 chasers, and 34 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162731_1.jpg

400 m. Cosnefroy is finished, but Van Garderen is still strong. Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar attacks the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162847_1.jpg

And Van Garderen celebrates a convincing win! Behind him, the sprint is on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410162913_1.jpg

Cosnefroy manages to stay on the second place, a wheel ahead of Prevar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410163000_1.jpg

Then comes Dennis, who might make a step upon a good GC result, with a 4th place, ahead of Chernetskiy. Velasco and Scheit follow from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410163041_1.jpg

Bush and Stuyven close down the top 10, followed buy Gunman and Debusschere.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410163146_1.jpg

Dunbar wins the sprint from the peloton, and the top 15 is completed by Onodera, Le Gac and Jensen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Danmark/S3/20230410163251_1.jpg

Now we’re waiting for the gaps that will be given…
It’s 9 seconds for Van Garderen on Cosnefroy’s group, and 41 seconds on Dunbar’s group of 11.
Kämna maybe is one of the biggest losers, as he’s 1’04 away.

Van Garderen obviously takes the GC lead, with 27’’ on Cosnefroy and 39 seconds on Dennis. Those two now are the biggest favorites for the GC win. Dunbar and Paillot have a 1 minute gap.
Enger keeps the point jersey, Bellis the mountain jersey, and Sajnok will be the best young rider. Minions now leads the team classification.

Tomorrow should be a resting day, with a mass sprint to finish, ahead of the final ITT which will decide on the GC.
