Tour de Pologne - Discussion

Tour de Pologne

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Profiles/top_pologne.jpg

We head to Poland for a week-long HC stage race which offers a bit to almost all types of riders. We open with a short TT/Prologue before the first HIL stage. There are then 2 long stages which provide opportunities for the sprinters. We then finish the week with 3 stages in the hills although there may be some MO impact as well.

Podium History

GC2nd3rd
2020GesinkCattaneoYates
2019LecuisinierBoasson HagenKeinath
2018UlissiAnuar AzizSchreurs
2017FroomeUlissiVan Garderen

There has been a mix of well-rounded Climbers as well as Puncheurs on the podium over the years but, if 2020 is anything to go by, then the Hybrid Climber/Puncheurs will be the ones to look out for here. Gesink does return for another shot but it won't be easy for him here.

GC Favourites

Many would expect one of the top 2 favourites to win the GC here. Both have strong support so it'll be about consistency. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Beltran is generally more aggressive but he will be on the back foot after the prologue compared to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski.

It would be ill advised to look past others in this list too though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Carthy & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Latour two of the stronger climbers while the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Moscon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho prefer the shorter, sharper, climbs.

Pure Puncheurs

Outside of the top GC favourites, there are a number of riders who will be stage hunting when they're not supporting a GC leader. The top name here that stands out is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi but there are plenty of other strong riders here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png McCarthy has been in strong form so far this season but his focus will likely be on supporting his team leader for the GC.

Sprinter Favourites

It's a lot of RDs for a top sprinter to use and that may explain why there aren't too many top sprinters here. You'd expect the Carrefour duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Van Stayen and Hayakawa to be up there but acceleration may also make a difference. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Guardini should be a threat too.

TT/PRO Favourites

The opening stage provides an opportunity for the clock specialists to get a stage win and also lead the GC for a stage. They can be a little unpredictable but these are the ones we will be keeping a close eye on.

Optimistic! The pressure is high, as we get to do Kwiatkowski's home race. It's obviously every man behind him, and we even brought Amezawa to help him out. His support team should be solid here, but it will come down to himself and how he's on the important stage 2, 5 6 and 7. Lots of stages to do well, but also lots of stages to miss out on. We should be attentive here and stay near the front at all the right moments, considering Kwiatkowski must be considered one of the GC favourites here.

Fingers crossed Amezawa can also add depth points and maybe even have a shot at a top 10 overall, but admittedly that has second priority in this race. Though, his stats look great for the GC days here, which makes me even more excited for this race!

First goal race and a very important scoring race for Beltran and the team in general. Hopefully we can support him well and I would love to see a duel between him and Kwiatkowski Smile

Thanks for the preview LLS Smile

Manarelli not among the sprinter favourites, so no mention for us, seems like it will be seven great days for LPH Pfft Best bet for scoring is Munoz in an attack I guess, hoping his breakaway companions would be weaker than him. Thanks for the preview LLS, looking forward to the reports!

This race suited neither Hagen nor Uran tbf, but the latter had more free racedays so we're going with him. The prologue and stage 6 is where his moments should be.

We are technically here, but like so many races it's only because we didn't really have a choice. Racking up that XP though!

Kraftwerk have contenders for every stage, hope this can translate into a good Teams performance.

A chance for Boily to show what he can do.

We're a long shot to score any points at all here, I fear. On paper, Perera should have a decent chance in the sprint stages, but he's not delivered so far this season. The other hope is for Vendrame, Ndayisenga or even Rosskopf to do something from a breakaway later in the week. We'll see, but I tend to enjoy following races where I have no expectations at all, so I'm looking forward to it Grin Thanks for the preview!

Our team here is a bit gutted thanks to the Giro. Prioritizing this makes sense for rankings, but I might only get one shot to send my full A team to a GT, led by a Danish superstar. So sacrifices were made. Still, I'm pleasantly surprised by the startlist. I kind of thought it would be stronger. Seeing that, we should still be in the mix for some minor placings.

This is the first time we're letting Aranburu loose as absolute leader in a race that should suit him. He's been weak so far this year, but he's also only ridden where we had other options on GC. This should be more indicative of his true level. Obviously he'll lose time in the prologue, but after that, it's a decent spot for him as a hybrid. The last two stages especially should favor his type of climbing. Obviously there are still a lot of stronger riders, but I'd like him to be in the mix till the end.

Sprinter startlist is wide open like always. Lander is the weakest of the crowd there from his acceleration, but we all know sprints are a lottery, so it'd be nice if he participated and was able to get some points out of these at least. That's all I can really expect from someone of his style these days.

Thanks for a great preview LLS!

The fact Kinoshita isn't a GC favourite... damn.

Went from being a consistent Top 5 rider in PCT to not even mentioned in a hill race.

Guess it really is time to focus only on MO/HIL hybrids.

Wow... damn. I mean, I knew Alex was a horrendous prologue guy and would lose time, but wow. I honestly just didn't think there were 2 minutes to lose in 7 km.

GC done for us, but always nice to see an Eddie Stobart win. Congrats sutty!

Uran's early start perhaps cost him a bit as the later starters all did better. Hope those won't be crucial in the end.

Missed out commenting on the preview...if Teuns can live up to his Top 10 billing, I'll be really happy with this race.

Not a great start for Teuns though! Henttala with a decent performance on Stage 1.

Great start by Kwiatkowski! Really happy with that, especially considering the latter starters in general seemed to do very well. Was there a change in wind conditions? This start is great looking at stage 2, as it gives him a shot at yellow, if he can grab the stage win.

Thank you for the report, and for getting the race rolling, LLS!

That was pretty darn awful even by Beltran's low TT standards Pfft

Interesting race for us here, whether Carthy or McCarthy assume leadership for us here. Hopefully we can gather some depth scoring with the likes of Oliveira and Kennaugh who both have seemed to do very well in the prologue. In general I hope that these stages favour the stronger climbers and hopefully Carthy can spring a surprise in a race where we are using whatever race days he had left.

Rosskopf with another terrible TT performance, not great. But not like we were getting any points from that stage anyway. Now's the time for breakaway success!!

Baffled by those prologue results.

Strong performance by California 3rd place Dulanjana. He might be leader on the road after poor performances by Boily and Moazemi.
