Race Profile

A successful breakaway on the final stage granted an unexpected victory to Vegard Stake Laengen in last year's edition of this race. The year before it was Ponzi winning in what was the first time this race was held as a three stage event. It was held as a classic from the years 2009 to 2017, with the race not featuring on the calendar in 2012. The race, both as a classic and as a stage race has favoured the punchers, notwithstanding the breakaway victory last time out.

No former winner is on the startlist so it gives an opportunity to someone new to win the race. Incidentally, no rider has won this race more than once, which means we are assured to have an eleventh different winner.

The course features three stages with the first being a short uphill Time Trial where riders will a combination of climbing and time-trialling abilities to emerge victorious. This is followed by two hilly stages where the pure punchers are expected to shine. Stage 2 is relatively mild with moderate difficulties in the final third and a very short uphill finish. Stage 3 much harder, with roads going up and down all through, and the stage finishing atop a nasty looking hill with steep gradients in the final kilometers. It looks to be an exciting event lined up for us!

While not the absolute strongest puncher in the field, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez's overall climbing abilities should help him immensely on stages 1 and 3, which puts him on top of the favourites list for this race. His puncher skills aren't too shabby either and he has already shown his capability to win hilly races this season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge comes into this race in excellent form, which must be a breath of fresh air for his manager, after a torrid 2019. He will be looking to build on the same and go one step better than where the favourites' list puts him. he is much better against the clock than top favourite Lopez, but his climbing skills on harder ascents is what rates him slightly lower.

Similar to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre will be looking to utilize the first stage to put himself into a good position and then remain competitive for the rest of the race. His puncher skills are a shade lower than his rivals, but he can tackle the harder climbs quite well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko are almost identical when it comes to abilities required for this race. Both riders are expected to lose time in the opening stage but will hope to make it up with impactful riding in the other stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich will look to use their overall climbing prowess to impress in this race, and should be Top 5 contenders. Beltran is a much better puncher than other two, but his time-trialling skills leave something to be desired.

The next strong puncher on the list is an aging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants, who won't be fare to well on Stage 1. He however can make an impact in the other two stages, and will probably need to do so, to be able to live up his billing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi is unique in this list as he's the only 'pure' climber to feature. He has decent puncher and time-trial skills, which combined with his primary abilities should allow him to challenge for a Top 10 finish in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Chaves is another rider with strong overall climbing skills, but is weaker against the clock than needed to supplement it. He too will be aiming to get into the Top 10 of this race, more through consistency than by explosiveness.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert combines solid puncher and time-trial capability with better than average climbing to be one of the dark horses for a high finish in this race. His best chance of a high finish is probably to have a non-selective race, where the stages 2 and 3 do not produce much gaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell hasn't had the best season so far, so this race is an excellent opportunity for him to turn it around. He is a strong enough puncher to do well in the second and third stage but he needs to limit his time loss on the first stage to remain competitive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin78747675777070

The outsiders' list sees an interesting list of leaders, co-leaders and domestiques. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf are most interesting as they'll probably the designated leaders for their respective teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Gerts are strong secondary leaders and could turn this race into a fruitful one for their teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Generali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle feature twice more each with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Oliviera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Brown, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Konrad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin, respectively. With some form and a bit of luck, any of these riders could make a dash for a Top 10 placing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Nepomnyachsniy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png De Plus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Meurisse are the other names on this and are the designated leaders for their respective teams. Incidentally, all three have been in decent form this season, and are well capable of pulling off a surprising high finish here.

Stage 1 Favourites - Prologue
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre748177
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle767179

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Rosskopf737577
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar757575

Stage 1 will need both climbing and time-trial skills of the riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre has a great combination of the same, which puts him top favourite to wear the leader's jersey at the end of this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, with completely different skillsets other than puncher capabilities, aren't too far behind and are expected to challenge the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brandle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Oliveira on the other hand will be hoping to use this stage as a launchpad for a high finish.

Actually all other riders mentioned in the list are quite similar to the above mentioned duo, and will depend quite a bit on a good Prologue to keep themselves in GC contention later in the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi, as mentioned before, is a differnt kind of exception, with his strong climbing skills, perhaps hoping for the race to become too difficult for the punchers on the final stage.

Sagan, Lutsenko and Bobridge are the best punchers in the race, and will look to make use of the final tow stages in their quest for the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Lopez are not far, and especially the former should be quite comfortable irrespective of how difficult or tepid, the race turns out to be.

The likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Borges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Betancourt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Wayetens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar will need to make major gains on the hills if they are to overcome the deficit they are likely to face after the Prologue.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Paulinho are the other strong punchers in the race, and their strengths and weaknesses have already been elaborated earlier.

**There were requests to put the in-game startlist in previews going ahead. I had already played this race before the request was made and did not get time to go back and take the screenshot again.
Come on, Bobridge! Ignore the mountain stat!

(Don't know anything about the possible influence of MO here.)

Thanks for the detailed preview Wink
Come on, Beltran! Use the mountain stat! Pfft

In all seriousness I would love to see Beltran finally have a good race. I very much doubt we could save our season here, but I just want a good performance because it's a goal race for us. On the other hand given the season Beltran is having, I won't be at all surprised if he's bad again and finishes outside the top 20 even.

Thanks for the preview Abhi, it should be an exciting race Smile

Interesting startlist. Normally I would point towards Bobridge here, but I guess the MO have a decent say reading the preview...

Evonik could be in for another massive pointscore here, and while I can't see how we should beat them in the long run, I will be rooting for them to do so Smile

50 points would be great. Probably unreasonable.

I hope you are right. Grin

This is another race where i have huge expectations. Imo this is close to the perfect route for Lopez. Lots of puncheurs have worse PRL skills than Lopez while basically everyone has worse MO that might be the most important stat for the prologue.

I really like Lopez' support for this race too. Chiarello was mentioned as an outsider in the preview for being basically a top 5 (climber / ) stage racer here while i have a very strong combination of powerful rouleurs that can climb a bit which might be ideal for the first 2/3 of stage 2 (Naud, Dzamastagic, Riesebeek) and climber/puncheur hybrids that might be needed for the rest of the race (Marzuki, Sakalou, Blums, Chiarello). In therory, that should basically guarantee that we wont have a repeat of last years race where a stage 3 break won the GC.

Very excited for this one Grin

De Plus is the weakest of our leaders on paper, and with the PT here as well any points would be great.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
We are technically in this race. If all our riders bother to turn up for sign-on on day 1 it'll beat my expectations Pfft
Let's see what Eddie can do against PT competition, but S3 looks too hilly for him to be able to hold on to a great GC result. U25 jersey might be a decent goal

Got a really deep team for this one so I'm hoping everyone has a decent race. With more than one potential leader however, I'm mostly just afraid the AI will screw us like it successfully has done throughout the season Pfft

Yates would have won this race last season if I'd actually had any domestiques capable of chasing the break on the final stage, so here's hoping for a similar performance. But saying that the profiles have been adjusted to favour the pure puncheurs more (as with seemingly every race...) so chances are he'll find it harder going.

You didn't bring Rohan Dennis? Shock

That news makes Brändle one of the top favorites for the opening stage. Also I have brought all firepower I can lead by Lutsenko and Gidich for the hills. I hope having too many options won't anger the PCM AI here, as this should be a good race for my team.
Thanks for the great preview Abhishek!
Well, that was not the start I was hoping for. I fear it's the MO guys taking over in this race - no desaster result for Bobridge, but Gunman with a shockingly low finish. Maybe Roe has a backup plan, if Bobridge fails Grin
Beltran managed to limit his losses somewhat so that's okay I guess. I don't know why Nepomnyachsniy is only 10th given some of the riders ahead of him, but again not that important really.

Great start by Izagirre, congrats Beagle Smile

Lopez didnt seem to have a good day but nothing lost yet. Chiarello with a good ride!

Fantastic result for Dunbar! At one point i thought he would pull up the upset, but 4th is still a very good result. Let's see if he can avoid losing time in the following stages and secure another high GC result. Also, Herrada and Benito with great performances! Could give us some valuable depth points
Manager of [MG] Repsol - Netflix

Third is okay from Brändle but on a good day he probably would've beaten the two riders in front of him. Gidich unfortunately with a rather weak result, while Lutsenko did okay. Fung had an extremely good day!

Congrats Polar!
Curious how selective the hilly stages will be.
Huge deficit already, which kind of makes me not want to continue in this race. Still a nice pair of stages left to deal with.

Izagirre with a very nice win after a couple of mishaps earlier in the season. Would be a deserving final winner. Congrats beagle!
