Philadelphia International Championship
Welcome to the 11th edition of the Philadelphia International Championship. Running since 2010 it has a rich history with some big name winners. Last year's winner is present in Roger Kluge and that tells us that late attacks can definitely work in this race. The sprinter teams will have to be careful. It's a fairly long race at nearly 195 km and there are plenty of bumps throughout that could mix up the sprint trains or provide a launchpad for late attacks.
With that said let's look at some of the other favourites:
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Reinhardt | 71 | 67 | 73 | 66 | 79 | 84 |
Reinhardt has been in a league of his own this season as far as CT sprinters and he will want to prove that in this C2HC classic. The German has pace to burn and isn't too shabby on the hills.
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Coutinho | 72 | 65 | 75 | 74 | 79 | 80 | Wippert | 70 | 67 | 75 | 70 | 78 | 82 | Kragh Andersen | 77 | 64 | 70 | 74 | 81 | 77 |
Coutinho has been a consistent rider and brings his solid all round skills to the race. We also know he is usually well supported by his team, sometimes too well. Wippert won a difficult sprint classic in Frankfurt and he has the acceleration to score another top result. Kragh Andersen has the weakness of a poor acceleration which has plagued him this year, but perhaps his big engine can help him here.
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Carsi | 70 | 55 | 66 | 69 | 80 | 82 | Lobato del Valle | 72 | 67 | 73 | 72 | 77 | 80 | Krieger | 71 | 62 | 71 | 74 | 79 | 79 | Sbaragli | 76 | 66 | 76 | 70 | 77 | 78 | Pelucchi | 74 | 68 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 77 | Bennett | 71 | 64 | 74 | 68 | 79 | 79 | Keough | 73 | 62 | 67 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Salleh | 70 | 59 | 73 | 65 | 80 | 80 | Habtom | 75 | 61 | 75 | 75 | 77 | 78 | Te Brake | 75 | 64 | 74 | 72 | 79 | 76 | Redecker | 73 | 72 | 74 | 67 | 77 | 78 | Ranneries | 70 | 56 | 68 | 65 | 78 | 82 | Lavoine | 73 | 60 | 71 | 64 | 80 | 78 | Boev | 72 | 65 | 74 | 67 | 78 | 78 |
We have a long list of sprinters in Tier III. Carsi has top speed and acceleration, but might not be able to handle the undulating terrain. Lobato del Valle on other hand is much better there and has already shown this year that he can pull off a surprising result. Krieger is still searching for his 1st win this year. Sbaragli might have a race chance here to ride for himself.
Pelucchi has had some great results in stage races recently, can he do it also in one day race? Bennett on the other hand is not having a great season so far, can he turn it around here? This race is not tailormade for Keough, but the American should be motivated on home soil. Salleh is in a similar boat to Carsi, in what shape will he reach the finish?
Habtom and Redecker both get their chance with no Selig here. Te Brake hasn't been great for Gjensidige so far, but perhaps a difficult race will suit him. Ranneries is another sprinter allergic to hills so this might not be his race. Lavoine has been hit and miss this year, what will it be this time? And finally draft pick Boev has been doing an excellent job for Philips, can he show his value again?
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Katrasnik | 81 | 63 | 72 | 76 | 63 | 72 | Meyer | 74 | 79 | 74 | 71 | 72 | 77 | Kuznetsov | 76 | 70 | 75 | 73 | 72 | 75 | Ignatiev | 76 | 71 | 75 | 68 | 68 | 76 | Frankovic | 74 | 71 | 71 | 78 | 74 | 76 | Oss | 76 | 72 | 73 | 72 | 72 | 71 | Ratto | 79 | 60 | 74 | 66 | 75 | 73 | Dakteris | 75 | 64 | 74 | 70 | 77 | 77 | Paprstka | 75 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 70 | 72 | Van Lerberghe | 74 | 66 | 75 | 74 | 75 | 73 | Maes | 78 | 65 | 76 | 71 | 60 | 64 |
Katrasnik is the premium rouleur in CT and has already won a flat classic. The same with Meyer who is an excellent puncheur that will try to use tough terrain to his advantage. Kuznetsov is another rider we have seen attacking late in these types of races. Same can be said of his compatriot Ignatiev. Frankovic also has a solid engine on him if he goes long. Oss gives Strava another attacking option.

Go Pelucchi! Really sad I can't do this race anymore, we had some good results here in the past.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Goal race for us given its geography but agree with the assessment that it isn't suited to Keough. Would love to see Frankovic with a late attack but doubt it will happen.
Good luck to all.

Between this and Tour of America Bennett can turn things turn around. To be fair he'll have no support here really. Would be happy with a top 10

No Los Pollos rider in the preview is hard, but understandable. I hope they prove you wrong

Would be nice if Redecker and/or Habtom can do something here, but considering how their season has gone so far, I don't expect much. But it's always good to go into a race with no expectations, you can only be positively surprised

If Ranneries magically keep up with the peloton until the flame rouge, he would be unable to sprint
Guess we need to hope for a breakaway here. |

Why do they make classics for sprinters?

Come on Boev, do your stuff I guess this race could suit someone like Paprstka or Van Lerberghe as well. We're probably more likely looking at a Top 10 result to eb realistic.
Thanks for the preview red

Well, not much to expect for us here. A breakaway would be nice and if Haddi could get a top 15 that would be above par for us. Hard to look past Reinhardt for the win though

Of course, we're hoping that Reinhardt will finally get an actual chance in a C2(HC) classic, as most of them were spoiled by attackers so far. Sometimes even by our own Rouleur, Mundle, who could have been mentioned in that list as well. Let's see if we finally get a true sprinter classic - they've unfortunately become rare this year...

We got a sprint and maybe, for once, AKA's allround abilities paid off. Keough seems to have lost interest in sprinting of late, either not sprinting or starting so far back that 11th is a good outcome. Which is a pity since this was a top 10 goal. But he wasn't the only one taking a nap today.
Hopefully the sprint gods turn in our favor soon.
Congrats to Bbl.

Oh well, flat one day races definitely aren't our friends this year. Absolute crap performance. Guess the team actually rode for Mundle, so Reinhardt was completely off position and didn't get a train. I know a rider who won't ride in flat classics alongside a sprinter next year...
Congrats bbl, finally AKA gets what he should have gotten way more often! And thanks for the report, red. Obviously didn't enjoy the finale at all, but at least we have a deserving winner.

No Kump no party in this race. I have a soft spot for this race since reporting & targeting it myself, But despite the awesome coverage it didn't feel like a typical Philly International this year with the flat sprinters successful. Great to see both Kragh's on a roll lately though, and especially happy for bbl for the win and Tinxia for another podium place.

No no no. That can't be. Funny prank. I'll just keep refreshing until the results change to show AKA finishing 23rd, as he's supposed to. Is the finishing picture actually from a second peloton?
Every so often you just get lucky. It has to happen at some point with how random things are in these sprints. You hope it happens at the right time and often enough. Well, it hasn't been often enough this year, but it's something. It's life. At least for today, Asbjorn Kragh Andersen was the best sprinter on the road. It feels good. Admittedly after such a sour season, I'm not as thrilled as I'd like to be even at such a great win. I want to post bananas and caps and exclamation points, but it doesn't quite feel right to do so given the context.
I definitely didn't expect it. I liked that he was attentive all day and made every split, but I was hesitant to think anything of it because it easily could have been because he was acting as a rouleur. Then he started to sag a bit in the final and I figured it would be another 8th-12th type of day. Then when he launched on the right and hit the front with so much speed, I figured he would crack and fall off again. But thankfully, he was just able to hold it and nobody had the power to come around. It was a truly impressive sprint, no question.
I like to think that maybe on a hard day like today, his flat and resistance finally kicked in and put him a cut above the rest - but I do think it's more likely that he just got some luck in the wheel of sprint fortune for once. I'm definitely glad the season had a big enough sample size for it to happen though!
I do have to say, AKA winning a flat classic right after his brother does the exact same thing in PT is quite poetic. Maybe there's something to that.
Thanks for a great report redordead, and thanks for the congrats everyone!

Kragh power today! Congrats on the win, bbl I'm guessing Asbjørn got some motivation from Søren today It was a very tight sprint, so good job by AKA to hold off the rest today.

Guillén, you absolute legend! Great positioning by the Costa Rican and a great sprint, only being beaten by one man. Was not his favourite terrain, but must have had a great day to still have that much in his tank, which I'll gladly take of course. Quispe was also present and followed the right attack near the end, perfectly playing our cards how I would have told them to if they could hear me. Nice to see stagiaire Camargo doing decent with a 29th place as well, even though it doesn't deliver any points.
Thanks for the great report, and congratulations to worthy winner bbl!
