Tour of Tasmania

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Profiles/t2_tasmania.jpg

Welcome to the 9th edition of the Tour of Tasmania stage race. Before among the last races on the MG calendar it has now been moved as the season opener for PT teams. What is the same is the parcour. A flat stage for the sprinters or perhaps brave breakaway riders. Followed by a hill stage and then the final decisive time-trial. It's a finely balanced race that has in the past produced winners from puncheur, time-trial specialists and stage racers.

With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

GC Favourites

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira747378757178

Heading the list of favourites is last year's winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney. The American is the best time-trialer in the world and has all the climbing ability and punch to make use of the hilly stage also. 2019 race winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Taaramäe making his debut for Evonik - ELKO. He's similar to Phinney, but slightly worse in every aspect. Next we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen who is great against the clock and has a solid punch on him. Another world class stage racer is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier who is the best climber here, but still very good on a TT bike. Talking of stage races we have plenty here, next is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio who is an outstanding TTer, but does lack some acceleration.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich is a good TTer for a puncheur and will be targeting the hilly stage for sure. Now we enter time-trial territory. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Dennis can handle bumpy terrain better than most as a TTer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Würtz are both specialists against the clock, but they're not awful going uphill. Can they limit their losses on stage 2? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda is a true hybrid for this race, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen has won this race before as a top puncheur, here as a wildcard this time. Both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin will look to hold on the punchy sections and recover on the final stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Oliveira gives Generali a 2nd GC option.

Sprinters

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson7372717977

Looking at the sprinters we have some top quality here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard is the fastest man on paper in pretty much every race he enters. Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb has to feel he is more than a match for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers has now fully "matured" and gets an early chance to face two of the best in PT. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe are strong sprinters and have to hope that the length of the stage somehow works in their favour. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen on the other hand is the other rider that has hopes of challenging the favourites top speed. The other guys on the list are all capable, but they'll need to be on a good day and do a great job wheel surfing.

Puncheurs

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen7568837176

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens7071807073

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen is a GC contender and also the big favourite for the hilly stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates is his big competitor here with his great explosiveness. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich is another rider looking at the GC and will need to make this stage count. The other riders here are mostly targeting this stage, knowing they will lose a lot of time in the time-trial. But one of the final names here is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney, He was 3rd on this stage last year and he will hope he can do something similar this year.

There is a whole glut of great time-trialists here, but we will focus on just a few. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney again has to take center stage here as the top favourite. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Würtz is his big rival lately, but given the length of the TT it might be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Vlatos who provides the sternest challenge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Paillot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Sütterlin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich are all evenly matched. It's unlikely they will fight for the stage win, but a podium could be possible.

Except for Koretzky (whom I though might interfere with Lecuisinier) we bring everything we got to hope for a good start. Had this race been in the middle of the season I don’t think we would have made this strong a lineup, but it’s always Nice to have a good get-go.

Hopefully Lecuisinier Can stay with the better puncheurs and then have a good day in the TT saddle to fight for a top 5. Might be a bit bold sending him here, but with some luck it could give a good outing for little RD’s spent.

All my timetrialists closely missing out on the favourite list I guess. Hope one can have a good daily form and surprise a bit.
Other than that basically Groenewegen to show himself in the sprint. No real GC ambition.

The beginning of our PT adventure. Let's hope we get sighted Pfft

That sounded really negative, I can't wait for this Grin Just not getting my hopes up for this particular one but will enjoy just seeing MG back! Thanks red for the preview

15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

This is a welcome change for Evonik. In basically every PT season, Tasmania was the late season race where we didn't have too high expectations but ended up being even worse than that and/or burying the ambitions to finish higher in the final ranking.

For the first time ever, we have a legit contender with Taaramae. Phinney has to be the big favourite but a podium finish could be a realistic target. With Lecuisinier and Ganna also here, this could be a first small pointer towards the title/podium fight.

Eislers is my man for the first stage. A very messy sprint could be possible since both top sprinters dont seem to have a particularly good leadout train here so we could see my Stoltz - Becis - Chavanne train in action i guess? At least ISA and me have a good group of rouleurs so hopefully we can avoid a break victory on the first stage like last year...

Can't wait for the season to kick off!

Great to see the start of the racing season is just around the corner!

Too bad it's with a race where we have no expectations. Breakaways, here we come! I mean, it did work last year Grin

Woo! Let's get this season going! Can't wait to see the new and improved Simon Yates in action, plus Cattaneo up against some of the heavy hitters in the Pro Tour.

Excited for the start of the season. The Tour of Tasmania organisers must be delighted with the response to the calendar shift after attracting 3 of the top 4 from the PT individual rankings of last season.

ISA - Hexacta have our team leader John Degenkolb here to open his season. John indicated to team management that he wanted to get some racing in his legs before the critical sprinter rendevous in Qatar later this month. Last season he had some spare RD's to use where he checked out some cobbled races, but that experiment did not work out too well, so Tasmania seemed an interesting alternative. This is the only outing of the year where he does not have a full lead-out entourage, so a relatively low key start to the season without too much pressure is envisaged.

From a GC perspective, we go with a two-pronged approach of Sepulveda and Vakoc. Both finished in the mid-20's on GC last year, and hope for better this time around. First priority for the team is to avoid last years scenario where the BotD proved victorious on stage 1, denying the sprinters, and also holding enough of an advantage for some of the break to have a GC impact. A similarly decisive stage 2 as last year is definitely what we are hoping for to put the pure TT riders in difficulty - it was a good day for Vakoc in 2020, but this time around Eduardo needs to be more attentive. If stage 2 proves decisive, there is potential that both riders can grab a top 20 GC result if they then back up in the TT. If stage 2 is a damp squib though, this might prove wasted race days for Vakoc in particular, and a poor ppRD return all-round for team management.

However the race is run, is hard to see past defending race and PT title winners Phinney and Isostar for the win!

Feels weird not to be reporting the race, the only race I reported for all my three seasons. But as secondary home race (even though I'm sad Launceston got cut as arrival city) it was a no-brainer to go for a wildcard here if we had the cash.

Debut for Hagen who won the race under my guidance in 2018, but that was PCM 15, and the game has moved on since then. I expect maybe more from Uran from a GC perspective, though he is no match to Phinney and Taaramae (ironically the other two riders who I reported to the victory :lolSmile.

Anyway, just glad to see racing get back underway. Good luck to all!

Great to see Gidich so far up the favorite's list. For sure I expected a stronger puncheur field at this race. Bring it on!!

Excited to get things going. Hopefully Würtz can do a good TT and a decent GC. Plenty of debutants on our team, so hoping they can get a good start.

Phinney to win it!

Here we go again! Grin Don't expect anything from this race: my fingers are crossed that Prado can somehow survive the hilly stage without any major time loss, with Bertilsson maybe having a small chance for a decent result in sprint stage. Anything better than almost nothing would be a decent surprise for me.

Thanks for the preview, redordead!

Such drunk judges... Feel like I and the minions were robbed here. Wink

Anyway, 2nd is a lot more than expected seeing such awful train... Hopefully never again see a leadout Barbin/De Kleijn again, later even after working early on already.

Holding the lead despite 1km sprint under the flame Rouge is big. Was expecting to drop far more.

And the end then... Obviously SotD had more money to offer for the officials. Congrats on that win.

Now let's see if my time trialists are able to hold on on the hill stages somehow for a decent GC.

SotD
Ehm, I guess things went as they should. Can’t really appreciate these many points though when it was obvious that Coquard didn’t win.

I hope this was a one-off so we don’t get these kind of results all the time. I won’t remember seeing it before although there was a photofinish in one of the Continental Championships (I think) where the win was also given to the sprinter I would have Said finished 2nd. That one was very close though. This one seemed very weird, as you can’t even argue that the in game Line was placed different to the visable one.

Eventhough I can’t celebrate the win, I was happy to see that the leadout worked despite Lecuisinier taking part. I think Kortsidakis and Karatzios should be able to do similar when Lecuisinier or Koretzky isn’t there. When they are I guess they Can lend Coquard a hand for a Stage or two.

I hope Lecuisinier won’t be helping Coquard tomorrow though!

Wtf?!?
I mean, we've had stages where the "official" finish line just was elsewhere than the "painted" one, but here Coquard never ever was ahead... Annoying to see such BS already in the first PT stage of the year.
On the other hand, I love to see that trains actually *can* work even in PCM20, gives me something to build my hopes upon Pfft

Congrats SotD, seems like you held enough money back after transfers Pfft

Well, that's something new ... Easy stage for us, hopefully we're ready to go tomorrow.
