Malopolski Wyscig
Welcome to Krakow for the Paris-Roubaix of Poland. A 242 km cobbled race with no less than 18 local laps on the parcours of 13.4 km, including a cobbled sector of 2.3 and one of 0.5 km. It’s a long race, perfect for cobblers who are strong on the flat and have a big engine, like Baugnies. Oh, what’s that? Did his manager totally oversee this race and forget to come here? Well, that’s a bummer. It’s only the third edition of the Malopolski Wyscig, and if one is thing is certain, it is the fact that there will be a new rider on the winner’s list. Former winners Bewley and Stallaert are too important nowadays to come to an C1 race, but that won’t form a problem for the neutral spectator as the starting list still looks very promising! Talking about that, let’s have a look at the favourites for the race!
| FLAT | HILL | STA | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Summerhill | 78 | 73 | 76 | 72 | 83 | 70 | 73 | Altur | 75 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 72 | 68 | Trentin | 74 | 74 | 76 | 71 | 81 | 75 | 76 | Vanspeybrouck | 75 | 70 | 77 | 70 | 81 | 66 | 68 | Zepuntke | 72 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 81 | 72 | 65 | Vanmarcke | 76 | 66 | 77 | 72 | 80 | 70 | 72 | Daniel | 73 | 69 | 76 | 76 | 80 | 76 | 72 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 80 | 72 | 71 | Bakari | 57 | 53 | 56 | 53 | 80 | 59 | 57 | Machado | 69 | 63 | 72 | 67 | 79 | 62 | 61 | Ferreira | 73 | 68 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 69 | Nolf | 73 | 65 | 76 | 71 | 79 | 62 | 70 | Bush | 74 | 63 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 71 | 73 | Taubel | 73 | 65 | 69 | 73 | 78 | 61 | 64 | Breen | 77 | 70 | 72 | 72 | 78 | 73 | 72 | Van Avermaet | 74 | 72 | 72 | 69 | 78 | 74 | 72 | Van Keirsbulck | 72 | 71 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 70 | 68 | Van Lerberghe | 74 | 66 | 75 | 74 | 77 | 75 | 73 | Debesay | 75 | 74 | 75 | 79 | 77 | 69 | 78 | Thomas | 73 | 58 | 72 | 67 | 77 | 72 | 75 | Maes | 78 | 65 | 76 | 71 | 77 | 60 | 64 | Bolivar | 73 | 66 | 74 | 70 | 77 | 64 | 69 | Chatarunga | 72 | 67 | 79 | 72 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Eeckhout | 72 | 61 | 71 | 71 | 77 | 64 | 57 | Schreurs | 72 | 67 | 75 | 75 | 77 | 72 | 71 | Owen | 73 | 69 | 73 | 71 | 77 | 64 | 71 | Insausti | 70 | 64 | 76 | 73 | 77 | 57 | 66 | Kulppi | 73 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 77 | 65 | 70 |
It’s not a big secret who the absolute favourite will be tomorrow. Summerhill has simply dominated the cobbles this season, and will try to continue doing so. Once again he brought some strong domestiques in the name of Vanspeybrouck, Machado and Eeckhout. Andorra Cycling Project will be one of the teams working hard to reel the breakaway back in, or will they play it differently and send someone in the break themselves?
Altur is the second-best cobbler on the list of favourites, but hasn’t been able to convince his manager too much this year. He’s one of the guys Podium Ambition is counting on to stay in the PCT, so another low top-10 finish would be far from ideal. Lucky for him, the past results don’t matter at the start tomorrow. Another strong rival for the American favourite should be Trentin. The talian from Mapei is an excellent cobbler and one of the fastest – if not the fastest – of the cobblers at the finish line. He has beaten Summerhill already this season, so why not again? Zepuntke should be as strong on the cobbles as the aforementioned riders. Nevertheless, his lack of abilities on the flat compared to the other top favourites could hurt him on this 242 km course. On the other hand, the length of the parcours is ideal for his exceptional survival skills, only beaten by one man on that terrain.
That man being Vanbilsen. The Belgian rider from Lierse SK – Pizza Ullo PCTeam is extremely hard to tire. Combine that with some very strong cobble and flat skills, and you might have a cocktail for success. Vanmarcke and Daniel have a similar skill-set on the cobbles, but, even though they are both very well-rounded riders as well, don’t seem to be as strong as Vanbilsen. Bakari won’t do anything, sure, but it feels wrong not mentioning him.
Then a lot of similar riders will be battling for the other top-10 positions, or maybe a top-5 on a very good day. Ferreira and Nolf, who is the first CT rider on the list, seem to have the upper hand on the other looking at their cobble experience and abilities. Nevertheless, Bush and Breen have already gotten some nice results in HC races this year as well, and will be looking to continue their streak of positive performances. Debesay also stands out as a very well-rounded rider, as we see different other CT teams bringing their leader to C1 in the hope of scoring some valuable points: Taubel, Van Avermaet, Van Lerberghe, Maes and Thomas.
Nevertheless, there is always the possibility of the race not being as hard as we all expect it to be. Therefore, different riders who aren’t in the list of favourites, might also have a decent chance of finishing high if it comes to a reduced sprint.
| FLAT | HILL | STA | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Saber | 75 | 68 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 81 | 79 | Van Asbroeck | 75 | 71 | 75 | 72 | 74 | 80 | 78 | Havik | 73 | 64 | 74 | 68 | 76 | 79 | 76 | Sanikwathi | 72 | 66 | 70 | 67 | 72 | 78 | 78 | Naesen | 75 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 77 | 76 | Edmondson | 73 | 64 | 72 | 71 | 74 | 77 | 75 | Sbaragli | 76 | 66 | 76 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 78 | Dakteris | 75 | 64 | 74 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 77 | Planckaert | 73 | 65 | 71 | 72 | 71 | 77 | 77 |
Amongst the fast men, Saber, Havik and Naesen should be the strongest on the cobbles, with the former being the best sprinter and the latter being the strongest all-rounder who has already won several races this year. Van Asbroeck and Sbaragli might not be as skilled on the secteurs pavés, but their physical abilities might make up for that.
The only thing left for me today is to share the startlist with you, the only thing left for the riders is to win Malopolski Wyscig!

Bring back the WC version of this route for Debesay's sake

Though I'd really like to win a classic this year, the chances of beating Summerhill are slim.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hoping Breen can have a positive performance again. He started the season very well with some superb results, but lately his results have been average at best. The length of the race doesn't really play to his strengths, but hopefully he can be in the mix either way.

At this point in the season Altur isn't fighting for results, he's fighting for his future in the team! Long overdue time for him to prove he is the better long term bet vs training Wolverine.
Equally Wolverine does have to prove this too.
Basically i kind of no longer care about the overall race, i'm just here to see which rider actually wants to be on my team next season

We only had one good C1 result so far this season in a cobbled race and that was from Schoonbroodt at the Viana do Castelo. Naesen has yet to prove himself against top competition and I doubt he'll do much better here, but considering how he's performing one tier below, everything here is a bonus. I'd expect him to be behind a split with ~40kms to go and finish around 50th
Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the report!

Looks like a slightly easier startlist than most of the season, so hopefully Vanmarcke can look like the last two seasons and get a good result instead of the shitty results of this season

Since Geraint Thomas is not what we hope I don't have any expectations for this race and hard 0 points for my team.

Hoping that the team continues the good month on the cobbles but to be realistic a Top 15 is what we're after from this race. We've been getting good depth points as well, so hoping that can continue.
Thanks for the preview Nemolito

Stop giving me crucial punctures
Another very strong Vanbilsen performance, even beating Summerhill, but in the end Altur was stronger. I guess TMM deserved a win at some point, but I doubt Vanbilsen will get a better chance this year. Thanks for the great report, but again, stop giving me punctures!

Best cobble result of the season!
Not saying much given it's only 21st place But I loved that we finally got a man up the road. Great ride by Groselj
Congrats TMM, the survival push in on!
Very fun report , thanks Nemo

Or do that 90kms from the finish and then puncture, that works But kudos to Okbamariam im 25th place who gives us exactly one more point than expected! He's on a good run.
Congrats to TMM! And thanks for the report!

I do like Zepuntke's performance here, thanks for the report Nemolito! Beating Summerhill is already a great result, and a podium finish is thoroughly deserved. The two riders in front of him deserved it, congrats TMM!
The support is a bit weak looking at the results but they probably had to work to get Zepuntke back and chase so I'll let them off.

Altur beginning his road to redemption, Wolverine in 20th making his claim. Maybe, just maybe, there is some fight left in this team for the PCT!
C'mon Ewan, pay attention and step it up now.
