Classica San Sebastian discussion
Imladrik
16th edition for the Classica San Sebastian, the classic of the Basque Country, in the North of Spain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Profiles/topclas_sansebastian.jpg

This year edition is shorter than it has been in other editions, but with more than 200 km and at least 6 steep hills, that will not be a resting day either. The last one is placed right before the end of the race, so it might be a decisive moment. The last downhill section, which leads to the finish line, might also be important.
Some previous winners are here:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Simone Ponzi won last year, but it’s doubtful that he’ll repeat that, as he should be here to help Sagan. The Slovakian is, with 2019 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Tomohiro Kinoshita and 2018 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Alexey Lutsenko, one of the top favorites.

The three indeed have all the skillset to win this race, as two of them already did. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko might be the best in a small group, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita will have to find the right moment to take over his contestants. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan can either use the very strong team brought by Moser to make the difference, or try to distance them in the last descent.
Behind these three, there are plenty of other riders who, in a good day, could beat them, even though, on paper, they are not as good. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman might have had an underwhelming season, and doesn’t have the strongest team with him. He’ll probably not be allowed to go in the break, so he’ll have to try to keep up with the others and attack at the right moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Gidich will maybe have men up the road, to help him when the race begins to be difficult. He also has a good physical condition, and that dose of punch which might be useful. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge will probably not make the decision himself, but if he can stay at the front, he can have a good result from a reduced group.
Worth of note also, the good duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann and Müller for UBS, the other team with more than one rider in the favorite’s list.

Raileanu leads us here, so pretty much whatever we get is a bonus.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Kelderman in the top-10 would already be quite a positive surprise, so let's see if he's able to fight for it. Thanks for the preview!

Not often you see a double win! Congrats, Roman Smile

Also cool to see Eiking being so close to the podium.

I think there's an argument to be made to eliminate routes that have downhills stretching into the final 2-3 kilometers, as those can more easily lead to weird and more random results. At least those races where a large peloton heads into the climb leading to the downhill like this one (less of an issue when smaller groups reach the finale). See also MSR last year. Something to keep an eye on, in my opinion (MSR had even been adjusted, if I'm not mistaken?).

That shouldn't take away from the very nice report though, and congrats to Roman, what a result for Moser! King Power also with a good surprise from Quita.

Congrats Roman!

Cool to see Eiking riding aggressive and hard <3

Thanks a lot for both the preview and the report, Imladrik!

Oh wow, after such an underwhelming season finally things work out somehow better - and boom! Indeed has to be the first time my team is taking a 1-2 in a PT race. Even better that it is Ponzi with the win - as this may be the final win of his career.

Soooo much-needed points! Banana

Your argument is pretty much on point, Cunego. Thanks a lot, guys!

Not how I thought the race would go to be honest Shock

We did a lot of pacing and controlling and I would have liked to see an attack on the final climb. Keeping things together for a sprint when Beltran is not a good sprinter is not smart, but luckily his positioning was good at least for once and we came away with the top 10 result we were looking for.

Two top 10s in fact?! Level 3 Ardila's best result of his career with 9th place is quite a surprise. Gaudu in 12th is also very good, then three more riders in the top 50. Very good scoring in total Smile

Thanks for the report and congrats to Moser Smile

Raileanu finishing 67th... We didn't have high hopes but I thought at least a Top 30 was doable. Apparently not!

Congrats to Roman and thanks for the report Imladrik Smile

Kelderman 22nd and once again getting dropped early with super strong energy stats and his mountain (and hill) stat also simply higher than several riders in the top-10. This game really isn't fond of our team it seems.

Congratulations on the great 1-2 to Roman and to Imladrik for yet another well written report Smile

Not a fantastic race in terms of action and our team result, but very happy for Moser. Higuita did reasonably well, if he wasn't boxed in maybe more would've been possible.

When the group was still this large going into the final kilometres, I knew that probably my best bet would be Quita with his decent sprinting capabilities. It seems like if the race was a few metres longer he would've been able to even jump on the podium. Nevertheless a 4th place makes up for Gidich not getting into the top 10.
Congrats Roman on a great result, it's nice to see old man Ponzi getting another classics win.
Finally, thanks for a great report Imladrik!

SotD
Oh wow, what a race from Moser. Ponzi forgot that he was old and "worthless" for a moment, and then Sagan doing his thing. Brilliant. Also great races from King and Cedevita.
