It`s the same profile as in the 2021 season, where the top puncheurs and top sprinters had a nice fight for bonus seconds to decide for the winner.
In the end veteran Ponzi got the win by 13s over Manninen, who won the first two stages and the point jersey. The decisive stage was the 4th with the Corkscrew climb and the downhill finish afterwards. Manninen did fight hard there and actually was part of the leading groups, though still lost 14 seconds, which was key for the GC win by Ponzi.
Behind them Borges in 3rd, Van Stayen in 4th and Prevar in 5th.
In 2022 it will be interesting to see, who takes the win here. The puncheurs usually a bit favoured and different to the last couple years, the home crowd might see an Aussie being listed on top of the list.
McCarthy has a strong team behind him and with his training lately, he widens the gap to the others on the uphill sections. It`s wide open though as there are plenty of similar riders. Borges obviously must be mentioned as he was close to the win in the last 3 editions and also Prevar`s top5 last year shows his potential.
Though Paulinho, Jensen, Eiking, Benoot, Van Garderen, Waeytens and others are almost equally strong and should fight for the win.
| Hi | Sp | Acc | | Hi | Sp | Acc | McCarthy | 82 | 65 | 74 | Waeytens | 80 | 66 | 73 | Paulinho | 80 | 68 | 75 | Chernetskiy | 79 | 63 | 71 | Jensen | 80 | 66 | 76 | Bilbao | 79 | 71 | 75 | Eiking | 80 | 68 | 76 | De Plus | 79 | 61 | 72 | Borges | 80 | 71 | 81 | Gebrezgabihier | 79 | 67 | 69 | Benoot | 80 | 69 | 71 | Bystrom | 79 | 68 | 76 | Van Garderen | 80 | 68 | 76 | Chaves | 79 | 60 | 72 | Prevar | 80 | 67 | 73 | Storer | 78 | 64 | 74 |
Who could step into Manninen`s spot and battle the puncheurs for a high GC from holding on after dominating the sprints.
Enger, Zabel, Vesely, Howard, Eislers, Kragh Andersen, Kennaugh. The list of similar sprinters is long and most aren`t too bad neither on the hills and might hang on.
With Kump and Houle you also have two riders, who are pretty solid on the hills and could even get bonus seconds on the tougher stages while not having the biggest speed on the pan flat days and Dzamastagic is always a rider you shouldn`t forget, even though he might have a leader for the bonus seconds in Kennaugh and could miss out here.

Admittedly one of our weaker line ups given the hills. Hoping that Paez can at least give it a go with his more punchy nature. Great chance for Vichot to get out on the attack too!
Not too much hope in Hofstetter getting involved in the sprints but fingers crossed

Funny to see Stallaert with BIB #1 here. I'm expecting very little, given we don't have a good puncheur and Stallaert isn't among the top sprinters. Ideally, we regularly get into breakaways and maybe one or two good results from sprints. Good luck everyone, and thanks for the nice preview roturn!

As per usual a bad Down Under Classic puts the pressure on us here. Bonifazio should show something and let's hope De Plus does well on the shorter hills.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

You’ve got to fancy McCarthy for the overall win, giving Amayism home glory and the perfect start for their season. This really is a race for him after his training, I’d say, with the easier hilly stages here.
No sprinter stands out as the obvious pick for the flat stages, which I think should favour the puncheurs considering overall glory. It also feels difficult for riders like Kump and Houle to compete for the GC here, as they’ll need to pick bonus seconds on the sprint stages to do so. |

Excited for Houle here, had some great results in the past obviously including 2nd in 2020 by four seconds, that doesn't make him a top favourite but it shows that there is a path for him to compete if the race goes our way. Hope it does!

Zabel should be mixing it for the sprints and as ever we are hoping for depth scoring in GC from Bilbao & co.
Thanks for the preview roturn.

This race could be incredibly hit or miss. There's a potential green jersey for Kennaugh here if everything goes to plan. For the hilly stages we would need some magic from Meurisse and De Vos for this become a great race though.

Last year the race was unselective enough that even AKA stayed in a GC position despite his climbing faults. I considered sending him here alone and hoping for the same again, but when you have two puncheur leaders, you can't justify that type of strategy for race day allocation.
So instead, we see our first GC/sprinter pairing of the year with Kristian Haugaard Jensen's debut. It's obviously a packed startlist, with Jensen near the top but basically equal to 10 other guys. I reckon we're gonna see similar fields throughout the year. We'lll have to see how the race pans out, but obviously I want KHJ near the front on the hilly stages and hopefully holding a place on GC if the race goes that direction.
For AKA, it's just a matter of doing what he's been doing. I hope if the race does end up being unselective that he tries to stay on the pack and doesn't defer to Jensen, but that's the risk I took sending them both. Hopefully it works out.
Thanks for the preview roturn!

More pressure on the team with after a disappointing DUC. Looking forward to Benoot and Minali in leadership roles for the first time in our colours. Hope for a Top 5 from Benoot, but a Top 10 is probably more likely.
Thanks for the preview roturn

Lets see how Errazkin handles PCT fields and maybe Hayakawa can get a lucky result

Go Tiesj!
De La Cruz Chapulin getting bib #2 in his team shows what a goat he already is. Great choice, Zara.

Obviously a way more important race than our Down Under Classic appearance. McCarthy as the best puncheur on paper with Storer as a premium support.. if the GC goes to a sprinter, we at least need to grab a stage-win here.

One thing only, hoping for a breakaway win. Perhaps a flat expert going full ham. That's really our only option

First race of the season, and a big one for us already. Howard and Borges both here so we have great expectations. Borges has done really well here in the past and has decent support so anything but a podium could hurt us come end of the season.
Thanks for the preview!

And back to our regularly scheduled programming. Always good to open the season with your sprinter not sprinting good to see Jensen having a dig.
Thanks roturn.
